  • I had the wonderful ability to fly with Derek Piva. He and I met through reddit and he had some time here in Cali so we went up and flew. Failing forward is a real thing and boy did I learn a lot from this awesome aviator. Some flights you don't perform as well as you would want to but come out on the other side a better aviator because of it.

Flying hands free is the best way to go. Much less tiring.

      Hey John,
With Derek I learned that precise aircraft control and high level flying starts by understanding the concept behind hands free flying and why that’s effective for all stages of your journey in aviation. The wing itself was built to fly whether it’s a Cessna or a Boeing jet, and the airplane at your command will go to where you put it gracefully and accurately just like an autopilot would control it, even if you don’t have one. The only difference between a plane with autopilot and one without in commanding smooth and precise control is the pilots understanding of how the plane flies in regards to its flight controls. When I was shooting ILS’s I first was flying the plane down to minimums chasing the needle instead of leading it and firmly placing the yolk to each altitude stepdown . With Derek’s flying I learned graceful attitudes and let the plane fly itself, more of floating in the sky to each step down point, smoothly lining up with the localizer; maintaining both all the way to touchdown with this level of flying. Understanding of aerodynamics and flight control actions and reactions (ex. Use Over banking tendency on the rudder to turn) is key. I highly recommend “fly the wing - billy walker” it has a lot of good info on learning aviation!

OMG..that was painful to watch. You can't have someone unfamiliar with SoCal airspace fly safety pilot for you, no matter their rating. He needed to be on that vector out of Brackett to KCCB. We have big, tall mountains around these parts. Where does Derek fly out of? Use your rudders is his best advice?!?!...go to Flabob and get some taildragger training.

    hard to listen too.

Why would anybody after many hours of hands on instrument training a week before a test, revert to flying hands off, what nonsense.😅
