I was thinking exactly that actually, Scarlett's subtle facial expressions when she was lying to Joan were very realistic. You could tell she was trying to sound convincing.

It really is true that in such a limited role, the subtle facial expressions and voice changes are all that can be presented, if they wanted to showcase their acting chops.

It would not have matter what she said. She was going to be fired. These things rarely happen over one event. In that economy of the 1960s the business would have struggled to find another skilled secretary.
Even people working as cashiers were hard to find hence why they were paid good wages. That's what a low tax, low regulations economy looks like.

@@bighands69 The 50's, 60's and 70's were a period with high taxes and a lot of regulation. The effects of FDR's New Deal programs were in full swing and the government was investing heavily in research and industry. The low tax and low regulation period started with measures taken by the Nixon administration in the early 70's and those effects really started to set in by the Ford presidency in the late 70's. The Reagan presidency really cemented and expanded tax cuts and curtailed government regulation and spending. So what you said is just plain wrong.

this is kinda hypocrite level, a lot of employees were slacking on the job specifically the men who got tipsy and the accountants also didn't have much to do most of the time. on top of that nothing really happened BUT i do agree that scarlett needed some sort of punishment maybe take like say 5 days worth of pay as a cut to her salary. u need to enforce a punishment that's strong enough to make sure it never happens again and also deter others from trying stuff like that but also not as strong as to make it look u r running a sweat shop over there

@@jenlindley7780 I have no understanding why people got so attached to her character. She seemed to revel in her control of the girls, and she didn't think of the big picture, as you note. The ability of good employees to occasionally play games with time cards should be an unspoken reward. Joan reminded me of those annoying teacher control freaks who made a big deal out of hall passes.
The only time I felt some sympathy for Joan is when she was passed over to work for Harry on TV, where she probably would have done great, but she didn't request it, and speaking up for yourself is part of corporate culture. You have to let it be known clearly that you really want something and you have the skills to do it well, which Peggy understood, just as she understood that it takes some courage and confidence to do.

I think it's one of the things that made the show so special. I wouldn't label Peggy or Joan as feminists. They're both very self serving. If you rewarch the show, Joan really has that queen-bee, petty highschool popular girl attitude.
