Rocco you're a lifesaver. Just bought a 2008 Sportster and I had NO idea how to change the battery. This video is perfect.
Happy to help, Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and your Sub Jacob. Ride safe and have a great day.
Adding the little wedge to hold the brass nut is genius. Without that tip I was going crazy the first time I changed the battery. This time it took a little over 5 minutes. Thank you!!!
Happy to Help, I agree. Why they make things difficult.. Thank you for watching and your Sub Ryan. Ride Safe and have a great day.
This helped me so much for my 09 sporty, new lady rider and had no idea what I was doing this is a great tutorial!

Thank you. Great tips especially the zip tie trick. Not many people know that. You’re the best. I couldn’t have changed my rocker box gaskets without your video.
Happy to Help, Thank you for your Sub John. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Dead perfect video. I just changed the battery on my 2013 1200 Custom today and just wish they'd give you one more inch of length on that negative cable. Thank you.
I agree. Harley does not won't you to work on your ride.. They did not make that easy. The manual calls for you to remove the ground from motor, to install battery. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.
@jb27406 - Did you have the ignition key in ON position and then remove the 30 Amp main fuse before you installed the main battery please? I have the same 2013 sportster but don’t know if the key should be in the ON position and main fuse taken out which otherwise would set the alarm. Can you confirm?
@@worldpeace5853 No, I don't remember removing a fuse and I had the switch in the OFF position. I tried to pretty much do it just like Rocco. His technique is perfect. To tell you the truth, I didn't even know I had an alarm on the motorcycle.
jbj27406 That’s the issue. How do you even know if the alarm is working then? I don’t remember but pretty sure I did not have the key in ignition either. The problem now is anybody can remove the battery don’t you think which is a security flaw big time!
@@worldpeace5853 Like I say, I was unaware that my motorcycle even had an alarm system, and I don't know what triggers are required to set it off. Presumably, the alarm would be powered by the battery, so if the battery were removed, there would be no power for the alarm to function. Even if you just cut the battery leads, getting the battery out requires some tools and some time to remove it. I don't leave my bike where anyone can get to it anyway, and I'd be more concerned about a lot of other stuff being stolen off it, rather than the battery. I suggest you google the issues you are concerned with since I'm really not a lot of help on this subject.
Great tutorial! About to change a 2008 Sportster 1200 battery for the first time, and thus looks as though it's going to save me a lot of time and trouble. Thank you!

Excellent tutorial, accurate, perfectly well explained, and with all the necessary details and little tips that make it all really valuable. Two Wheel Rocco: Just changed the battery yesterday following the end of winter. 15 minute job thanks to you and a couple of other videos. One thing you skipped that the Harley manual recommends is disconnecting the negative ground wire located on the other side of the bike. Pain to get to, so I skipped that step and just used caution, as you said, not to contact the frame with the wrench when removing the positive terminal bolt. Used clips, as you suggested, to hold all wiring to the bolts, so no time wasted trying to figure out what wire went where when reinstalling. Used small pieces of grey, sticky, foam window insulation behind the new terminal nuts to hold them in place as I did not have anything resembling the small tubing you used. Huge time-saver as those nuts are like ice cubes; otherwise, they just want to slip all over. It did take me a minute to figure out how to remove the two modules on the side of the battery mounted horizontally to the battery retainer strap. Yours were already disconnected in your video. They just slide forward and pop off. Thanks again Rocco! Saved me a ton of time!
Happy to help. I love to hear when things work out. And yes, the shop manual makes it complicated. They don't want you to work on your motorcycle. Disconnecting that ground wire major major pain in butt.. Thank you for watching and all your support Mike. Ride safe and have a great day.
@Two Wheel Rocco Thank you Rocco. Yes, your video reminded me of all the great shop teachers I had in high school! Men that knew stuff, including proper use of pronouns. I use the bike primarily for Patriot Guard Rider events these days. Needed to get the bike set up for this riding season starting with a funeral tomorrow for a 95-year-old US Army veteran of the Korean conflict that passed away a few days ago. Guys like you sharing what you know pays it forward in ways that will echo in eternity. Thanks again!
Best video and tips on replacing the battery. Very helpful…WISH I would have had this in 2010 when I had to replace the first Harley battery
Happy to help, Thank you for watching and your support. Ride safe and have a great day.
Battery replaced! Thank you. After I received the battery I was a little surprised that i had to put the acid in and charge it before installing but that's only because I didn't know I would have to do that.

Thanks, you saved me a lot of time and trouble. I have a 2006 sporster 1200 low. Worked perfectly.
Do you still have your sportster
I like the zip tie on the cover! The boy and i just picked up an 04 1200C for dirt because he tried to put a battery in and took off the stud nut, what a pain to get that back on!! Thanks for sharing!
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. Yes you have to be patient with that lower hardware on the battery. Thank you for watching and all your support Erik. Ride safe and have a great day. Love those sportsters.
@@TwoWheelRocco rocco, wet sumping of sportster, odd there any way to prevent it or does it just happen off the bike suits for a long time without being started? Drained the oil and refilled then had to take out like 2.5 quarts. I realize now that it was probably not drained since we wanted to change the oil before we started the bike.
Happy to help. What I do is I keep an eye on the oil level on my Sportster can I don't like it to be filled over halfway on the stick. If I go to do an oil change after the bike, sits a little while I will start it up, warm it up and let the bike cycle through. If a bike sumps Oil that means to check valve is weak.. Now just keep an eye on the oil. Don't let your bike sit for a long time because it really is no way to get around it. Unless you wanna empty the oil fill it up, put too much oil and oil in the motor pumps back into the can and overwhelms the whole bike. You got the right idea. Just keep an eye on it. Halfway on the dipstick and you will stay safe. A dead giveaway is when I run my finger on the air cleaner on the Sportster and if I got oil on my finger means I got too much oil in that can. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching all your support Eric, Ride safe and have a great day.
Great video-got her changed with no problem. Fired right up! I was even able to get the negative off first & your directions were great. Thanks!
Happy to Help, Ride Safe and have a great day. Thank you for your Sub El Jefe.
The tip about using the rubber to provide support while installing the screws is gold, especially with the earth lead as it's quite short. I didn't think of that and buggered about when changing battery last time.
Happy to help...Have a great day.
Thats some old school shit right there they don't teach that in any books.
Thanks for the video. When I got my 2006 Sportster 1200L back in 2013, the battery failed after about a year. When I took it out, it had the standard Japanese style connectors, where the cables connected to the TOP of the battery posts. A previous owner had bent the negative cable at close to a 90 degree angle. When I tried to slide the battery out, the bolt on the negative terminal hit the wiring harness. I noticed the insulation on the cable was cracked as well, and the cable seemed too short. I actually disconnected the other end of the cable from the engine so I could pull the battery out far enough to get the bolt out. I replaced the battery with the same type, which was supposed to be for a 2006 Sportster. It had the same type of terminals. I have replaced the battery twice already, and now need another new battery. I removed the old battery, and finally decided something just wasn't right. It shouldn't be that hard to replace a battery, and things just did not fit properly. I never realized that Harleys used a battery where the cables attached to the side of the terminals instead of the top. This time I got the right battery.
Happy to help. I agree, all aftermarket batteries thay don't last long. I come to this conclusion. I buy Harley Davidson battery and they last 3 to 4 years. And they aren't that much more in cost. Thank you for watching and all your support Gerald. Ride safe and happy New Year's.
Appreciate it! I Never realized the other battery had flush mounts and couldn’t figure out why I was struggling with the terminal connections. Good to go now

Why did you not disconected the fuse ?
Merry Xmas and Happy new year Mr. Rocco. needed to know how to remove my Dead Battery, so I watched your video now I will go and remove and charge my dead Battery.
your videos are the best.
Thank you.

Happy to help, There is a good chance you'll need a new battery I would go to Harley Davidson and pick one up $140 or $160 . They're the best batteries out there for these bikes. Any questions just ask thank you for your for watching Raulo.. Ride safe and have a great day.
This video helped me, I could not figure out how to get my battery out😂 after the late 90’s these things became almost impossible to work on because everything is so tight and cramped😂

Thank you, Kindly. I got the battery changed out then realized the fuse was blown so I replaced that too. Now to change out the air intake filter...Have a Great Day.
Happy to help...Thank you for the Sub....Ride Safe..
Thanks for the hose tip it helped me from losing my brain ! Are used a heat sink hose and worked out ..
I have a sportster 2015 custom put 270 miles on it in two years that's why my battery died and I never charge it my own fault !
Happy to hear it helped out...Ride Safe..
Just as an added hint to everyone if you pull out the main fuse the bike is completely dead and you won't have to worry about any problems because the bike is just a paper weight at that point... And it take 5 seconds to take it in and out so I would do that instead of risking getting a jolt from the bike saying hello and is a ton safer as well
You are at the battery.....That is before the main fuse...Frame is ground and positive is live at the battery...Just be careful...Thank you for your time..Ride Safe.
It is clear, regardless of the main fuse you shall never allow positive and body of the bike to meet. I mean if you connect with main fuse in and connect the last terminal (plus) there will still be a small spark
Great video! I now feel confident changing the battery. Thanks.
Happy to Help.....Have a great day..
I have a 2013 883 superlow. The dealer told me to pull the main fuse out even though I don't have an alarm. When I went to put the newly charged battery in there was no sound , no lights, zilch. I did put the fuse back in before I tried to start it. The connections are tight and I think the main fuse is fine as well as the 15 amp fuses. I should have watched you first. The owners manual says to disconnect the neg. ground cable also, but that isn't necessary if you are careful with the negative cable. I like your no nonsense approach. Any advice is welcome.
Remove negative first....install positive first and you will never get hurt..Removing main fuse is always a good practice. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Thanks for info and hose hack to save trouble Roc
Thank you for all your Support. Ride Safe and have a great day
Always excellent videos. I have a question about the battery cable connection. Do you recommend using thread lock to keep the screws and nuts tight on the battery? Thanks and hope all is well.
Happy to help, I would not use any kind of thread lock on the battery hardware. It could interfere with the connection and you don't want to have problems later on. Thank you for watching all your support.

Both later model sportsters that I’ve bought had damaged negative terminals because of not angle in the cable downwards. It can be difficult to do, but must be done or risk damage ramming it into the oil tank.
I agree. HD BS. Damn shame. They don't won't you to work on your bike. Happy New Years.

Hi, Quick question pls. When I remove the battery compartment box on my 2013 custom XL 1200 sportster I saw two fuses, the main fuse and the other similar fuse like thing. My question is inspite of ignition key not in the key slot ON position, the alarm did not go off when I removed the 30 amp main fuse. Isn’t this a security flaw since anyone could just remove the screw and take the battery off? I do hear that the key should be in ignition ON and the main fuse must be cut off before the battery is taken off. Is this right? Am I missing something here?
I don't think it matters. Pull the main and go to work.. Hope that helps. Thank you for your Support.
So mine does or doesn’t have an alarm? Is this not a security flaw? There is no need to have the key in the ignition slot then?
I don't Know...Ask your HD Dealer. Let us know how that works out.
Two Wheel Rocco Thank you. By the way your videos are so nice and educative. Please keep up the good work and thanks again!
Thank you Santosh.

This is so helpful but I took apart my battery before watching this and knowing I should have used clamps…. now I’m not sure which wire goes positive or negative. Any guidance?

Thanks for the video! did those square nuts come with that battery or did you have to buy them yourself?
Happy to help. I'm a big fan of going to the dealer for the Harley Davidson batteries. All the rest just seem to fail the dealer gives you a one year warranty. Thank you for watching and all your support keep up. Ride safe and have a great day. Batteries are a tough subject these days. How times have changed China killing us.

Any way to diagnose the battery without removing it? I can't seem to get my bike to start, it just clicks, even if I have a charger connected for hours, or try it on junk start mode. I want to ensue it's the battery before I buy another one and go through replacement.
Happy to help the first question is how old is the battery second make sure your leads are tight. Put a voltmeter on it and see what it read . Most likely just buy a battery at the dealer, Batteries at these other stores, they aren't that good. Let us know how it works out. If the batteries over two years old replace it, OK look at it this way. if you get stuck somewhere you're gonna pay dearly now if you can't start your bike and it gos click click click and you check your cables it's a battery. Thank you for all your support. Ride safe and have a great day. Let us know how it works out.
@TwoWheelRocco I've tried charging but with the charger in jump mode, it goes rr-clickclickclickclick.... if I take off the charger it just goes clickclickclick first fast clicks then slow.
The bike sat for a few months while I had other things to attend to. Just trying to eliminate other items, like fuses, wiring, starter, etc
FWIW, the battery I think was new late 2021. Another thing - I'm in Florida, and I know batteries die early deaths here in cars.
Any other brands to recommend?
EDIT: I left the charger on a little longer and in jump mode it started. I'll still look for another battery but at least I know it starts and runs.
I wouldn't make it complicated, a new battery and the bikes as good as new..@@stellijer

please show how you get a fuel pack install and find space for every thing
I placed the fuel pack on side of battery...against metal battery strap. I placed it right above the 30 amp fuse with the velcro they supply.. Place side cover carefully...Strap cover on...Hope that helped....Let me know.
I charged up the old battery and it is keeping a charge, but I get zilch no sound, lights, etc. Do you think I should just buy a new battery? Everything is hooked up right and the fuses are fine.
If your bike starts....And you have no lights you need to fix that....If Battery is bad replace and start there...Let me know how it works out. Ride Safe ... Have a great day.
I will get help Wednesday. The battery is holding a 12.5 charge, but engine doesn't start, no lights zilch. I'll let u know what happens sir. No voltage on the main fuse, but the fuse is good. Thanks!
Does the motor turn over at all? Or at least a click noise?
no
Let me know........Have a great day...
did that to, just no place for connector to ecu
You have to disconnect the plug from ECU and place the fuel pac plugs in between the Male and female plug of ecu.. You will have to remove battery to fish plug up in. Hope that helped. Let me know.
I wish i would have made a video...Move thinks around you will make it work. Sorry could not help.
Jamming tunes in the background man lol
70s lives in my garage,
'The Hard Part' is that (black) ground cable is not long enough, I've had battery issues (recently), I've had to wiggle, wiggle & wiggle (some more) the cable from its base to get an extra 1/4". Frustrating. I guess bumps from city streets caused the terminal (on mine) to bend - it's a replacement from the original HD, so it will be 3 batteries in less than 10k. I found a few websites for a replacement, the weather though dictates its necessity. I have hook up the batter-tender extension though...
