There are a few inaccuracies, primarily in the equipment loadout.
    1. No soldier in their right mind would only take one canteen into the desert. It was always two, and if you carried an E-Tool it was in-between both canteens on the back of the belt.
    -
    2. You are missing an M9 bayonet. A grand majority of soldiers would wear them on the left hip, behind the magazine pouch and in front of the canteen.
    -
    3. You would obviously need an M17A2 gasmask in the bag. You have the bag so just filling it with socks or some other kind of fabric to make it look full would do the trick. Same with your magazine pouches. Without any depth, they kinda just sit flat on your body. (This isn't an "inaccuracy," per-see, but it is certainly a tip to look more realistic. I do this with my magazine pouches as I don't need to reload my rifle at living history events.)
    -
    4. You need rank badges, unit SSI, an American flag (for certain units) and name-tape. (for name tape, I use a pseudonym so that people who take pictures of me at events don't have my real name).
    -
    5. A PASGT flak vest is a worthy investment if you really want to get that Desert Storm look. Both "chocolate chip" and Woodland M81 versions work because of the low availability of desert equipment during the invasion.
    -
I am the commanding officer of the 7th ID group, portraying Operation Just Cause, and I'm telling you these things because the differences between Woodland soldiers in Panama and soldiers in Desert Storm were pretty minimal, omit the camouflage differences. I know you're primarily a WWII reenactor so this is hopefully going to help you get that polished look.

Nice video man! I have a little information that you might find interesting. Your suspenders and pistol belt seem to be the LC-2 version of the ALICE gear. The LC-1 version being the first pattern, which closely resembled the typical M-1956 gear the US carried in Vietnam. LC-2 is when they mixed it up a bit both construction and color wise. LC-1 suspenders were an OD'ish green, H shape, whereas with LC-2 they decided to move to a darker khaki color, Y shape (I'm not sure why the Y shape, my guess is a better fit with a PASGT vest). Your pistol belt is the LC-2 Quick Release version. I believe all LC-2 belts were of the QR variety and stayed OD green. Reissued Vietnam war gear was super common in Desert Storm. Some guys even had full M-1956 kits still, where quite commonly a few pieces, like the 56/61 buttpacks, canvas first aid pouches, 56 H suspenders, you name it were carried over. Unfortunately I dont know enough about the ammo pouches. They are correct I just don't know the differences between the LC-1 and LC-2 offhand. Looking at my ALICE stuff, I'm just gonna assume they just changed the color. Expect lots of overlap in the colors with the ALICE stuff in general. Super good start man!

Web belt with H-harness. ALICE was the pack. I wore jungle boots in DS so you got that good, no one I know had problems with sand in their jungle boots. What you call a first aid pouch is actually a compass pouch, the first aid kit was a square package that went on the back of your war belt (web belt).

Figured I’d chime in in the canteen bit, it is original to have the metal cup, however it’s a different design, much more common too. Difference being the WWII canteen cups have a different style of handle, with the sliding bar (don’t know the term) whereas the post war ones have two bits of metal that wrap around the cup and unfold and form a handle. Sorry I don’t know proper terms on these, just speaking from items in my collection.

    You should do Vietnam impression

  • @WWIIman1942
    @WWIIman1942 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Not a bad start, especially for someone who primarily does WWII. I would recommend removing the e-tool and adding another canteen. I think we've all seen those LC-1 gear diagrams that show an e-tool on the belt. The e-tool was almost always attached to the ALICE rucksack. They were unnecessary to keep on the combat LBE (load bearing equipment (suspenders, belt, mag pouches, bandage pouch, etc.)). Hydration was crucial and stressed highly during Operation Desert Shield/Storm, so the majority of front line soldiers carried two canteens on their belts. At least one should have an NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) cap that mates with the the drinking tube on the M17A1 and A2 gas masks. If you plan on keeping the train rolling with this impression, I recommend buying a PASGT vest. The majority, if not, all front line soldiers wore them as they were the most vulnerable to enemy contact and explosions. You shouldn't need any covers for the vest (the vest comes in the M81 Woodland camouflage pattern and covers in 6-color desert camouflage, and later, 3-color desert camouflage were offered) either as most guys opted to not put them on. I know you've heard this from other commenters, but the top button on the DBDU shirt stays undone. There now you've heard it one more time haha. One last thing, you should look into basing it off of a specific unit. At this time, like in almost all other eras, issuing of some pieces of gear, and they way it was worn, often varied by unit. Its one of the best things you can do to make an impression accurate. Otherwise, this is an excellent start. Great job! Welcome to the Gulf War side of the hobby!

Just so you know. That was in a time when night vision goggles was not affordable enough to provide to the masses. So staying hidden at night was key. You could see the cat eyes at a short distance with just star light to see friendlies. The shovel was known as an E-Tool and typically wouldn't be worn unless you were in a weird situation where you might need a shitty short shovel. The gas mask carrier can be worn in any of three positions. The position you showed was the most popular as it kept it low and out of the way. The medical pouch was always upside down so the pressure dressing was easier to remove in a hurry. The plastic could also be used to cover a sucking chest wound. The red cover was required as the red light could only be seen for a few hundred feet away while a white light could be seen at around 10 times as far away. Use the red light at night while in pure darkness to do everything in your house for one week and you will learn to appreciate white light. During this period we worked at night with zero light to keep our actions undetected. You should research "black out drive" to learn more. The helmet was made of Kevlar. Overall you did a great job, thank you for producing.

The band is called cat eyes band, the lamp isn’t exactly 100% correct, they had ones with the guards on the side of the switch. Also brown shirts are standard with woodland and dessert. The system is called LC-2 and the clips are called slide keepers. The E-tool(shovel) doesn’t go on the belt, it goes on the rucksack
