Might be of interest to viewers: Most of the Vietnamese diaspora abroad speak the Southern Vietnam dialect, as these were the bulk of political refugees after the wars. This guy learned the Northern Vietnamese dialect, which can be hard even for natives to understand sometimes.
Sure, I'll clarify. Folks understand formal Northern, but no one in these videos are newscasters or movie stars. People from the Hải Phòng countryside don't sound like that, it's like the difference between a Hugh Grant character and a Peaky Blinders character. And the dude's got a Polish-Northern Vietnamese accent. Fascinating, right? But it took a double take to even understand what I was hearing was Vietnamese because I rarely hear anything other than Southern Vietnamese where I've lived.
I'm Vietnamese and I can confirm that the North and South of Vietnam are very different in culture, lifestyle and personality. Southerners have softer accents and they rarely use local languages or slang to talk to each other. Southerners are friendlier and more honest than Northerners
I am Vietnamese and I think the reason she does not understand is not that he is speaking in a Northern accent, but he is simply mispronouncing every word. Listen to his "tốt nhất" for example, he pronounced it as "tột nhật". It is not the northern accent at all.
She was confused. Because although your vietnamese is better than someone who doesnt speak the language, it is not like the locals and some pronounciations and usage are wrong. Hence she wanted you to speak english. But keep trying! You will get there soon with your current foundation
@@arogueburritono, there is still a distinct accent mixed with his Vietnamese. if you are not a native, mastering Vietnamese pronunciation is NOTORIOUSLY difficult. The only thing she understood was "the best" I think she understands some words, probably even a lot of words, but she's not fluent, and preferred to speak English, hence why she asked him to speak English after looking completely confused😂

Amazing how languages bring people together, being iranian living in Australia, when I see an Afghan person, once we switch to Persian/Farsi/Dari, it’s like we brought up in a same household like siblings. She wanted you to speak English for one fact. You spoke Vietnamese with the wrong tonal marks, so the accent sounded off putting making it hard to understand what you were trying to say. I'm vietnamese and I had a hard time hearing what you were saying if it weren't for the subtitle. It's kinda like southern viets having a hard time understanding viets who speak with the Huế accent.
I was laughing so hard at the fact you can see three stages of confusion on her face when he started speaking in Vietnamese. 😂 I love how the bottle of sauce blocked her face in the proper intervals to make her expressions more dramatic, some screenwriter needs to take notes.
It's because his accent is still a bit incorrect, that's why it's difficult for her to understand. I speak Vietnamese fluent and I had to try to understand him..
