Air pollution has been linked to a variety of serious mental and physical health problems in adults, including anxiety, depression, and neurodegenerative disorders. In terms of cognitive health, studies suggest that exposure to elevated particulate matter levels can lead to significant short-term cognitive declines.
Over the past decade, researchers have found that high levels of air pollution may damage children's cognitive abilities, increase adults' risk of cognitive decline and possibly even contribute to depression.
What air pollutants cause brain damage?
Cory-Slechta's research has largely focused on lead and mercury, neurotoxic metals that are abundant in air pollution. “Ultrafine particles are like little Trojan horses,” she says. “Pretty much every metal known to humans is on these.” Metal-toting particles that reach the brain can directly damage neurons.
