  • This is Episode Four of a series covering my trek to retrace the route of grandfather in World War II. He was one of the "Ghost Mountain Boys" who crossed the Owen Stanley Mountains on the Kapa Kapa Trail in Papua New Guinea, to face the Japanese at Buna.
This is a 3 week hike and I've been talking about how much I struggled over this difficult terrain. In this episode I'm going to take a break from the struggling to talk about what it's like to trek in Papua New Guinea - where we stayed, what we ate, and more.
We're trekking through dense jungles with no roads, and sometimes no trails. But there are villages along with way, often several days walk from any roads, and even farther from towns. These villages would take us in for the night, first giving us a traditional greeting often with music, singing, and dancing. They would give us a building to stay in for the night, and a toilet we could use (it's a small hut with a hole in the ground). They would share food with us, which was supplemented with food carried by our porters.
In this video, see some of the traditional greetings in these remote Papua New Guinea villages, and get an idea what it's like to trek in remote locations. You can see how we bathed, where we slept, and what an amazing, beautiful country this is.
