- This week, the guys at Little Wars TV review "Fire as She Bears," a 2003 set of rules published by Starboard Tack Press for fleet action battles in the Age of Sail. We score rules based on five categories, then offer a final total score at the end.

Another great video guys. I noticed that you took a little extra time going over some of the mechanics like moving & firing - this is definitely something I’d like to keep seeing. The review videos are awesome; however, a lot of the earlier ones didn’t really give you much detail as to how the game plays. Having a little insight into the mechanics definitely helps me in making my purchase decision.

Very good review, and you echoed my thought about the rules. I would say that the QRS has the smallest type face and packs loads of information. I feel that I would like to write a QRS just to cover sailing, firing and morale; to incorporate those odd rules that appear in strange places!

Hah, we wish! We play a LOT of different rules in the club, but whenever possible we do like to spotlight smaller, independent publishers and authors. These days when most rules cost $20 just for a PDF, it's nice to see a great system like Fire as She Bears for less than half of that amount!

Based on your enthusiasm in last weeks video, I went over and picked up the bundle pack of the rules, Trafalgar, and the signaling rules. I haven't had a chance to read them yet, but did flip through them. Too bad the website isn't in existence, or at least it is 't where they say it is in the rules.
At this point in time, I think as a wargaming community we need to just embrace a site like Board Game Geek that is going to be around from here on and use their forums. They have all the functionality that is needed (forums, files, etc) and we could have EVERY game in a centralized location. Trying to track down a different website/forum for every game, getting approved, and then reading through posts that are 10+ years old for every game wears on you after a while.

I should've asked sooner but: What was the scale of the ships used and How large are the octagon bases? You said that you made them yourselves. Need to find them online now. Big Thanks for the Tutorial on the 'flashing cannon' lights! Ive never thought of an octagon sys., but it looks simple enough.

We've talked about that, but hosting a forum can involve a good bit of work moderating and keeping out spam bots. But it is a topic of discussion around here
BTW - where did you get the 3” octagonal acrylic bases? Litko doesn’t carry them
I got mine from Litko. The Octagon shape is an option in the base maker selection criteria. I got clear plastic so they always match the terrain cloth. The ships are mounted with magnets.

Hmmm... I'll have to pull my set out and do a more detailed comparison, but the screen shots of the rules look suspiciously like the rules from Avalon Hill's "Wood Ships and Iron Men circa 1975.
Interesting. I wonder if the British not running low on ammunition is down to doctrine? Once read that the Royal Navy whenever in port fully restocked even if they hadn't used much ammunition, powder, and other stores.

Could you guys review ships? Who makes best and do any come pre-painted?
We used 1/1200 Langtons, which are probably the nicest models you can buy in this scale. They are gorgeous. There isn't much in the way of pre-paints except for "Sails of Glory," and you'll want to touch them up a bit with some detail work. But for pre-paints they generally look pretty good.
More importantly, where did you get the cool wind rose? I need one of those.
WysteriaGuitar Steve 3D printed that from a file he found on-line and added some magnets!
Nice video, but I have to know what are the simulated canon fire puffs made from? Looks like polyfil and some kind of micro led candle light?

@@LittleWarsTV Posting this here in case you see it, rather on the comments on the tutorial video. How does one get them to light in a series instead of simultaenously, please? Using different LEDs that flash at different rates? The link to the LEDs in the tutorial is broken now. Thanks, and love the review and the Trafalgar game! Have re-based all of my Langton ships on 3" octagons, and can't wait for my first game
Good review, been waiting on this one. FWIW, Games Workshop's old Space Fleet game used bespoke octagonal bases which I don't think have been used since and were moderately pointless mechanically. So there's one other one.
There's also Blood Bowl, which technically uses octagonal bases.
By that standard, chess uses octagonal bases. Sheesh.
Have you played general ancients rulesets like DBMM or ADLG?
If so, what do you think of them?
We used to play a lot of DBA/DBM in the club, spanning a couple of different eras (ancient Greece, Rome, crusades, War of the Roses...) but we have not tried ADLG yet. A review of DBA is somewhere in the pipeline, but I'd say the club consensus is that we stopped playing and have little interest in resuming.
Could you do a video on more general rulesets versus more focused rulesets? That would be really interesting to watch.
This looks great! Im slowly introducing historical warming to clubs in my area. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to get ships?
Sea Dog Game Studios, they have ships in 6mm scale and 15mm scale. Try Sailpower if you want a more intense sailing game.

I'm afraid not--NC is a bit far for us. We typically attend the 3 big HMGS East conventions each year, plus a couple of the smaller regional cons (like Barrage in MD the last weekend of the month).

It seems that most Age of Sail rules focus on the Napoleonic period. Are there stats for battles during the Seven Years War period available for these rules?
Check out the upcoming 'Oak & Iron' rules from Firelock Games. They're currently accepting late pledges to their kickstarter. The ships are 1:600. It covers the period from 1650-1730
I keep looking at that, the main thing holding me back is convincing my friends to play naval warfare. I already had to lead them by the nose to historicals in the first place.
To be fair - if they're not gonna play naval warfare, they're not going to play 'FASB' either.
The scale is much larger, but Firelock's first game, 'Blood & Plunder' has rules for shipborne combat, amphibious raids and land skirmishes. It's not quite a "pirate" game, but that's a good way to sell it and seems to work for pulling in people who wouldn't normally play something as 'stuffy' as Napoleonics or what have you. It also uses mechanics more similar to the fantasy and scifi games, it doesn't have any charts or tables, no complex math, and no grognardy stuff about the different protection rates afford by French linen vs Spanish cotton jackets or whatever. You can knock out a game in an hour.
B&P will work with O&I when the latter is released. There are also sniffs on the wind of a possible "mass battle" type of Pike and Shot system with more emphasis on 28mm scale battles between two players, than other popular games which cover than period, and that should also play nicely within the system.
@@SlyBlu7 B&P I have, and was easily able to convince a buddy of a land battle of that. I have a sloop, long boat, and canoa which I think I have him convinced to try a small fight with that. If, and it is a big if, he gets sold on that I may be able to convince him of Oak and Iron, as he has been out of the miniature world for a few years, but is considering getting back in. I am thinking of trying the "only need a few ships and no terrain to speak of" angle, as I am also trying to convince him to scale down from 28mm as a whole, which brings concern of not just needing a new army, but new terrain to go with.
I'd be interested to see a one on one, ship to ship battle. Slugging it out until devastation or surrender! ✌
For single ship-to-ship battles we've used a rule set called "Heart of Oak."

I'm currently searching for an age of sail war game but without any joy so far. I've noticed that finding details about the few rules sets is often difficult, or perhaps I'm just looking in the wrong places.
I was hoping that some one might be able to suggest a good rule set for 1v1 - 6v6 in terms of ship numbers. Ideally I've been looking for something based around the time of the Anglo-Dutch wars. Any help is appreciated.

Wait a minute. Did I just hear that Steve likes a card-driven game? Glad I was sitting down... Played FASB once years ago, IIRC it was Russians vs. Swedes or something like that. I remember it playing well, but no one in my group was keen to rebase their ships onto octagons. Did you get yours from Litko?
What ruleset would you recommend for ship-to-ship actions?
Heart of Oak is a good game with just one or two ships per player. It's much more detailed.
For age of sail, communications and morale are huge factors. I do not feel that you sufficiently addressed this aspect. I have Close Action and like how it handles signaling.

Can i use this ruleset with a set of master and commander miniatures by warlordgames?? The set provides a total of 9 ships...
Oh yes. Absolutely. The rules shine in big games, but with 4-6 ships on a side you can totally use it and have fun

We've used Heart of Oak for smaller battles with just a ship or two per side.

I was involved in a conversation with some wargaming buddies about Combat Patrol, so I decided to go back and watch that rules review. From that, I realize in my previous comment I erred, and it is Keith, not Steve, who nominally dislikes card-driven games. My apologies Steve.
As sailors are you happy the octagons means close hauled is 45 degrees? Square rigged SOL unlikely to do better than 60-65____. A fudge worth hving?
Excellent review guys! You've caught my interest in this rule system. I may have missed it, but what type of dice are used? Also, Steve did you 3D print out the ships? If so, can you provide more info on that. Also, the terrain from the game looked awesome; i.e. wind dial and the smoke/fire effect. Will you guys put out a simple 2-minute terrain build on the smoke stuff? Also, as mentioned below, where /how did you get the wind dial? Thanks again!
FASB use D6's for all rolls. The ships are Langton Miniatures and are in 1/1200 scale.
And Steve 3D printed the compass and wind indicator. Lastly, look for the cannon fire tutorial very soon!
