If the rhythm of the Railroad doesn't move you---you don't have a pulse! In the words of Eddie Van Halen--"when the Funk took the stage, they OWNED your ass!"

Grand Funk Railroad is a take off from Grand Trunk Railroad which use to run through the area of Michigan where the bands three original members originated.

This was a 1966 song by The Animals and covered by Grand Funk Railroad in 1969. The original version did not have the Marijuana references.

Given that was reportedly a local TV station in Pennsylvania that aired Grand Funk Railroad live in 1969 that was some remarkable live editing.

They were only 20-years-old! This was their first year together, too. Lead guitarist and singer Mark Farner was "relearning the guitar," which he hadn't played in a year-and-a-half. And he only learned how to play at age 15. And get a load of this: He's still performing! Don Brewer on drums also sang lead sometimes. Within three years, this garage band sold out Shea Stadium in seven days. It had taken the Beatles seven weeks to sell out a few years earlier! They were a shooting star, for sure, and broke up in 1976.
The next year, Mark Farner woke up and wrote "I'm your Captain" during the height of Vietnam. Here's their legendary performance at Shea Stadium in 1971: th-cam.com/video/A_t59To7Snk/w-d-xo.html

"I'm Your Captain" added to our Master Request List. Thank you! - JD

GFR sold out the stadium in 72 hours, not seven days.

This is “Rich”. This is actually a cover of the old Eric Burden and the Animals song. The “funk” in their name comes from the namesake the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. This band “literally” changed my life.

Richard, I believe this recording was from a small studio in Hershey, PA. I think it may have been a radio station. In any case, it’s one of the best live recordings ever IMHO. Mark Farner is my favorite front man. I met him twice after concerts several years ago. A really nice guy.

I stand corrected. It was a TV show from Hershey, PA

Also Grand Funk split up in the late 90s when drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher took a dump on lead singer and front man extraordinaire Mark Farner kicking him out of the band.

I saw Grand Funk (without Farner) twice since then. So, technically, they are not broke up, they are just out with a different (and pretty good) singer. - John

@@LiteralistReactions Dare I say you never saw "Grand Funk" actually. Farner is the soul.

That's right....all he saw was a cover band. Here's some trivia for you: don brewer is such an ass, even his first wife committed suicide

Funk refers to the band! A bass, drums, and guitar is considered a funk band!
