CHEAP and AWESOME- How to make a STRAIGHT RAZOR at home

After an impromptu visit to a specialty shaving store in Boston I fell in love with the look of a high quality straight razor. Unfortunately I don't have the money to throw at a $400 piece of shaving equipment so I decided to try my hand at making my own with basic knife making tools at home.
Here's how I did it!

I love seeing someone do stuff with basic tools. Sorry Folks I don’t have a power hammer but I do have an angle grinder and a 3 x 18 belt sander held in my vice. I’ve wanted to do this project for my brother and this video gave me the confidence to pull it off. Great video thx!

I have been thinking of this project for quite some time. I don't have the sufficient tools nor do I have as much experience as you do, but I will definitely give it a shot someday! Great looking razor your built there!
Typically the handle or "scales" stops the blade from Protruding the other side by the bevel wedging itself into the scales with no contact of the edge ;) not sure if you can damage the edge with your style of "stop" but it's your blade and I'm sure you'd be careful not to damage the edge. With you being a knife guy and all. But looks bad ass.

Hahaha thank you! My dog's name is Rocky and he's honestly the best companion ever. I highly recommend getting a black mouth cur like him, they're really playful and too smart for their own good.
I enjoy your videos and i like the positive comments on your vids.
But i havent noticed any critiques, and I think critique is a good thing as long as it isn't worded like an asshole.
The points I was concerned about with the razor is (and i am no expert or even close to knowledgeable) the "stopper" and the thickness of the edge. The straight razors I've come come across so far (not many) doesn't actually have a stopper. They just use the thickness at the blades back, to stop the blade from going through the narrower gap. My thinking is that this is to make sure you dont dull or damage the very thin edge. Which leads me to the thickness of your razor. To my eyes it seems a bit too thick. The razors I have held feel extremely thin (and have a hollow grind). Which seems logical since you want it to be crazy sharp, and the only sharpening you should have to do after/before using it is with a strop.
These are my amateur points of critique. I might be way off since I actually dont know anything about straight razors other than what i have observed and concluded in my head.
Great work though! Looks gorgeous and I certainly wouldn't complain if someone gave this to me.

You made a knife shaped like a razor, had you actually made a razor and honed it to the required sharpness to shave you face, not your arm, then your awfull technique would have landed you in hospital with your cheek cut off!!!

I had the crazy idea of using a stainless steel frying pan cutting out a straight razor shape then polishing drilling etc by hand would have taken a fair while admittedly no idea if it would work
I dont know if it would work out, but you'd be better off using a cheap kitchen knife as your source material. Also I would look up how thick the spine of average straight razors are so you can ensure your starting thickness is enough. From there, just be sure you know as much as possible about the kind of straight razors you want to emulate and good luck

Hm, in one of my earliest videos I restored a vintage axe and I've been considering recording the process of restoring an old pull knife that I was given. I've also been chewing on the idea of a tomahawk build for a while now.. good stuff, food for thought! Thanks for the ideas!

I dindt understand how did you made the heat treatment. Which gas did you used?
I tend to use MAPP gas for hardening small items such as this build as it burns much hotter than propane. It's not perfect but it can work if you don't have access to a proper forge. Happy building and thanks for watching!

This is not knocking the work you do ,But as a straight razor user for 30 years Ive always preferred the ones with grooves cut into the spine,
Some razors ive used where the spine has had them grip rigids worn so low the razor feels less stable when holding, especially if i get a bit of water on my finger,

@@cameronmccoy5051 yes jimping , then files cost a lot not a common file can`t find second hand on sites, and there are several file with width and depth, could you please tell me what one is the most commonest one use for cut throat razors please,

I tried making some pens from bubinga and yeah it’s so hard my gouges just shattered the blank instead of shaving pieces off. This is a cool project!

I used to work at a custom guitar shop and we would use scrap cocobolo for handles on tools, and it was beautiful. I hate is as a neck wood, because despite it being so dense, it's damn near impossible to keep it straight, but as a handle material it's one of my favorites. You should try that for some knife scales one day.

I don’t understand. Whenever I try progressing from a small bit through to a large drill bit I always get chatter no matter what I do. Anyone have any suggestions?
A lot of people clamp down their work pieces or set them in a vice before drilling through which could help limit vibration or chatter, could be worth a try. Also make sure you're using sharp drill bits! Dull tools make your life a pain. Hope this helps!

I actually ended up getting a better edge on this after this video using a diamond stone and a strop. Unfortunately I haven't had much cause to use the razor because I've been growing out my beard for months. Hahah. My advice would be to strop the razor at the very least before every use. :)

what do you quench it with? is it oil or just water?
In this case I just used water. I've found that at the lower temperatures that you get from a MAP gas torch water works very well with 1095, however as you may have seen in my chef knife video water quenching can get a little hairy with higher temperatures. Hahah.
