    The humor breakdown I mentioned: • 4 Jokes That Will Make...
    Louis CK is one of the most respected comedians in the world. And part of it is because he seems so effortlessly funny. There’s no big action like Jim Carrey or Robin Williams, no elaborately clever set ups, just simple truths that make audiences crack up
    But it’s not that simple. Because while the truth makes for good art, it isn’t always funny. Louis CK has devised a way of delivering his stories and jokes in packages that are different from what most of us do. And because of that he’s able to create hilarious moments from everyday commentary. Today we’re going to explore 3 of Louis techniques that will make you make just about anything funnier
    1:00 Louis CK times it where this Stephen Colbert clip shows
    4:24 Louis CK repeats the punchline like in this Jimmy Fallon clip
    7:27 Louis CK acts his jokes out like in The Tonight Show and more

    It's nice that you compared him to himself in the beginning of his carreer, it shows that even that best of the bests have had issues on their craft and overcame them. Since you're always here in Brazil and knows how to speak portuguese, it would be nice if you did a video on Tatá Werneck, she is really funny and unnusual. It's a shame it would be hard to explain her humor and what she's saying to american viewers... Love Your Work man!!!!

    • @YourWifesBoyfriend
      @YourWifesBoyfriend 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If he was honest, he would include how Louis has become less funny, but he misunderstands instead and claims it's how Louis makes things funny. Like the physical stuff..... That's a way that Louis has gone downhill. At his peak, he didn't need physicality or sound effects because the material was so good and the delivery so expert.

    • @EdwardViaTomato
      @EdwardViaTomato 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dan D, it's all subjective... but before you can just say he's "less funny" now, you'd have to compare everything he's writing/producing/directing/etc, know what's entirely his or influenced by him, and then go from there... but that's a lot of stuff so I don't think you can just say he's not funny altogether... perhaps an argument is that one thing takes from the other thing which you value more... the acclaim he gets for all sorts of stuff certainly makes it seem like he's doing pretty well in terms of funniness

      Pilkington is genuinely funny without meaning to be. He's one of the few people in a public forum who genuinely "thinks outside the box". His comments about living at Petra in Jordan are brilliant. (You live somewhere that overlooks something beautiful, not in it, like everyone thinks to do!)
      The more Ricky Gervais tried to rip on him the more Karl was right!

    Nice summary! I found it reminiscent of something Louis has talked about, which is the idea of "staying in the bit": commit to the joke you're telling. This is pretty intuitive when the joke is killing, but he says that it works also when the joke is not being enjoyed by the audience. According to him, it allows the audience to *dispense their disgust/disappointment/whatever on the character of the bit, rather than the comedian* him/herself.

    I love Louis CK. One thing I love about him is that he can introduce a vulgar or disgusting thought to his audience and then laugh at his audience for the way they reacted. I remember one joke like this he told, and right after their reaction, he said, "That's not me, that's just me laughing at your reaction to that thought." He really knows how to play with his audience.

    Like all great artists and performers, he constantly works, and when he's not on stage, he's writing and practicing material for the next time. He's not afraid to throw material away. He writes so much it doesn't matter if he gets rid of the junk that doesn't hit the mark, then we the audience only get the good stuff. But I'm sure he struggles getting it right first.

    I think there was a video where Louis even admits that he makes his jokes more funny by making it sound like he just came up with the idea, like he's improving from the previous bit. In reality, everything he does is very polished and calculated. He knows it'll be more funny if it sounds like we just thought of it. I think a lot of comedians do that to some extent - and probably why some of them can become actors, they're doing very similar things

    The secret to comedy is surprise. Falling down: surprise. Miscommunication: surprise. Inappropriate response: surprise. That’s why rape jokes are funny. The more inappropriate a topic, the more surprising it is when someone talks about it. It’s also why jokes aren’t funny a second time: no surprise. Now you have no excuse. Go forth and be funny.

  • @ankitgoel3123
    @ankitgoel3123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    TL;DW
    1. Pause at the end. People need time to get a joke. Also, over talking reveals desperation/nervousness and kills jokes. Only speak as much is necessary, then pause to breathe while the audience 'gets' the joke and laughs.
    2. Build on your jokes. Sometimes jokes don't work because we abandon them prematurely. Combine this with the first point. Give the premise, say the punchline. Pause to breathe, then crack the second punchline. Louis CK generally throws three punchlines for every joke he cracks.
    3. Live your joke. When telling a funny story, pretend you are living through that story again. Combine this with the second point. Every punch line can be you going deeper into your story and revealing something else.

    From this and your other videos, I'm starting to notice a pattern among comedians. Your Robin Williams' breakdown shows how he committed to his jokes (Acting them out) while the Conan O'Brien video on how to be witty reveals the doubling down technique (Adding on to his jokes). Personally, through experimenting with both of these ideas I can say they're really effective. Nice breakdown, +charisma on command ;)

    I really liked stand ups of *Wendy Liebman* (one of the comedians Amy Shumer stole jokes from). They were so good and got so many laughs. Her style was unique and refreshing. However when she made a comeback in America's (?) Got Talent. A lot of her jokes fell flat. There wasn't much response.
    I would love it if you did an *analysis* comparing her new standups with the old ones. and why the new ones don't work well even when she uses jokes that have worked before.

    Your analysis is probably 10 % of his success at being funny the other 90% is that they're real stories that we can relate to and he tells them with the right amount of words without intentionally trying to be funny ... and his real stories were so real and truthful that it did him in.... I miss you Louie

    Can you do a video about the rise and fall from power using characters from TV and film like Walter White from Breaking Bad, Scarface, Avon Barksdale from The Wire etc. Like why different people want it, how thet got it. Do's and don'ts and why they fall.

    I've been watching tons of your videos since yesterday, relating to them, rather than learning from them. All of the things you mention are things I do consciously already, on purpose, to achieve an end goal. My mindset and mood never really changes, and I adapt my behavior to my situation in a way that allows me to come out with my intended result every time.
    ...Am I a sociopath?

    The nerdwriter1 emphasized more on the "premise" method that louis c.k. focused on, which is like he said, staying in the bit when he quoted chris rock, charisma on command on the other hand which i really like in this video is that he expanded more than just about staying in the bit..gosh i love these 2 channels

    There's another good tip from Louis. Sometimes you'll have a story and you'll want to repeat it several times, but after a few times you'll be so used to the story you yourself won't find it funny or as louie puts it "the bit starts to rot". Acting as you're reacting to the joke as if you're telling it for the first time is very difficult, so retell the same story as if you're telling it for the first time. That's when Jimmy Fallon Barbra Streisand Gordon Ramsey

  • @timflatus

    The rule of three is so strong, you should only break it if you have really good reason and even then sometimes better to start over to include the extra point. Timing is important, Ive seen a lot of performers just leave too many pauses and labour their jokes too, which also kills it. You want to follow your audience's breathing and cut back in just before they catch their breath.

    As a young comedian myself I appreciate this. Usually people don't want to break down jokes or explain why someone's funny. The old "if you have to break it down it's not really funny" idea. I know this is for applying things to your real life, but it might be helpful for anyone who does stand up.

    • @steampunkthing2716
      @steampunkthing2716 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      He's not charismatic though. In fact, he comes off as a bit of a jerk in interviews. We take the Eminem that we know in his music, and project it onto the boring, almost rude one we see in interviews. There's nothing special about his personality.

    • @theamhway
      @theamhway 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Xander Pizza Bagels he is never rude... What are you even talking about?

    • @steampunkthing2716
      @steampunkthing2716 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'd beg to differ. He tries to keep up his gangster attitude, which comes off as a bit forced and unlikable in interviews. There's a reason why people like Ed Sheeran who hasn't sold as many records is on interviews like the late shows more often then Eminem.

      Xander Pizza Bagels I think you have the wrong impression... You should watch more of his interviews.. The reason he's not as much on tv is probably because he spends a lot of time with his family maybe .. Also, he is immensely talented and has an excellent attitude and that constitutes his PERSONALITY/charisma.
