One of the better tutorials on the pen tool. I like how you explained all the simple things like clicking to make a corner point or click and dragging to make a curve, along with short-cuts like holding space bar or ctrl-C to save time. Many of these things are easy and instinctive for experienced users, but new users like me have no idea. Thanks!!
Thanks for making this video. I think its incredible how people put in their personal time to make free videos to help others and get insulted and criticized. If these people think they know better then by all means make your own video or move on.
MAN I was howling at the top of my lungs over my life being wasted because I didn't know some of these techniques, thanks for teaching me!!! I actually didn't go to Digital Arts today because I was feeling sick as hell so instead I watched tutorials so I didn't feel so lame for skipping and man, it felt like I learned more from these sessions then I did the whole time I was in class! /Face palms/
Despite the comments regarding using the correct technical names,, this tutorial is great. Learning the pen tool isn't an easy task and using your imagination to make us understand the difference between certain points (who cares about the technical names) is brilliant. Thanks for this.
Window ->image tracing ->CHOSE WHICHEVER PRESET U WANT -> expand ->DONE :D much easier and saves a lot of time. I'm glad they put these options in newer versions so we don't have to waste time anymore :)
Great and straight to the point. Very helpful as I am tracing many images that will not work with Live Trace (too blurred or colors don't have enough contrast). Trying to find the little nuances about Illustrator tools from the included adobe help is a lost cause.
Thank you for this video. With it I was able to finally understand the pen tool as more than just some insane curve making *thing* that ruined my life. :D
hey, great video. I was wondering if you could tell me when does one use Picas vs, Inches, or Points, etc. What are they all good for. For example I want to start creating artwork for 24x36 poster to sizes 18X24 some 8.5 x 11 but I'm not sure if i should set them up in inches. I know it has to be CMYK for print for sure. Another thing too, I want to make some vector art for T-Shirts, should i be setting that up in Points or inches. All of this information is so confusing. I have two AI books that i was looking at tonight each one cost about $50 and Neither book Addresses this. Its crazy. Thank you so much --have a great evening, GREAT videos.
I'm new to AI but it seems to me that it's really easy to switch between units (Edit Menu->Preferences->Units), so just use whichever units make sense to you!
Pixel Moshpit I'm lazy so I tried to used image trace tool to do it"faster " but I got a lot of anchors and extra lines . So when I tried to modify it just got a mess
Hi. I press "p" to start using the "pen" on a box using "M". When i go to the left upper corner of the box, the pen tool is changing in (-) and appears a pink text "anchor" what is this? PLease help me. I need to start using the pen (with "*") startign from the corner... Heeeelp :)
Very good tutorial, although I have to say that is not working for me. I simply cannot find a menue with an icon "Template". Yes I am using Photoshop CS6. Yes I did click on the drop down menue. For one or another reason there is no Template.
The ability of people to descend into squabbling as one scrolls down the comments on youtube is disappointing. Even on something educational like this.
Heard of google? You know... There might be another person that had the same problem and asked on a website on google... Google the problem and get some answers... How dumb can people get?
DamnImFancy Look, In the upper right-ish hand corner you have two squeares, if it doesnt fill up, that means that the square should be white with a red line across. Just click on it and change the color...
If you watch your own video you will see that you dropped your first node which you call anchor points at 1:43 in the video. Once you dropped your second node and started to pull the curve and then let go, you will see that in the menu bar above it says "Handles" showing a image of such.. I own a graphics company and when beginning artists call for drawing advice they describe things in all sorts of manners leaving us to figure out what they are talking about then giving them the correct industry standard names to things so they can effectively communicate moving forward. Regardless you're a good man for sharing your knowledge with others.
While you are at it, once you drop your first node then your second and begin to pull a curve , don't let go of the mouse button. With that curve pulled and the mouse button held press and hold the control key and move your mouse around see what happens. Then press and hold the ALT key and move your mouse and see what happens.
Michelle, before this goes any further into an "intellectual" pissing contest let me explain. I could care less about what you think I should describe control handles on an anchor point. Yes, slap that into google they're also called "anchor points" as well or better yet... it might be better to look at what the subtools of the pen tool are named. Owning a graphics company, you should know that, as the terminology has been around for a long time now. However, owning a graphics company doesn't guarantee you to be an expert in the field. It does qualify someone on being an asshole that assumes the latter, on someone's beginner pen tool TH-cam video comment section. (Which makes me wonder why you're here?) If Bezier strength bar and the following past and future metaphor isn't working for you on an intellectual level, by all means find another channels that suits your delicate sensibilities.
You are the wanna be as compared to professionals which you have just proven. You make a video to teach others yet you don't want to be taught by others and actually somehow take offense to being taught. That's outstanding. Professionals want to and are glad to teach and learn from others as well as be corrected by others which is part of the learning process for all of us despite level differences. As to why I am here? Even at my level I can still learn from even entry level artists. There is always something to learn from someone again regardless of level differences .In this instance by watching your video I learned what not to do which is equally important as learning what to do. With that said you should seriously consider watching a "pen tool basics" video yourself which someone else made in order to know what to do and then re watch your own video in order to learn what not to do.

+DocMisty No problem, glad I could help :)
Dear Sullyman,
I have watched a number of pen tutorials. Yours was the best so far!
Thanks for making this video. I think its incredible how people put in their personal time to make free videos to help others and get insulted and criticized. If these people think they know better then by all means make your own video or move on.
IKR.....i always say that....hence i never try to complain about the videos.

One of the very few tutorials that demonstrates troubleshooting, thank you
Despite the comments regarding using the correct technical names,, this tutorial is great. Learning the pen tool isn't an easy task and using your imagination to make us understand the difference between certain points (who cares about the technical names) is brilliant. Thanks for this.
Sullyman, well done! Clear, clean and no toooooo much to take in. Just right. Thanks, Nick

When You have a lot of Lines crossing together is there any easy way to cut the lines that I don't need without cutting the other lines?
You can use the scissor tool or the eraser to go in and cut the intersections.
Pixel Moshpit muchas gracias
Pixel Moshpit I'm lazy so I tried to used image trace tool to do it"faster " but I got a lot of anchors and extra lines . So when I tried to modify it just got a mess

Who tested it?
the beeping D:
Why is there a beeping sound D;
Captain Yang The reason why the audio has beeping is that I have crummy equipment and don't have funding to create great recordings unfortunately.
Sullyman Aww so that's why! It's okay..Great video and helpful tutorial btw! I hope you keep making more :D **thumbs up**
Krazy , get out of here. That was funny, really funny

Bezier strength bars lol. They are called handkes.
Are you sure? Never heard of handkes.
