For the storm chaser game too they could add side objectives or missions that go like “lady needs you to retrieve something from the house thats about to be fucking demolished” or “this institute needs data from this twister where you have to be in the most dangerous area for a certain amount of time” or even ones like “this guy wants you to to explode their neighbors house because he hates them” something like that
For photography games, I found Umurangi Generation's spin very simple but very clever, where it's a game about taking photos of specific things as it usually is, but the levels are specifically laid out enough that finding the specific angle plays out like a sniper game, so even though it's not about creativity, at least the challenge of "getting the shot" is laid out better as a challenge than it usually is in something like Pupperazzi, Pokemon Snap or Crush House. Also, just for your own entertainment, the controls and lenses the game gives you are pretty decent; it's still the only photography game I've played with manual focus control.
Crush House is also kinda similar to setting up a sniper shot, or I’ve also heard it described as “non-violent Hitman.” Trying to set up a shot that will best give all the audiences what they want is a really complicated task, especially if you get opposed audiences.
If you guys are keeping with the cardboard aesthetic a very funny contextualization of the storm chaser idea is that it is like a toddler throwing a tantrum and ripping all of the cardboard up and throwing things
After too much Burnout on my ps2, I really believed there was a game about GOLF, but balls were CARS and instead of clubs you put RAMPS to jump from. You had to drive the car to the ramp with the right speed to get a good shot, etc. That game never existed. I hallucinated myself into believing it existed.
I love the idea of a near-future dystopian driving game where it's 2-person co-op where you're battling AI and maybe other players in improvised vehicles with machine guns and shit on it. It's like a Halo capture the flag with Warthogs kinda vibe, but the game is really a commentary on gig work, and the flag is a food delivery app thing where everyone is fighting to kill each other just so they can be the one to deliver le borgar to someone's house for a meagre paycheque! I think that's epic and also le social commentary!!!
43:20 There are absolutely a few storm chasing games out there. The one I know of is just called Storm Chasers (i think) and you have to drive around and take pictures of thr tornadoes. You get more points the closer you get, and you also get points for debris in the shot.
The temptation to just blatantly steal the game idea near the end is palpable, that sounds soo good and I just wrapped up writing a jerky crazy taxi like car controller that's multiplayer compatible.
The talk of Twitch integration has me imagining an old skool dungeon crawler that pulls people who are active in chat randomly to put them in control of enemies in combat.
Think about the van in Phasmaphobia, but with a driver, side seat, and then 1 or 2 guys in the back monitoring things like wind speed, path projections for the storm, maps that have things that will improve the value of the footage (like cows swept up in Twister), and social media, that way they know who to target based on which opponent driver is stealing the most footage.
On the topic of racing games and ideas, I wouldn't worry so much about being original. It's FAR better to do something cool well than it is to do something original.
I didn't know about Sam before this podcast and It is mind-boggling how I've seen or heard of every single project he worked on and thought they were neat
A LAN only or self-hosted game would be so sick. Would allowing hacking and modding to be such a community thing that wouldn’t hurt anyone… is this enough to push you guys to undertake a still ridiculous task?! Really hope you guys make a game
I can picture the storm chaser game going up to four players with like a four seat pickup truck but the more players you add the more batshit insane the game becomes
Listening to this podcast and having experience in tech integration makes me want to do it with video games just so I can tell at it like Sam does. I just don't know where to start on my own.
Wonder if Julian saw the Raycevick "I love racing games, they suck" video with how he talked about there not being much room to create "new" things in the racing genre.
FFXIV did something similar to what was being talked about at the 20 minuet mark with how they ended the original version of the game ending its service run with the world being destroyed in game and the servers being shut down afterwards, they later on made the current version of the game in a different timeline n stuff
43:00 oppy literally says "not another one" as you get to her shop and throughout the game its mentioned. this happened in the lore, if they announced this game tomorrow, i wouldnt be surprised. i would also pay money for it, that would rock. hell, make it co-op; cameraman and driver!
this doesnt get out of my head. you could have a 2-4 player co-op (driver, navigator, cameraman roles) and it starts as regular stormchasing, then other people show up, then the others run you off the road, then you can buy pistols (adding gunner as a role) to ruin others tyres (or kill them), then you can get rifles and shotguns built for murder more than sabotage, all the while the storm is getting more and more supernatural, the whole thing culminating in grenading other people into a worldbending storm in an improvised APC while chasing the most interesting parts of the storm, fighting it the whole way to get the coolest photo/video. i want this game now, i might make it at some point
This is my idea about the storm chasing game: it’s a multiplayer game where different people or teams of people are all trying to get cool pictures of the storm while simultaneously sabotaging other people/teams and at the end of the game or match or whatever everyone submits their final photo and everyone votes on the photos (except their own) and whichever photo gets the most votes decides who wins and gets the most rewards. The rewards let you upgrade your car and your equipment and get better at surviving the storm and other people
JUMBO SAFARI!!!!! The sega game you're talking about where you drive a jeep to lasso wild animals. That game was neat! Sega AM team was innovative with arcade driving games. There was also this Ambulance game, Emergency Call Ambulance. The things that happen in the city that you have to drive through is chaotic. Clinton was a patient.
There used to be a TV show called Storm Chasers, on the discovery channel, there were people who legitimately did this during tornado season. They had a flatbed truck with a portable radar station for live updates on the storm, and a truck they had mounted a ton of steel plates and bulletproof glass onto to make a storm proof camera turret they could drive into the storms. The chase truck got heavier and heavier over time until it was basically a steel trapezoid with a glass dome lol
2:08 - Sam, you started off sounding like a very reasonably-minded person who has spent a passing minute thinking about commitments and goals, I would like to subscribe to your newsletter! *20 seconds later* ...have you... made a multiplayer game before?
Oh my goodness, where this idea ends up in less than 10 minutes is... 😂 This is someone talking themselves into jumping their bike off a cliff, convincing themselves it will be a safe landing on the other side! I love it. 😅
About the Opponent AI Part: Why does no video game give the players the option to create their Ai (obvl. gamefied), it would inherit your habits, skill level, name and quitks. Then you could couse AIs of friends or (with codes) viewers to play against + randomizer. Those AIs also would have ratings for skill, sportsmanship, etc. Then the AI is not to strong or bad it is just that u need to chose another and it as more challenge. Forza has its Drivertar System, I am baffled that they did not implement it.
If you just made a new Twisted Metal and/or made the smoothest, greatest controlling racing game of all time I will just buy that and be happy. Please. Please.
I do try to keep my projects small but the creep is far too real. I've just spent two weeks making a single asset... Perhaps I need to learn what good enough is
9:48 understatement of the century Edit: is some of the car game hesitancy maybe coming from the negative perception the vast majority of kart games have? A company doesn’t want to potentially greenlight *another* dime-a-dozen, shit-ass kart racer.
I'd honestly make the argument that the racing genre community has kinda been supplanted by the speed running community as a whole. Why seek out racing games specifically when every game can potentially be a racing game?
that storm chaser idea genuinely sounds fucking awesome

Agreed, Umurangi is also based and hates colonizers and facists so it's basically the perfect game.
Crush House is also kinda similar to setting up a sniper shot, or I’ve also heard it described as “non-violent Hitman.” Trying to set up a shot that will best give all the audiences what they want is a really complicated task, especially if you get opposed audiences.

favorite episode currently, both of them coming up with ideas on the fly was a treat to listen to

Aw, that’s an awesome sounding game.

23:25 i fuckin love the jokes like Sam saying hell DMCA your family and Noodle's deadpan "Gun"
The talk of Twitch integration has me imagining an old skool dungeon crawler that pulls people who are active in chat randomly to put them in control of enemies in combat.
the old logos are so fitting lmao

finally, a use for apple podcasts
A storm chasing game where it ends up with both players yelling at each other in panic fumbling trying to keep their car together and take out items
Game Development Is Easy EPISODE - AT 13:50 "One thing i'm grateful for is that im not an ideas guy"
I'm not even 9 minutes in and Sam is already proposing some weird-fuck twitch integrations for what was it a 50k dollar project? This is a wild one.
my brain cant run this episode well
Good episode
I didn't know about Sam before this podcast and It is mind-boggling how I've seen or heard of every single project he worked on and thought they were neat
Safari chaser was AMAZING and I played it to completion one night at my local arcade when free play was turned on.
32:16 the safari

who up finaling their v3
Sorry, but I will absolutely have the role of "guy walking around with an 'The End Is Near' sign"

if you lot dont make the storm chaser game, i might steal it a bit, adapt it but steal it.
calling it b# is god tier humor and i don't know if they realize
it is funny indeed... can you now please tune my guitar to Fb
You don't even need to give the other vehicles guns, just have them ram you into the tornado like its most wanted. Phenomenal idea tho
Storm chaser as a couch coop would be amazing
1 player is the storm chaser, but their camera is controlled by the 2nd player who is the storm
Hell yeah, not sleeping is paying off
This is my idea about the storm chasing game: it’s a multiplayer game where different people or teams of people are all trying to get cool pictures of the storm while simultaneously sabotaging other people/teams and at the end of the game or match or whatever everyone submits their final photo and everyone votes on the photos (except their own) and whichever photo gets the most votes decides who wins and gets the most rewards. For the whole "doing new things in le racing game," have you seen Airframe Ultra? (I am not experienced in racing games, it just looks absolutely rad)
Steve Jobs wake up new finale v3 episode!!!
It sounds like yall watched the movie Twisters about the storm chaser idea, not sure if there are other movies like it

You said multiplayer, and co-op is in fact multiplayer. But seriously the stormchasing idea sounds gteat.
Anyone remembers harms way
