“Marter & Yony”
is a Minimal DUB Production unit from Brooklyn New York.
Marter aka Masateru Yamauchi on Bass&Keys (Jazzy Sport, Japan) and Yony aka Yoshio ‘Tony’ Kabayashi on Drums&Percussion (Aokoya Afrobeat, Underground System, New York) formed duo in early 2011.
While sticking to the concept of minimal dub, their work sticks to the method of recording live performance of bass and drums directly record on analog tapes without using loops or sequences at all to retain a unique, raw yet warm analog sound.
Since their main project was the creation of recorded works, they didn’t perform often, but in the summer of 2019, they got opportunity to have live performance with channel-U aka Yuske Yamamoto, who’s vibraphonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and he performed Marter&Yony’s works as well.
Performing with channel-U gave them opportunity to explore new live performance possibilities.
Since then, they welcomed Daisuke Hayashi of Hayashi sound as a dub engineer, and have been developing to further explore the live dub concept as Marter&Yony + channel-U and their live dub performances have been well received.
The cosmic sound approach of channel-U’s synthesizer and Marter&Yony’s minimal beats and grooves create a unique worldview, and Daisuke’s dub sound processing gives it overwhelming breadth and depth..
Their minimal but always experimental sound is not bound by a single genre, and they travel freely from deep house to techno, afrobat to reggae through dub filters and embark on a grand journey with the audience.
Marter&Yony released 1st 7” vinyl in 2011, and 1st 12”EP “Spy EP” in 2012 from Brooklyn based Concent Productions.
1st full album “Rhythm Matter” digitally released from Bill Laswell’s M.O.D. Technologies in 2014, and in 2018, 12” analog version “Rhythm Matter LP” containing 8 tracks extracted from digital album released from unique Brooklyn’s label Personal affair.
