As a conservative Christian, I have to agree with Bill's assessment. Ascribing a sort of divinity towards human beings is not biblical & its not what Christ taught.
Hi! As someone from a Soviet culture (now an immigrant in the USA) I believe that the resurrection was staged by the Romans, as explained in a popular book where I'm from - "The Gospel of Afranius"; like many others, I read it in childhood and never thought about this question again - until coming to the USA and noticing a stark contrast in the discussion of this question. What's wrong with that explanation?? I'm confused, what am I missing here?..
@@valinorean4816 My own reading is when the disciples lost their sect leader, the doubter Thomas comes by and they have this new guy they propped up as the "revived" Jesus, even though Thomas can't recognize him (because it isn't him). This explains a lot of the character differences post resurrection too. Of course it's always possible it never happened but I'm leaning more towards this.
@@valinorean4816 It's no surprise they got persuaded, as people in sects can be persuaded to a lot especially in a time where supernatural things were assumed to be everywhere. They were emotionally vulnerable after losing their leader, and someone appears claiming to be resurrected Christ but *doesn't look like him* what ells can you make of that than some opportunist seeing the leaderless sect of followers? After resurrection I I'll concede the changes to character, more authoritative for lack of a better description, can be chalked up to the new role as a divine. Though it doesn't contradict and melds well with the idea of some person just impersonating the dead sect leader to usurp his influence. Note that I'm not taking everything as truth and am assuming that bits and pieces are true while lots of it is just made up by the authors. I don't discount the entire thing being false too as telling the story about "Thomas the doubter" works well as a trick of persuasion. Shutting down doubters in advance by making them empathize with Thomas in the story as if the reader themselves have seen the proof rather than just seeing a *story* of someone who has seen proof. It's similar to a trick used by pyramid schemes in modern day, present a testimony by a 'doubting customer who was then convinced' makes it subconsciously feel as if anything you saw the evidence the doubter saw, yourself.

Where do you get that take on Christianity? Seriously, our Bible tells us you must die to self... deny yourself... give up your life... hate your own family... to live 'ever' in the Spirit (which means every minute of a human life). What in the world do you mean by 'extreme'? Christianity is extreme or nothing; (though I believe God never showed us to use politics to force Christianity by law. He is a God of free will. We do not create Christianity that way. Jesus rejected political power).
Thank you, Bill Maher. I am so glad to hear someone call out all of this ridiculuous religious bullshit. And not just Christian, thanks for stepping on the whole "karma" thing too. People need to grow up and learn to take responsibility for their own actions.
@@petesmitt "a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance": before making such claims, try simply googling the meaning of the word you're trying to explain. Bill summed it up best in the clip from his movie about the difference between being "Christ like" versus being "Christian", which- like all other religions, is simply a cult & as such inherently creates violent extremism, as Christianity has. It is an organization. It is increasingly political. It has spilled oceans of blood over millennia. It has caused millions to suffer who differ in any way from what the cultists have been made to believe by their cult leaders. Religion, like Christianity, is nothing more than a tool wielded by a few to control the many: nothing more. Being Christ like is simply living a simple, modest life honoring the basic code of morals & ethics allegedly promoted by the man the myth of Jesus is based on & any noteworthy, civilized society can agree on. For the record, Trump is not Christ like. As for his ear, he is lucky: nothing more.

Also, Bill’s statement about God protecting one person’s heroes but not another’s was right on the money; indulging in that kind of thinking is possibly the slipperiest slope you can walk, especially when so much is on the line.
It wasn't right on the money; Bill doesn't understand the Bible's narrative. Christ was crucified while Elijah was taken up on chariots of fire. Each person has their own story and their own path. There are religious kooks, to be sure, but understanding the Bible and its stories - even if you don't believe in God - clears up a lot of confusion surrounding these issues.
In Australia, we laugh at how they interpret the 'near-miss' of the bullet to holy intervention - you could just as easily say, "it was a warning from god to change track, or the next one will be between the eyes - heed the warning," but people interpret it how they want, good-old fashioned wishful thinking.

@@cchemmes-seeseeart3948 I agree with Bill about Religion... but not about a "Magic Man in the Sky" he likes to cite. While 3 of the world's large religions are based on the Bible, it is after all only a collection of ancient manuscripts and NOT a Religion. If you would strip away all of the Holy "Mumbo Jumbo" the book actually makes a lot of sense and is in reality very logical when looked at with 21st century eyes and understanding... not superstitious and ignorant medieval eyes. The answers are in the Bible if you just read it as a simple story told to primitive Man. The question about the existence of what we've been calling a Creator God has to start with "Is there other intelligent Life in the Universe"? I would venture to say "Yes, most certainly!". WE are floating around "Out There" in a world that is an anomaly as far as we can see. As an analogy IF you see one rat, you can be sure there are many more you don't see. That's very logical. And if so, can they be much, much, more advanced than us? Also, YES! They could be a very old and very advance Super Power much like the USA compared to a primitive tribe running around naked in the jungle. My guess is that what we call God is not Supernatural or Magical... but a very, very, advanced Technological Race! The first book of the Bible (Genesis) states that God is not of this planet and that He came here from "Out There" and terraformed a watery and dark planet to hold Life that He (they) created... just as our current Scientists hope to do on another Lifeless planet much in the same way as Genesis describes in the Bible. Of course it wasn't done in 6 "Days" as we know them, but rather in 6 Stages, Epochs, or Ages that could have taken a very long, long time. After it was all set in motion the Life forms that God created culminated in the creation of Man and then an altered companion for him called Woman (womb man?) to take care of it. It should be obvious now that we didn't do that and are actually busily killing it (our Home) in our Hubristic arrogance. Because of our treacherous nature and disobedience God basically left us on own own and said He would be back one day (the Biblical Harvest at the end of this Age) to get rid of the worst of us and keep the best of us! As Herbert Armstrong of the "Worldwide Church of God" once put it... God is growing his "Sons" (children) down here and has an abode somewhere else in Space that we call Heaven! Like Earth, but a place of even greater Beauty, Peace and Love rather than Decay, War and Hate. This all sounds very logical to me as sort of climbing the Evolutionary Ladder... whether people believe it to be true - or not. IMO... Aliens are mentioned in the Bible. The good ones were called Angels (Messengers and Protectors of God and His Creation) and the bad ones were called Demons (Gods Opposers and His Creation's Destroyers). They were depicted with wings because they had the ability of flight when man didn't. When God said: "You shall have no other Gods before Me" it was a stern warning about the bad Aliens... or in other words: "The Fallen Angels" spoken about in the Book of Enoch that left their abode in the Heavens to come down here to infect the Human Race! That explains a lot of things... Just my 2 cents worth... ;-)

Except for Jesus of course and other sons of god described in the Old Testament.
@@valinorean4816 My own reading is when the disciples lost their sect leader, the doubter Thomas comes by and they have this new guy they propped up as the "revived" Jesus, even though Thomas can't recognize him (because it isn't him).

Of course it's always possible it never happened but I'm leaning more towards this.
@@cyberneticbutterfly8506 But he got persuaded? And so were they? - also, what do you mean by character differences? such as what?

I find this problem a 100 times worse here where I'm from, Israel. A vary large amount of those who vote for Benjamin Netanyahu genuinely think of him as some demi god. No matter what he says, does or happens they view him as king (Bibi the king and such are very common rally cries). Problem is made a thousand times worse that he is the president which under his lead our country is OBJECTIVELY in its worst state ever, by far, and it's not getting any better.
Genuine question from an ignorant American. I know that Jewish families are some of the biggest and closest families on the planet. That being said. I have been a life long Republican in Georgia but I am not MAGA, I created a stink at the 2023 GOP state convention when I walked out on DJT's speech in Columbus. BTW I did it this year when MTG was giving her speech. I really do like your politics as of late, I do not agree with you on a number of issues, but so what. that is the beauty of our Republic. Sadly we can not even delve into that in most circumstances but I do think it would be a blast with you. Oh and yes I agree with you on the Hamas issues and Palestine issues. Ironically, my undergrad education (BS in History) in the history of Islam and the middle east, I also got a Poly Sci BA with an emphasis in the same area and in Con Law along with a minor in international studies but I ended up getting a JD due to my wife at the time and my parents. This was back in the 1980s when a degree actually meant something. and I wanted to work for the government at the time with regards to the middle east (I wrote a well received paper on political Islam at the time since I knew the USSR was collapsing and political Islam was going to define our policy after the late 1980s) But circumstances led me to Law School. You actually are rather good with you logic, from my point of view, even though I do disagree with you on a number of issues.....but then again, so what, you are capable of actually defending your positions reasonably without delving into emotions. None of it, in itself, is logic. (Yes, Christianity gives logic to it; I am speaking regarding your anti religion position). Thus, your point/??
BIBLE-
Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth
Just my 2 cents worth... ;-)
@@MrJameslascko Here is my take: I was abused as a child, by many different types of abuse, & raised in dysfunction, which became my socialization. It led to massive struggles in my adult life. When I tried to get 'help' from 'the' system, I was only severely harmed, with problems growing, that ultimately led to quitting church. This was all despite having become a Christian as a teen, & such a strong heart of faith, I initially studied ministry in college (then science). I ended up in a faith struggle, & faith won in my life, only because of miracles, not ministry of people or my own reasoning. One miracle, for example, came from praying that I felt failed/ harmed in healing therapy, which led to trouble. After prayer about this, I read a daily Bible devotion/ life application Word, & it was EXACTLY about a woman FAILED IN THERAPY, but then God helping & healing her! MY EXACT prayer! I've seen a gazillion such stunning, miraculous answers to prayer. So my faith is real, living, life saving, my whole life (even my art career goal came from a prayer/ calling). @@CraftyF0X Read 1 Corinthians chapter 15 in the Bible, which makes it clear that death is the ultimate enemy of God. God doesn't have anything to do with making death happen. I don't know who you talk to, but it is people in error. God NEVER causes death; that is an oxymoron against faith, since the whole reason Jesus died on the cross was to overcome death. I received a miracle answer to prayer about this one day, as well, when a family member died. I had previously believed a Word about being saved at the last minute. It didn't seem to happen. I didn't understand. So I prayed for wisdom. The Bible passage then was "I will redeem them from the grave." Jesus is snatching people out of eternal death at the moment they die; & is never the cause of death. He has no heart to impose or wish death. He is the bright light in the tunnel people see at death, that overcomes evil & turns it to good. The fact is, we are all here on earth temporarily, for spiritual purposes. @@gdiwolverinemale4th There's no need to tell the difference. Neither is real.
@@CrazyLife2112 Do you claim you understand Quantum Mechanics? Or did you climb Mt Sinai to make sure He does not exist?
And of course, you know for sure , which is which! Nobody knows!

Did you climb Mt Sinai to make sure he exists? Have pictures?
The dog's ass Jesus is legendary
That pancake looks like the press photo of Charles Manson looking down while being arrested.
@@captainwonderbar1657 Spot on.
It does! I think that was Happy Charlie's thing though - playing the messiah.
More like Hunter Bribedumb..🤡
I thought that too!😅
another vicious lib
This might have been the funniest New Rule ever. Fantastically worded.
I am a practicing Catholic, my own style, mostly ignore the clergy and I couldn't agree more, "nothing can't be made just a little worse by adding religion." When I grew up religion was a private matter, should have stayed that way. Can't stomach anyone who throws in their self-religion. They are the idiots among us.
Then you are not Catholic. The Church has a hierarchy founded by Jesus Christ! When he built a church on Petra, which the gates of hell will not prevail against! He gave him the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, not the other apostles, not me or you! The Pope as the successor of St. Peter has that authority, just as bishops have the fullness of the holy order, as successors of the apostles, by the laying on of hands, as apostles when they choose new ones! So that is the teaching of Christ. I guess we know which heresies the Church has proclaimed in the last couple of hundred years! So are dogmas that are immutable Truths of faith! So you could broaden your horizons a bit, read from Saint Augustine, On the State of God, for example, De Civtage Dei, but also the catechism of the Catholic Church, church fathers, apologists, church teachers, because we are not the smartest, especially when we put our I in the center of ourselves, your self-love, not God's everything! When we die to ourselves, we begin to live! When the original powers of the soul are the main ones, which are reason, memory and will! When they are united with Christ! And not when we are led by base passions and lusts of the flesh, the world and the devil! I am a theologian, psychologist, philosopher, who has been involved in exorcism rituals for 20 years. When you see that spiritual reality, then you see that you are not the one who knows everything by yourself! Of course, suffering and pain are egoistic and direct us to ourselves, as we see here, when they mock not cults, not false prophets, but the Virgin Mary, when everything is mocked, because a person is his own "God" and thinks he knows everything and that it is non-progressive, where it breaks God's first commandment by falling into idolatry! Just as the body cannot live without water and drink, so the soul cannot live without God, it is spiritually dead! Therefore, whoever does not feed on the Body and Blood does not have life in him, he is spiritually dead, and then so are animals, carrying low passions, belittling others to elevate himself, because he feels fulfilled only when he belittles another, which shows what lives in him and what is it full of! Therefore, let's come to ourselves, while we have someone to come to God who lives in us! We are not the ones who are looking for God, as much as He is looking for us within ourselves!!!

Now that I’m in my 70’s I wish I had discovered Bill Maher when I was younger…even my late father used to quote (wish I knew who said it first) - “Religion is the opioid of the masses!”
Karl Marx said it first
Opiate.
Marx wrote religion was “the opiate of the masses” - disconnecting disadvantaged people from the here and now, and dulling their engagement in progressive politics.
That's Karl Marx from "Das Kapital."
Funny how the less religious the country gets the worse off it is.
It’s sad and fright is how correct Maher has been in predicting everything since before 2016.
What about the firefighter? religion excuses:
-It was his time to go to his place with god
-God has another purpose for him
And you wonder why people are losing faith and religion in general. The amount of BS is staggering. And let's not forget how many denominations and schisms that has already taken place. People have already veered into their own form of worship at this point.
"People have already veered into their own form of worship"
Exactly. That's another religion, so clearly religion has always been a part of humanity and always will be, in many different forms
