The rock stacking at the start of the episode is like a memorial. There's a story about Scottish Highlanders who went into battle and the night before the battle, all the soldiers stacked piles of rocks similar to what Joel did. After the battle, those that returned, knocked over their stacks but the stacks that didn't get knocked over ended up serving as memorials for the friends lost during the battle.

I mean, I'm sure in this circumstance that was what that is about, but cairns are used to mark trails and are built by any human being randomly near rocks. Just like otters juggle rocks for no reason, people also stack rocks for no reason. The beauty of this ambiguity in the show is that it allows us to explore our own feelings rather than dictate or reference history; That is where I disagree.

Just some info ... FEDRA actually also exist in real life in the USA as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), so if something like this were to happen, then FEMA would take over the entire country and declared martial law.

I'm sure the Naughty Dog guy said, in an interview. The episode was almost two hours long, but they were made to cut it down. If that's the case, I want it all.

The fungus most likely can grab nutrients from the surroundings while being dormant to keep the host body alive, and also feeding on the body itself.

First let me say... Great reaction!
As for how long the infected live without food, the cordyceps feeds on the human host but it also keeps it alive and nurishes it to keep it alive as long as the body is not killed. If the body is killed the cordyceps just ingests whats left like the one Tess first found in that underground passage in episode 1.
Small side note: I think Ellie needed to dehumanize by cutting the forehead of that infected in the basement so she was able to put it out of it's misery. She wants to have the ability to not feel bad doing it or killing all the infected when it becomes necessary.

Jake-we are all concerned, we've been talking amongst ourselves. we are worried about well-how underdeveloped your sense of humor is-i mean, Jake-this joke "schlong on schlong time"? really Jake? Jake-this might work on the playground, for maybe up to a 5th grader, ok even maybe a few low end/low performing 7th graders, but Jake-you are an adult, right? you can drive a car. you can buy a beer. you registered to vote. you registered for the army. these are signs that you have reached a certain age in life. one sees you driving a car, we assume you are an adult. but then-we see this "joke" you've written-and we really worry. we like to think you are above the 5th grade level of humor and communication. But-? I mean, see it from our point of view, here. we didn't ask you to come up with a joke. you volunteered this on your own. so? once again, Jake. we are worried.
