      I am just learning about this series today for the first time. Thank you for the great introduction. I was wondering about your thoughts on the black and white hardcover books. You cannot really find them at the price you mentioned in your other video any longer, $30. Have you heard anything about them reprinting and would you expect them to print a black and white version of all the versions eventually? I appreciate any insight you are able to offer.

      @@roproart6529I am so thrilled to hear this. And thank you for the kind words.
      Re: the black and white editions, unfortunately, I don't think there will be a reprint, at least in the limited numbered HCs (the limited edition stops making sense then) but I do hope they can attempt it again in paperback.
      I don't think black and white sells as well. Which makes it an author passion project that is not that common to see...

    A lovely series from a fellow Michigan resident...I do hope he puts out more issues soon, but I also understand he's had a number of personal issues that have prevented him from writing as much new material as he'd like.

      I didn't know about his personal life at all until very recently. I can't imagine such art is quick to create in any circumstances, but the fact that he is the writer artist, letterer and colorist also make a diifference I'm sure.

    This was a fantastic overview; thank you for the video!
    I've only recently stumbled into Mouse Guard from the tabletop roleplaying scene and picked up Black Axe at my local library (with the intent of going chronologically) and the county only had 3 books total. I thought that was it, just three. I've just finished Black Axe and I have never been so happy to be wrong in my life. I am dying to get my hands on the rest of the publications and this video helped me get a feel for what's out there in this surprisingly large universe of the Mouse Territories.

    I loved the series but I actually do think I like the art in the beginning slightly more than the more recent issues. He has incorporated more digital effects recently and I like the earlier issues that are seem more hand drawn with less manipulation. Just a personal preference. The newer issues are still awesome of course.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, i am probably not savvy enough to be able to tell the digital stuff perhaps? I do think that given how much of an 'auteur comic' Mouse Guard is and how much he personally does, that I'd understand the use the more complex the work gets. I wouldn't mind if he worked with a colorist/painter though.

    • @essaywhu
      @essaywhu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ftloc the colors are fine. I just see a lot of fancy effects that I am less into. Like on the first page of Owlhen with the light coming through the window. It just really calls attention to itself and I feel like he didn’t have the same set of tools earlier in the series. It’s nothing major, just little things like that. I just like comics that feel more homemade I guess.
      It’s funny because someone like Tom Scioli draws completely on a tablet now but his art seems more homemade because it’s less perfect I guess.

      @@essaywhu i completely see what you mean. I've never enjoyed photorealistic art for similar reasons - i like thinking of things as drawn. Computers make things a bit muddy i guess, but i definitely will keep an eye out for the kind of things you mention!

      @@ftloc Ware is just so ridiculously talented. It’s so crazy looking at his graphic novels and comparing the styles between them and his sketchbooks or his monograph. His sketchbooks show how wide his actual range really is and then add in all his models and contraptions with moving parts or weird printing techniques. Then add in design work for books of comic strips like Krazy Kat and Gasoline Alley, and a book of architecture photography, and mural work, movie posters and magazines about old-timey music. He’s a real renaissance man. I honestly can’t think of another comic book artist that has such a diverse repertoire, and a lot of his sketches don’t even use in his style that he shows in his graphic novels. And the amount of work that he has produced is staggering. I look at it and can’t figure out how he finds the time to produce so much and take on so many projects in addition to keeping these impeccable sketchbooks. Does he ever sleep? I sometimes think about what a third sketchbook volume from him would look like and I almost feel ill because I know it will just be insane.

    How would you rank the anthropomorphic mouse comics? Maus, Mouse Guard, Mice Templar, Mickey, Scurry, Squarriors, etc?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh, a subset of the 'Best Anthropomorphic' list I have been mulling for so long! I'd need to read more specifically mouse comics (I have a few in prose for sure) but one thing I would definitely NOT have on the list is Maus.
      That is a story about humans, of course represented as mice, but not the same thing as an anthropomorphic animal.
      In other words, I'd say that is an 'animalized human' and not a 'humanized animal' story.

      @ftloc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drderrickchua No, I'd say there's always human concerns in anthropomorophic fiction, the idea of that is to attribute human qualities and behaviour to non human creatures.
      Over there you would either have a human world (Peanuts,) or a an animal world (Uncle Scrooge) or a mix.
      Maus is an autobiography and biography and history using a literary tool so they're not nice being given human qualities, they're humans being depicted as mice, pigs, dogs etc. The image may be similar, but the device is very different. At least that's the way I look at it.
