Just imagine some of these commercials in the style of Illumination Studios animation. If the Super Mario Bros. Movie is successful enough to guarantee a sequel, I hope Wario shows up in it, and if the sequel is also successful, I hope it guarantees a Wario Land spin-off/solo film. Honestly, I see some big potential in an animated Mario cinematic universe with many different stories centering around different characters from the Mario universe. You can have the Mario movies, and then later we can have animated movies based on Wario Land, Donkey Kong Country, Yoshi's Island, or Luigi's Mansion, etc. I can see something like this working pretty well.
I will never understand why Nintendo felt the need to shoe-horn Wario in to a Bomberman game. It's not like the character was completely unknown, even in the mid-1990s.
It's just a one time crossover between Nintendo and Hudson. Nothing wrong with that, Battletoads and Double Dragon did the same thing as well as Tetris and Dr. Mario too. It didn't take too long until Capcom start doing it with Street Fighter and Marvel.

So I think from what I've gathered, there is, in fact, an origin story here. One might think that the timeline here starts with Super Mario Land 2, but instead it starts with Wario Blast. Wario is the counterpart to Mario but he comes from the Apocalyptic realm of the Third Dimension, which is being dismantled and destroyed and defiled by bipedal robots. These virtual boys have overrun Wario's home, turning it into a burning, blood-red extinction-level hellscape. Wario has therefore tried to escape, but he has to then make it through all the rubble. He Bombermans his way through until he's able to get to the events of Wario Land on Virtual Boy, where in the best ending he escapes on a flying carpet with a playboy model, a ton of cash, and makes it to the world we see him in now. From there, he's in Super Mario Land 2, trying to find somewhere to live and stumbles upon Mario's Castle in Marioland. After being violently kicked out, Wario believes Mario to be the fake of himself, and therefore Wario begins a journey all on his own, starting from Super Mario Land 3 onwards until Wario Land 4, where he finally feels justified, given his own identity, after meeting with Princess Shokora. After this point, he begins the Path of Ws, but until then lives in a gigantic Wario Castle, one he likely acquired in Wario Land 2 or 3. Wario World happens at this point, and we can assume he gets not quite the worst ending, but not the best, and has to endure the trials of the Shake Dimension to get anything to pay rent with in his new apartment. He gets to a point where he can actually be kinda comfy and cozy for a while, but in order to still live on his own and afford food, rent, etc., he goes into game development, now donning his famed Biker Wario getup. That's basically where things stay for the time being.
That's a pretty cool headcanon. One small issue, however... We see Baby Wario in Yoshi's Island DS, implying that he would have been born in the Mario Universe rather than the Third Dimension. Still a pretty cool idea for Wario's character.
