Now that you mention it, I can kinda imagine Birdo being either a nickname for her or a surname. Catherine Birdo. Kinda rolls off the tongue nicely.

Yes, they were. Famicom games were still being made as late as 1994 (eg Takahashi Meijin no Bōken Jima IV) and Nintendo thought it was hurting sales for the Super Famicom and the gameboy. They started treating it as a competitor and did so until the N64 came out (which was advanced enough to make its superiority over the famicom obvious)

Who made that Birdo puppet in the Super Mario USA commercial? I’m not sure if it was made by the Jim Henson company or not but I’m pretty sure it’s made by the same people who made the Revolting Slob puppet for the HBO show, Crashbox.

swear words don't work the same way in japanese as they do in english. They're not considered insulting to say unlike in english.
@@Super_Suchi Actually in this case it is insulting because it's hetakuso (へたくそ), which means "shitty" or "unskiled". Link is basically saying the player has poor skills as is Mario.
