You sir will probably NEVER experience severe memory loss as you age. By recalling all of your childhood memories like that, you're also exercising your brain the entire time. It's amazing!
Great memories brought back from your video. Grew up in the Valley. First in Sherman Oaks on Greenleaf Street. I went to Sherman Oaks Elementary. Then we moved to Peach Avenue where my brother and I attended Selma Elementay. And then moved to Lemona Avenue right across from Van Nuys High School, where we went to Robert Fulton Jr. High and Van Nuys High School, respectfully, all in the span of about 20 years. Val Surf actually had three locations on that same corner. The second one was on the NW corner in a strip mall. Happy to say I bought many things at all three. The Richards brothers were great people and I skated with their team a bit through the years. Well, my mom bought us lots of goodies from the first two. Great childhood memories into adolescence, and young adulthood. Cruising nights on Wednesdays were incredible. We had our own skateboard spot at Bank of America. Thank you for the cool video.
Wow..My time on the Blvd was 1962-1965. Some great memories. Including getting my cherry popped one block off Van Nuys Blvd in the back seat of my 1957 Chevy. I will never forget that moment as The 4 Seasons hit song played on my car radio, "Oh What a Night". And what a night it was. Thanks for the memories. Memories like that are priceless at my age.

Thank you for showing the Farrell's location. Fond -- beyond fond -- cherished memories of Ferrell's Van Nuys Blvd. It was like a little slice of Disneyland, away from Disneyland -- literally. Sad to hear of Four and 20, gone. Thank you, also, for your awesome Memories of San Fernando Valley Series. Beautiful recounting of histories, experiences and how these invaluable places and experiences helped shape our lives. Much loved locations.
Binge watching them all! This has to be the best video series of the Valley that I have ever seen! Your not only bringing up old memories, but showing me stuff even before our time, brilliant! Paid many tickets at that court!
Thank you so much for your channel, I raised my son in the valley back in the 80's and 90s, ALL what you are showing was SO much a part of our lives, good memories..!💯👍
OMG! I had even worked at that Tommies. They had had the best Chili Fries in the Valley. Dude! This Is such a De Ja Vue moment for me. I was born and raised most of my life in the San Fernando Valley. Have not been back the In years, Thank you again. I would almost bet that our path's had crossed a couple times in the past.
I used to live in an apartment on the corner of Oxnard and Whitsett , right behind the Dales Jr. My best friend lived further down Whitsett across from the golf & tennis center near Ventura. Back in the late 90's early 2000's . Great memories
Dude, you are writing history! Think about it, people are going to be able to watch your videos many, many years from now, even after you're long gone off this planet. It's truly important work you're doing, especially how you tell the lesser known stories. For instance, about the dog park where they had the carnivals, and things like that. It really paints a picture and conveys the culture during the times you were a child, teenager...and now as an adult. Love the older pictures and vintage footage you also include. Great job, all very clever and interesting. Thank you so much for your awesome work! You clearly enjoy doing it which makes it even more fun to watch. 👏💫
Born and raised in the SFV (late '50's and most of the '60's (had a war to fight).) Great memories. Thank you very much. You made my day in more ways than I can say. I do remember almost all of the places you have shown in this video. I lived only a few blocks away. Cruising VN Blvd in the mid '60's., on a Friday nigh, was great. Again, thanks.
That is the correct location for Farrells where the sizzler restaurant still stands. I remember my parents taking my brother and I there in the 80’s. It was so much fun. I have lived in the the valley since 1980. 😎♥️
9:10 remember going in there to fill out the ad forms...The trick with the Recycler was getting as fast as you could on Thursday. that way you have first dibs on all the good stuff for sale. That office was the first of the first places to get it.
The Ralph's was a Hughes Market back in the 70s and 80s. They used to cruise to Sherman Way. Corky's use to be The Lamplighter. Any interest in newsstands? Use to be 1 at Victory and Van Nuys and Ventura and Van Nuys Blvds

Great video, great channel. I grew up in Glendale and went to Glendale High School. I had heard about Van Nuys Bl. and the Cruise Nights when I was in 10th. grade. My 1st. car was a 1959 Bug and I got it for my 16th B-day. A lot of work and a 2110cc engine, one Saturday night I felt like being bad so off to The Blvd I went. I was amazed and awe struck. After making some new friends with VW's and a year later We were the "V-Dubs of So. Cal.". We would go to Malibu Grand Prix, the Slider Go-Kart track next door and we even saw Fast Times at Ridgemont High at the Winnetka Drive In about 15 times in the Summer of 1983. GOOD TIMES. Thanks for this video, You brought back a lot of great memories for Me!!!
I was a San Gabriel Valley kid but I remember Sizzler and Toys R Us. But I used to live at 4920 Van nuys blvd across the street from Sherman Oaks Hospital ..
Once again, I remember a lot of these places. I love watching your videos but with so many places being torn down it kind of is depressing for me. But on the other hand it brings back my teenage years.
Great video!! Corvette summer is also another movie to feature Van Nuys Blvd cruising. In the movie, the car was stolen at the Tommy's across the street from the Surplus Store on Delano and Van Nuys. Tommy's is long gone. Now the Van Nuys State Office Building sits in its place. Keep em' coming!!!!

Thanks for making this fun video. I used to cruise Van Nuys blvd from 1978 to 1981. As I recall, most of the action took place between Victory blvd and Sherman Way. Lots of great memories.
I was allowed to be cashier at the carnival that set up at Vanowen and Lindly. Too young to work the rides. In carnival lingo that was called "bucking tub".
I celebrated my ninth birthday at the Farrell's in Van Nuys and would get Ice cream and Candy at the Farrell's next to the old Pepper tree Theater. I used to go to Sherman Oaks castle to play the arcades from 1993-1999. I would ditch school from Van Nuys Middle School with around 5 of my classmates right around 9:00am. We did it a couple of times carrying about 6-7 dollars each. Good times. Rubin Reds Hot I remember that place.
I remember being a skater in the 90s and wearing the baggy jeans like the New Deal and Counterfeit brand and slapping shoe goo on the ollie wall of your lead foot.
I grew up in the valley and still live in the valley going to Farrell's was a big thing for me as a kid especially the location at Canoga and Ventura. Love the channel bro ! Been out here in Vegas for the past 20 years - i’m able to walk down memory lane with you and my family as you travel through the neighborhood(s) thankful for what you are doing
My friends and I used to cruise Van Nuys in the early 80s. I met my ex-wife at McDonalds on Van Nuys Bl just past Sherman Way. If only I could go back in time...
Watching these videos and listening to you talk of your parents growing up, it sounds like they were very supportive of your interests--that's always a good thing.
I went to Van Nuys High School in the mid-60s and on the way home would stop at a car dealership, I think it was Keyes, that carried Studebaker and would stare at the Avanti sports car that they made. Is Hamburger Hamlet on Van Nuys near Ventura Blvd still going? The Casa de Cadillac dealership on Ventura near Beverly Glen was a beautiful building with beautiful cars in it.
i lived 3 houses down on whiteoak from that corner house late 80s...yes the carnvials were rad....lots of dust...but we had a pool to jump in in the summer....i used to sell cars in front of my house .
You are correct, 7131 is the location for Farrells. Very distinctive because it was between Van Nuys and Sherman Circle. The first home I owned was in Reseda with the same floor plan as your Duncan house.
Great video! Many great memories, I remember Val Surf. I worked for Ernie Tanaka in his surfboard shop on Van Nuys Blvd. Just north of Riverside Dr. I was 11 or 12 at the time. That job was so cool. Maybe some remember Matt & Tony's subs on Victory across from Victory Drive In ? Soooo good! I've still got there business card with menu on the back, prices range from $.85 whole sub to $.65 for a half. 👍
From 1980 - 1990 I used to go into that Val Surf. It was across Whitsett from it's current location in the plaza with the bar (the Fifth). It must have moved from the original spot near Burritos El Chavo to the spot across Whitsett, to the spot its in now. We lived in the apartments on the same block off Rhodes Ave. I saw a mini ramp demo in 1987 (I was in 6th grade or 7th grade) in the Val Surf parking lot across from it's current location. Frankie Hill was skating and they were playing Bad Brains I Against I for the whole demo. It was cool.
Wow, that's crazy I lived on Duncan Street in the 60's and knew the family that lived in your old house. My friends and I would play in that very cul-de-sac off Yarmouth. Cruised Van Nuys Bl. In the early 70's, the valley in that time was a great place to grow up.
Remember that Farrells in 70's. After Hollywood High Friday night football games, those who were at the game would go to Farrells. Our biggest rivals in 1970's was North Hollywood High. Their school was not that far from Farrells. I remember cruising Van Nuys. If you had a fast car or hot rod, you would cruise Van Nuys. An occasional low riders would cruise it. Most of the low riders cruised Whitter Blvd. Everybody cruised Hollywood Blvd. I don't live in LA anymore. Is Van Nuys Blvd a place to cruise? Love these video.
Any 80’s OG club kids out there that went to both Phases and Hot Trax? Hot Trax was on Van Nuys Blvd. Most of the teenage hooligans those days went to both (don’t ask me how I know 🤣); until Hot Trax had a shooting outside and closed down I think around 1987. Dance clubs and weekly house parties were the epitome of being a teenager in the Valley in the 80’s. Good times!!! Thanks so much for these videos!
To the left of Waadt Appliances was a liquor store. It’s name used to be Johnnie’s Valley Ho. That was my family’s store. I worked there in the early to mid 1960’s.
My grandparents bought a plot on Hazeltine and Sherman way back in '28. Built a house and raised a family, my mom and her sisters. Then WWII came and Papa had my mom and the girls run our electrical shop, Scott Electric on Van nuys bl. Where an adult lingerie/porn store sits today. I have some of the best photos of the van nuys area. An avocado tree was planted in the yard on the day I was born back in 64. And for 50 years, wherever I was i would make a trip to Grans House and fill 3 laundry baskets full and make holiday gift baskets full of the Cali green gold as we called em. I grew up there and in the SCV. I subscribed. A whole college course could be taught using your video series. Much love...doubt you will see this TOTALLY AWESOME POST!
I have family that still lives in the valley. When I visit I am going to be looking for a lot of these places that are in the "memories of the valley" collection now! Thanks for the memories man.
Also, the Movie Aloha Bobby and Rose used Van Nuys Blvd for filming, Paul Le Mat racing his red 68 Camaro. Plus the automotive shop he worked in, a restaurant, a car wash, and motel on Ventura blvd. Also showed up in that movie.
I grew up in Van Nuys for 7& 8 grade then to Reseda from 9th ~ 12th Go Regents !! Lived on Yarmouth just off Sherman Way and White Oak !!! Teen Center on Victory was the place to be !!
The Recycler was free on small racks at many stores. There was another one (maybe called the Yellow Sheet or something like that) but not as popular. Farrell's was on the west side of VN just south of Sherman Way. There used to be a street like a transition road behind it that curved off of eastbound Sherman Way to SB VN. That's been gone for some time. Old maps still show it. Worked at that Mobil station, SW corner of VN & B.
In the late 69s early 70s there would be up to 1500 cars on VNB on Wed night, club night. But they came from all over LA and not all at the same time. From Bob's to Oscars at Saticoy and back again. Many went down to June Ellen's as well. I became a legend on VNB as the guy who was hit from behind at 60 mph by a drunk at Kittridge and VN in front of Butler Bros. and was basically untouched. The police were trying to stop him at the time and they are the ones to "certify" his speed.
I surely remember The Recycler! A roommate of mine worked there, and an older lady called wanting to give her deceased husband's car away. He got the car, for free. I remember sitting in it, it was a 1961 Chrysler that was in great shape. There was also a Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor at the SW corner of Devonshire and Reseda, that I would go to. Zody's was in that same shopping center, as well. I used to call them "Zonkies" (in reference to getting a zonkie prize on "Let's Make a Deal" TV show with Monty Hall that was filmed at the NBC Studios at Pass Ave. and the 101 freeway in Burbank).
We still live behind what was Farrell's, now a Sizzlers, Van Nuys south of Sherman Way, used to go there after Poly football games in the 70's, meet my wife, (well, her sister, long story), there,...Wendsday nights was bumper to bumper from Sherman to Oxnard,... picking up girls, lowriders, surfers, bikers, all having a good time!
You mentioned the carnival ride called the Zipper, and you mentioned the Sizzler in a previous video. I saw those same rides at the annual Our Lady of Lourdes festival. I remember seeing the name "Guadagno and Sons" on the ride tickets.
I would make extra cash working for Craft's 20 Big Shows when the would set up around the Valley. I worked the joints and bucked tub. Especially the Roundup.
Does anyone remember Lee’s Bar Stools n Dinettes? Lots of commercials on tv. My mom and dad knew him and his wife very well. Pretty rich and they lived beachfront in Malibu! Lucky them!
Watching your videos I’m learning more and more that The Valley wasn’t all that different from a lot of places in the west. As a kid of the 80’s we had SoCal constantly shoved down our throats and thought it was THE place. Your experiences don’t sound all that different from mine and most dudes I grew up with. Of course no one made movies about where we lived and we didn’t have world class skateboarders on every block. But we cruised, had birthday parties at Farrell’s, hung out at the mall, bought tapes at Record Warehouse and partied in undisclosed locations. The more I watch your videos and hear your experiences, they sound a lot like mine and my friends who grew up in various cities and states. As a horror fan I would love to see location videos if Night of the Comet and They Live. Keep em coming!
I used to go to the steakhouse & bar "The Sherman Room" directly across the street from Waadt appliance ...bar tender was "Dan the Long Island Iced Tea Man" ...strongest drinks ever..out of a restuarant

Went to Valerio Street school elementary in the 80's then to Grenada elementary then Langdon elementary.
Across the casa de Cadillac was a burger joint that all the hippies hung out at Casa Burger....❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
Great Job and great memories! Thanks
i lived 3 houses down on whiteoak from that corner house late 80s...yes the carnvials were rad....lots of dust...but we had a pool to jump in in the summer....i used to sell cars in front of my house .
You are correct, 7131 is the location for Farrells. Very distinctive because it was between Van Nuys and Sherman Circle. The first home I owned was in Reseda with the same floor plan as your Duncan house.
Love the ‘80s!
Wow 1962 val surf love that.
Great story. I drive by that intersection almost everyday. Next time I go by there, I will remember. The Green gold 🥑 😀
I have family that still lives in the valley. When I visit I am going to be looking for a lot of these places that are in the "memories of the valley" collection now! Thanks for the memories man.
That's awesome. Thank you for the support
Farrells was on VN Blvd so of Sherman way across the street from Arby's ...also in 70s cruising was from Vanowen to Burbank Blvd
Great Video! 📼
Thank you
Also, the Movie Aloha Bobby and Rose used Van Nuys Blvd for filming, Paul Le Mat racing his red 68 Camaro. Plus the automotive shop he worked in, a restaurant, a car wash, and motel on Ventura blvd. Also showed up in that movie.
ye p have that movie
Farrells on Reseda in Northridge was a staple.
Do one on pacoima
I was born in van nuys in 84 remember some of this
I'm binge watching all of your channel!!! Born at the county hospital in L.A but grew in Pacoima and Van Nuys!!! Thanks for the memories bro!!
Awesome. I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos. Thank you!
my daughter too in 1983
What years did you live in Pacoima and VanNuys?
@@Trancymind I lived in Pacoima from 89- 94 and lived in Van Nuys from 94 to 98 off Murietta Ave! I live I'm texas now!! I LOVE L.A
@@jbizzletx3420 Wow that is cool. I lived in Pacoima from 1980-1987 and Van Nuys from 1990-1999.
Thanks for the memories
Awesome!! Thank you!! Great Part 9!! Now I’m craving Farrell’s 😂😂😂😂
🍦 Hubby and I looking forward to Part 10!!
I'm always craving ice cream. Ha
My mom lived on Burbank in Van Nuyes when she first came from Mexico, back in the early to mid 80s
I enjoy these vids, 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you!
I'm from the SouthBay and I remember Keys Keys Keys Keys on Van Nuys lol The Recycler and The Penny Saver . I love the SFV vlogs
I grew up in Van Nuys for 7& 8 grade then to Reseda from 9th ~ 12th Go Regents !! Lived on Yarmouth just off Sherman Way and White Oak !!! Teen Center on Victory was the place to be !!
There was a Sizzlers two doors down from Watt appliance store.. Now it is a hospice care place.
Yep, I remember it
Yep I remember that carnival as a kid
Awesome. I wonder if we were ever there at the same time
Man brother maybe
I had my birthday party there at Farrell's on Canoga!
a tour with an actual local i love it
Thank you!!
There was a Farrel's in Rosemead in San Gabriel Valley. Many memories.
You should do Boulevard Nights filming locations that would be awesome
Movies outstanding
Definitely on the list
The movie Boogie Nights was filmed in the valley as well. I recognized St Catherines and Loves restaurant.
That is so dope!! Long time SFV residents! 818 we in here 🔥 🔥 🔥
Thank you for watching
In the late 69s early 70s there would be up to 1500 cars on VNB on Wed night, club night. But they came from all over LA and not all at the same time. From Bob's to Oscars at Saticoy and back again. Many went down to June Ellen's as well. I became a legend on VNB as the guy who was hit from behind at 60 mph by a drunk at Kittridge and VN in front of Butler Bros. and was basically untouched. The police were trying to stop him at the time and they are the ones to "certify" his speed.
Wow that's crazy. thank you for sharing these stories with us
That Corky's on Van Nuys also went under the name Lamplighter. I saw some live music there.
Wow. A free car. I wonder what other cool stuff they came across.
ALWAYS COOL TO WATCH!!! COME ON PART 10
Thank you. It's coming
100 percent correct on Farrell’s Van Nuys Blvd. Sizzler went in after Farrell’s left and has been there ever since. Exact same building.
used to hang out on VN blvd in the 70's every night even though the biggest night was Wednesday
its sad what's happen to the valley all the crime and homeless. Late 80s & 90s was the one of the best times to live in the valley.
Metallica, Guns n Roses, and Motley Crue all started from ads in the Recycler
Isn't that crazy?
We still live behind what was Farrell's, now a Sizzlers, Van Nuys south of Sherman Way, used to go there after Poly football games in the 70's, meet my wife, (well, her sister, long story), there,...Wendsday nights was bumper to bumper from Sherman to Oxnard,... picking up girls, lowriders, surfers, bikers, all having a good time!
Man sizzler lol 🤣 I remember going too that location
Your recollection of the Recycler is spot on. I worked there.
Dude that area where you grew up in Reseda looks pretty nice. Must’ve been great skating outside and jamming.
talking about low budget tv commercials... how about Jack Stephan comercial?? remember it?
Absolutely. I talk about him and A Dee Do in one of my other videos
Makes perfect sense to me. Thank you so much for watching. And I got both of those on my list
I used to go to the steakhouse & bar "The Sherman Room" directly across the street from Waadt appliance ...bar tender was "Dan the Long Island Iced Tea Man" ...strongest drinks ever..out of a restuarant
The valley looks so nice .. compared to the inner city of Los Angeles..
Some parts of the valley these days are turning into inner city LA
I miss Hughes Market. Also on the zipper "minutes before I threw up." HAHAHA...classic.
It's true haha.
Hughes market is GONE????
@@vickiladu6755 Long gone. It's a Rslph's now. Several of the original owners of the chain tried to regroup at one point and opened Howes Market but they couldn't maintain.
That gated area you showed where you used to hang out was used in the beginning of the original 1978 Halloween 🎃
