Carpenter in interviews since it’s release has said this film is a documentary now. What started as his frustrations with the Reagan administration has overtime evolved into the continuous hypnotic cycle of consumerism. Aliens could come to earth and exploit us yet the consumerism adverts us away from what happens behind closed doors. Constantly being sold luxury and comfort is the best way to keep everyone else from questioning things.

This movie is an underrated masterpiece. Most people know the meme, not that many have seen it. You made some great points about it.
By the way, the fight between the two mains was supposed to be very brief, just a couple of punches, but the actors insisted on making it bigger and Carpenter agreed. Even though most of it was rehearsed, there's still some improvisation here or there (as seen when Roddy Piper starts laughing, clearly breaking character for a second). Carpenter kept the whole sequence in. It went from half a page of script to nearly six minutes (for those who don't know, one page of script = 1 minute of film).

The whole thing feels super low budget, TV sitcom-level set quality at best. But what they are able to do with it is still just amazing. John Carpenter makes very entertaining flicks. Big Trouble in Little China, Halloween, Christine, The Thing, Escape from New York..........
I actually think The Thing and Big Trouble are two of his best.

I just found out that you posted I have been watching all of the John Carpenter movies chronologically lately. Most of them were repeat viewings but I've had a few first viewings. My biggest surprise recommendation is In The Mouth of Madness.

"They Live" is a cool-vibe fun time, and doesn't take itself so serious; but has deep messages.
Another John Carpenter sci-fi/horror film is "Prince Of Darkness"(1987) whose cast includes Donald "Dr. Loomis" Pleasence and Alice Cooper. It's not a fast-moving action film, but a slow-burn with the tension building and building... It also has some unique concepts such as religion explained somewhat by physics/science and a cool first-type of time-travel theory.
It is also one of John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy" as is "The Thing".
Another tension-building film from 1987 with a more main-stream movie feel is "No Way Out"(1987) starring a young Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman. It's a tense spy thriller set during the cold war. It has been reacted to by almost no one.

I'm sure I've said this before but I love the way you interact with movies, I swear. So many people would have dismissed or judged this movie because of the effects, the fact that it looks dated and low budget, whatever, but you have a way of seeing past all that and really appreciating things for what they are. I adore this movie and I appreciate you because I know you'll always be generous to whatever film you're watching. You try to view them the way people saw them at the time. So great.

Love this movie❤. If you were at all interested to know. The lead actor Roddy Piper was homeless in his teens before wrestling& had been stabbed anumber of times (because some fans lose their reality button). He wore a leather jacket after not to look tough, but for protection. Much love Roddy❤❤ RIP Miss you.

I just got my brother to watch this a couple weeks back. He loved it. I told him it has some of the best one liners and dialog. Like "Mama don't like tattletales", "just put on the fuckin glasses man" and of course, "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum". Classic. Great reaction as always.
Fun fact: the fight scene between Roddey piper and Keith David is the longest ever fight scene in cinema history. I think it still holds that title.

I had the pleasure of watching this in a theater last year, I've seen it many times but hadn't seen it in a theater so it was awesome, the sound track slammed on the theater speakers. Also you should watch John Carpenter's The Fog, the musical theme is killer.

This was a commentary on The Reagan era and especially Reaganomics, with the introduction of the "trickle down theory".
So much of this film resonates today!
The choice to have the aliens be revealed in black and white, as well as their designs was a love letter to 50s B movies.
The homeless were played by actual homeless. That way they could all get money and a free meal.
Roddy Piper lost his job at the WWF by agreeing to work on this movie. However, it made Roddy a household name!

Carpenter's most under-appreciated film is one of my personal favorite movies; glad that you watched it, James! IMO it shows that you don't need huge-budget type special effects, expensive A-list cast, etc. to make an excellent, effective movie. And oh, yeah: that fight scene is easily one of the greatest fights ever put on film.
