I've spent hours upon hours trying to decide the best way to go about this.
I make 6-12min long youtube videos, and trying to decide between just paying for cloud storage as a backup for everything, or invest in external hard drives. But external hard drives are not reliable indefinitely so I would need to buy 2 of them to do a double back up.
Cloud storage vs Double External hard drive??? What's your thoughts?! I can't come to a decision lol

Audio is often so underrated, especially with unexperienced filmmakers. On set and in post. Not only don't people understand the concept of shutting the f up for a minute when recording room tone, but also that it is one of the things that are best when unnoticed.

  • @voxorox
    @voxorox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Quick story to illustrate how big audio can be:
When I was a film student, ages ago, one of our projects was to edit a fight scene from the old TV show Gunsmoke. This is the early 90s, pre-digital, so we were editing film on Steenbecks.
Most of the edits came out alike, except mine. I used shots because they looked great, but some had bad recorded audio. One had a very loud bang when an actor fell into part of the set. So I worked with the audio track and fixed it. For that one shot I chopped out an impact sound from a different take and spliced it in. It let me use these great shots, and made my edit stand out from the rest. By the time I was done, my audio tape looked like it had been put through a shredder and been reassembled, but it sounded smooth.
That decision saved my edit and got me a good grade on it.

    • @voxorox

...and for some strange reason, I still have the reels almost 30 years later.

I think you searched the comments section looking for these:
The 7 Laws of Film Editing
    1. THOU SHALT watch every frame of raw footage at least twice, the start.
(1st time to familiarize, then 2nd time to write notes.)
    2. THOU SHALT nurture the relationship with the director.
    3. THOU SHALT find any shot instantly. Organization is paramount.
    4. THOU SHALT factor extra time for renders, exports, errors & crashes.
    5. THOU SHALT attempt edits that shouldn't work. You'll be surprised.
    6. THOU SHALT spend more time on audio. It's the glue of your edit.
    7. THOU SHALT cut for the scene, but always in the context of the whole film.
(Macro on a Micro view of the film the whole time)

As an Emmy nominated editor and having spent 50 years in the Network TV trenches..from Ampex quads, CMX, Avid, DaVinci and the Edit Droid etc. This little instructional clip was brilliant and right on the money. Thanks for your input Vashi..I'm sure all the new comers to this important and critical cinematic art form known as "Editing", will find this extremely helpful. So with all that being said...I just had to drop this:
TOP TEN LIES EDITORS TELL THEIR PRODUCERS:
    10. It's just a preview glitch
    9. It's out of the safe area, you'll never see that on the air
    8. It won't really look like that
    7. I'll fill out the paperwork tomorrow
    6. Why no, I don't mind working on Saturday
    5. Oh, don't go by THAT monitor
    4. It works better as a cut!
    3. That glitch is on the source tape
    2. I?ll have all your changes done by the end of the day
    1. No, I agree. It?s much better that way.

    Great commandments!
That's why it is important to edit as many movies as possible,
You will always discover new ideas when finishing a project.
We all think we can just get these ideas while thinking about something, but like this movie says, we can't even think through how 2 scenes will look like, till we combine them. How do we want to be able to get the new ideas that we would get after editing, by just thinking about the edit!

The first scripted drama I ever cut the director only had 4 weeks in town so wanted to be in edit day 1. He plopped the script supervisor book on my desk and told me to cut those takes, I didn't even get a chance to watch the rushes with him. It was THE MOST FRUSTRATING experience ever. I tried to communicate to him we should watch the rushes and he disregarded it saying he saw them. It's a wonder he even works as a director, but there you have it. The first assembly was terrible by the way. Thankfully I was able to rectify this later on in the weeks as he was overseeing a second episode so my 3rd and 4th weeks were left alone so I could fix what was going so wrong. He walked away saying he learned something which is fine, but wow...cutting by a binder isn't the way to cut at all.
    Great points in this video.

The 1-2 frame crossfade on sound clips... So many times people have asked me why I so religiously do it on all sound clips. But killing all the clicks, you so notice them when you know how to get rid of them.
I mean, it is so ubiquitous, that I'm wondering, why is it not applied by default in edit programs? Why is it up to me to make sure that a sound clip doesn't start or end at a non-zero sample? In how many scenario would a non-zero sample start and end actually benefit an editor?
Ok. I know, some people would point to the meticulous task of editing syllables in speech... But those guys would never accept an NLE's "precision" of 1/24's of a second anyway. So those people need the sample accurate ability of 1/96000 of a second that DAW's provide.
So why do NLE makers not add such an easy to overlook function?
It is so strange for me.

1.) Watch every shot 2 Times.
the first time it will wash over you means u will understand the meaning and story but on the second time make notes.
dont directly jump to clips. observe and feel and think how can u make it better.
2.) Nurture your relationship with director.
Always be positive, if u are negative your director will be negative. over new ways to look at it, be calm.
Get refrence point, what kind of tone they want.
    3.) Find any shot instantly.
Organize your shots in the beginning. it will save u later.
4.) Factor some extra time for rendors, crashes. etc.
sometimes u have to stop early before the time. in order to give rendor some time.
5.) Attempt edit that doesn't work. sometimes when u make a movie it's not always like what u have in ur head so try to use unwanted clips.
    6.) work on audio more.
7.) Cut for the scene but always have the whole film in ur mind.
*"Very edit affects the whole film"*

I am diggin number 2! How about we expand it to not only the director but any collaborating partner. Especially while "in school".
Maybe a cool trick is to consider/imagine the partner _as if_ they are the director and the partner also agrees to do the same?!

Im fascinated by results editors and directors can achive. For me.. I'm at the stage I consider it magical. However I can and I have made short 2min clips and most of them took me ~80h to make. But whaching this i feelt good, as if I'm on the right track, sice I can relate to every advice.. It coresponds with my uneducated experiance of story making/telling. Thank you.
