TEARING APART MY 57 CHEVY

  • Today at Welder Up, my son Kash, his buddy Anthony, and myself are removing the engine from my 57’ Chevy. Once we removed the cylinder heads, I noticed some broken pistons, so we decided the project of the day was to see what we could do it fix it. How much HP would you put back in it for a daily driver?
    Thanks for watching,
    - Steve

    The famous 57..bet its more of an animal now... I remember watching episodes with kash & chase when they where little kicking barbers ass tearing apart & making go carts.... & now they have grown so much to be working side by side with u.. Awesome man... God bless u & ur 2 mini Steve's....

    Steve, my son is an LS nutcase. He's wanting to put one on his Huski riding mower! Anyway, we watched the show from day one, so we saw the episode with the '57. He actually said that he wondered how long the LS III would last with the turbo with the compression, and the ring gap. Now I owe him a dollar...

    Ring gaps weren't opened up for boost. But better pistons will help along with the proper gap.

      Absolutely right! With a .028-.030 ring gap that engine would have been fine to 800-900hp. Throw some 110 and meth injection and it would have lived a long happy life.

    • @lskiller1903

      Ring gap is a common problem especially with junkyard LS engines and cheap turbo kits, people just don't take the time and effort to widen the gap. There's another guy here on TH-cam that can't keep a turbo LS together because because he don't gap the rings!!

    Position tops popping on the LS is common even without boost. Would look at cryo treatment for all moving internals could possibly help with heat issues.

  • @79tazman
    @79tazman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    factory flat top pistons work it's not the compression it's the ring gap you must gap the rings in order for heat expansion if not they have the factory gapped rings they will expand and crack the pistons like you have done. I learned the hard way too the first LS I tossed boosted I got it all together and in the car then remembered to gap the rings but ran it anyway lol. you gotta gap the rings plus every ring manufacture has different ring gap specs for the type of boost you plan on running some say 28 thou top and bottom ring.

    The compression ratio really doesnt have anything to do with it, especially if it's on E85. Now if it's on pump gas then yes lower it. I'm guessing you cracked the top and 2nd ring land on the number 7 cylinder. I've got a ls3 2010 camaro with a single turbo and just did exactly that. What I figured out when I was replacing the #7 cylinder piston is the ring gap on the ls3 is ridiculously tight from the factory like 0.015 so what happens especially out here in vegas I live out here as well, is with boost the pistons get hot enough that the rings expand and they butt and when that happens it literally tries to tear the top of the piston off. So all I did was open the ring gap up to 25 thou and I've been good to go since. Hell I did some pills last night at around 16psi zero issues.
