This whole video is amazing, you’re a hell of a teacher. I just had a Bayliner 185 given to me that had sat for about 12 years. I am brand new to boating but am not afraid to wrench when I can. Got the motor running after replacing all lubricants and impeller but noticed a bad vibration at certain motor tilt angles. Took off the outdrive and the gimble bearing is shot. (I had not greased it up before taking it out, again, newbie did t know about it, but don’t think it would have mattered) I am replacing the gimble bearing at this time. My u-joints seem fine, (bellows was bone dry, and no rust) I was wondering if there is supposed to be any play between the pinion and shaft, sort of a backlash like on a car axle? I really don’t want to have to do what you did here right now if I don’t have to, at least not till winter. If/when I do, this video series is where I’m coming!👊

In regards to play, each drive will be ever-so-slightly different in terms of (thousands of an inch) gap between gears and referencing your exact serial number service manual will be best. Thank you for reply. Are you talking about the 4 bolt on the very top of the out drive? What would cause drive oil be leaking inside the boat?
Happy to help. If bellows fail, water will sneak into bellows and begin to beat up oil seals. Once oil seals fails, water sneaks into outdrive and begins to degrade gears and shafts along with everything else inside case.

When you put all the new parts in, did you measure and re-shim it? I just found one of my bearings on the drive gear was bad and ordered new ones. Book says it needs to be re-shimmed so I ordered the tools to do so but didn't see you do it in this video. I'm guessing you did it off camera before placing the drive shaft back into the housing and tightening the castle nut?
Thanks for watching, shimming must be performed to exact guidance set forth within your exact serial number service manual.
Because of that, we chose not to add this to the video as it may have given misleading instructions.

How do you no if you need to replace oil seal with out taking it apart? Whorls gear oil leak into the boat?
Great question! If you open top access cap on outdrive, you can gain access to internal drive where the yoke shaft feeds into the vertical gear.
If you see a mismatched discolored milky fluid rather than clean gear oil, it’s likely that the seals are the cause of letting water in.
Once water sneaks in, it mixes with the oil and gives it a milky look…and degrades the oils performance on lubricating gears.

Hello again Micheal! I have just received my vertical gear assembly (shaft, gear, and two bearings) Can I press these together myself or should I have it done at a boat shop? Thanks!
Hey Eric, thanks for reaching back out to us. That will be personal preference & if you have the means to do so, not a bad idea.
However for us, we didn’t have the resources to properly press parts together to factory spec, so we had our local marina do it.

I have an alpha one gen 2 with gear whine and some fine metal shavings on the magnet. less than 100 hrs in service. On a 5.0 MPI in a Baja islander 202, your thoughts?
Thanks for watching, it shouldn’t be doing that with less than 100hrs on the outdrive…🤔
If taken to a shop, they will want to sell you a new outdrive…🙄
Draining gear lube and refilling with new is next best step. Run engine for 10 hours and check magnetic probe for shavings.
If prove is filled with shavings, you can then begin to entertain the thoughts of rebuilding outdrive.

Is there a tourqe spec for the retainer just for the u-joint. You only tightened it to hand tight to seat it. Our book says 200lbs torque.
Thanks for watching, if your serial number service manual states to torque retainer nut to 200lbs, we definitely recommend following manual.
