@@JosephRobinsonSMBX Well if you could do it officially (which means not using homebrew), nintendo would probably push out something like the Wii u gamecube ports, but with the memory card slots as well, but that's just if they did it back in the Wii's lifespan. Homebrew would be the unofficial way. Edit: Just to clarify, I want to say that the official way I talked about is just what I think would've happened back then during the Wii's lifespan. There are no adapters for gamecube controllers + memory cards for the 2nd generation Wii. Wii games have animated intros for their channels so I don't think it would've been too difficult for Nintendo to do that. Either way, it's only a minor nitpick lol.
Such an underrated feature of the Nintendo Wii...this and the Virtual Console. My Wii is my Gamecube and it is cheaper to play Gamecube games in 480P on the Wii than trying to track down the very expensive and rare original Gamecube component cables.
I opened one up and found that basically there is just some plastic and levers and stuff, and the way the plastic is makes the Gamecube disc center, and a normal sized wii disc pushes the plastic back to a normal size, and then when the wii disc is removed it goes back to the way it was before. I hope I explained that right, it is kind of hard to describe.
Of course you can play Nintendo GameCube games on the original version of the Nintendo Wii! However, Family Edition models sadly cannot play GameCube games, and I do have a North American NTSC Family Edition model of the Wii, which is why I have an actual Nintendo GameCube to play GC and Wii games separately. The Nintendo Wii doesn't support the Game Boy Player (which I don't have yet) anyway. Anyway, nice demonstration video!

Here's what actually happens: 1. The Wii Menu pings the disc drive, and detects a disc, which it identifies as a GameCube disc. 2. When you press Start, the System Menu sends an ES_LaunchBC IPC message to /dev/es 3. IOS loads BC from title 1-100 and executes it. 4. BC sets a flag in memory and loads boot2. 5. boot2 detects the flag set by BC and loads MIOS. 6. MIOS loads the GameCube IPL and launches it. 7. The GameCube IPL launches the actual game.

Somehow my Wii, can’t recognize any of the GC games I own. This Wii I bought days after its launch back in 2006. Wiping the GC games and blowing in the CD compartment for the Wii doesn’t help.

One of the sole reasons I stayed playing Nintendo as long as I did. Had 64 and Gamecube so I liked a lot of traditional controller games. The Wii was great but it was going away from that as Nintendo has more so since then with the switch. So this gave me a mix of both styles of gaming and games I really loved on Gamecube but then having some of the more family interactive and active stuff the Wii had as well. Seeing that traditional games made for Wii were not that great and almost dumbed down like madden, baseball, fps games, story based games, etc. My first Wii broke though, I think a power issue, and my second one the black model didn't have this so that's when I gave up gaming and Nintendo.

Thanks bro, I had no idea my Wii could do this. I bought it for Mario kart in 2010 and never played it again. I was 12 when GameCube first came out, and my parents had just bought me the Dreamcast a few months prior. Money was tight so I knew I couldn’t ask for another system. Now I can go back and play awesome games like Luigi’s Mansion and Metroid.
I didn’t know about this until I watched this. I’ve been starting to play on my Wii again after playing BoTW to go and play some of the older Zelda games. Glad to see I can play OoT and Majora’s Mask after I finish TP and Skyward Sword.

I didn’t know about this until I watched this. I’ve been starting to play on my Wii again after playing BoTW to go and play some of the older Zelda games. Glad to see I can play OoT and Majora’s Mask after I finish TP and Skyward Sword.

I put lego Batman in once and it showed up as a GameCube game, but then my brother turned the tv off
So the GBA was compatible with Gameboy games the wii plays GameCube games the wii u plays Wii games so what the hell is the switch compatible with ?

if you tried this for yourself and it didnt work, thats because in later models of the wii, it was no longer compatible

Hmm maybe because it was backwards compatible
I found something kinda creepy so I started up my Wii normally and it said the disc was the game cube but I never had a GameCube or anything from it and I reasted my Wii and it was gone and just the disc I was playing.
