Chris, where have you been all of my life. Ok I'm in my 70s now so I do know the answer to that question :) I have been painting and drawing since I could hold a crayon. I have been painting all through the years but life happened and never got any real training. What I do know I've taught myself. and its been off and on and mostly what others wanted me to paint. Good money, but not what I was looking for. wasn't painting the way I wanted to. I'm retired now, set up a nice studio and started watching other artist on TH-cam. What I can tell you Chris, this has been the biggest waste of my time until I found you. Thank you for making it so straight forward, easy to understand, and the honest simple truth. You are a great teacher. I'm going to my studio now , locking the door with a sign that says " If you do not hear from me in three months call the undertaker. ; )

Another great odorless paint thinner (as availability can change from place to place) is Mona Lisa. Has the Mona Lisa painting on the bottle. Easy to find in most of Canada and excellent stuff.

My off days are Sunday and Monday, and by God, I’m going to PAINT!! Come hell or high water, I WILL get better!! (My goal is to retire and plein air paint). Which is WAY more relaxing than working in a prison.......
I used turpenoid in college (not Gamsol so can’t speak to how its properties might differ) and can confirm it’s a very bad idea in smaller spaces for some migraine sufferers. Only time in my life I’ve had one last for more than 48 hours was when I worked a few particularly long days in my parents’ basement even with a window open. I switched to water mixable when I moved to Boston because I knew I’d be in an even smaller space than previously, and the switch worked for me. I ended up taking a long multi-year hiatus from painting, but am starting back in now I’m in a better space for it (literal and metaphorical).
When I did my first oil painting I tried to save money by using OMS from the hardware store. My lungs ached after every session. I switched to Gamsol and it never happened again. If you paint indoors (or even outdoors), please save yourself and don't paint with cheap mineral spirits. Get the good stuff, trust me.
Whow, what a breath of fresh air you are. You’ve got a new fan in me. ..I went to Art college 20 years ago, and frankly it damaged my passion for painting. I haven’t created in a long time, and I stumbled on your videos and feel inspired. You are very easy to listen to and you come across humbly with no bs. Gréât points about enjoying the process instead of the end result, I know I became very impatient and stopped enjoying the process and all the talk in the art world about artist’s passions etc gets blown up when really there are some days one will have to make it more of a discipline and get that palette out when they don’t feel like it. I mean it made me feel like a failure, why I wasn’t creating anymore. But life can tear us down and we get eroded and just pushing through we can find our way back. I get the toxic fumes issue. For myself, I do not use Mineral Spirits or Liquin indoors. When I am painting indoors I use either linseed oil or walnut oil, sometimes mixed with stand oil as my medium. It works for me.

In terms of the smells, I use water-mixable oils and solvent-free medium so there's no smells at all and I can just clean up with soap and water. It's great.
I found it good for cleaning brushes but not as a solvent for painting when I tried it more than a decade ago. Maybe they’ve improved the formula, but back then it dried with some coloration and could alter the colors in washes, so it wasn’t a true substitute for turpenoids. I can’t recall for sure if it also dried a little sticky or if that was something else I was working with at the time, but I think it did dry sticky.

I wonder if you make more income through patreon, youtube etc then actually selling paintings. im a stay at home mom who plans on homeschooling. The air filter is a really good idea! I’m taking oil painting classes at my university right now and... they’re online at home 😬 they’re making us use as non-toxic materials as possible, but I still find that whatever causes the paints to oxidize and cure affects my lungs so I need something to help with that especially now that it’s winter and I can’t open all my windows. I’ve been trying acrylics because they do give off less, but I low key kind of hate them 🥲
Thanks for the info on water soluble stuff. Today is Day 1 of my oil painting efforts and my sinuses are now singing and wheezing! Not sure if it’s because of or despite sitting by the open door and window with the cold air coming in. Something was strong in the materials I was using. Had decided I might postpone further efforts until next spring/summer but I’ll look into these products first.
The shadow looking at the drawing on the right eye; the crescent shadow underneath should of extended a little bit towards the inner eye. Also, the nose highlight on the right has looks as though its a little too bright and makes the nose kinda off. I've never painted a face but it looks difficult.
My grandmother tells me that im not ever going to be at a professional level in my art because i wasnt born talented. Can you become a professional artist with out being born talented? I love painting. I love art oils are my favorite, but here lately i havent been able to paint. I need more supplies, and i just dont have the money for it right now. Im starting to wonder if i should just give up or if i should try to keep learning. I have so many ideas coming into my head. I just dont know how to get it on canvas yet. My mom is working on giving me a whole room for my art she dosent want me to give up and she always had been so supportive of my dreams. I dont want to make a career out of my art but i do want to make beautiful art that im proud of.
oomggg i love i channel. i have a qa. can we paint on any wood material wood panel to get good result. and i am using winsor and newton alkyd paint. so after how much time minimum should i wait to varnish it

It seems you have not yet been given an answer yet. Let me try to step in. On principle there is nothing wrong with acrylics. And I believe Chris would say: If it is acrylics or nothing, then go with acrylics. It is most important "to go get painting". But he himself prefers oils for his kind of painting, he likes to "move the paint around", which is trickier with acrylics because they dry so much faster. With acrylics you have less time to correct your mistakes, except that they dry a lot faster and then you can paint over the mistake. But that might not work so well.
I am currently watching the video so you might be answering it within this but where do you get your references from? My biggest issue as an artist is trying to pull references.
I prefer normal terps. That way you can smell it, if you do not have enough ventilation. It is a grave mistake to think odorless means non-toxic. It is as toxic as the stuff that smells. It being odorless just makes them more dangerous. A less toxic choice would be spike oil.
Hey, I have a question about making your own paint. I have linseed oil and sennelier dry pigments (the 5 primary colors). How do I know that my mix of ingredients will be quality?

Turpenoid natural is non toxic ...thinner...see the safety data sheet of this product. I found this recently...very useful

Some sitters are difficult to paint, so tough to achieve 100% likeness on this one

If you paint on wood you want to prime it with a few coats of gesso bc the wood will be too absorbent
I'm learning to paint through bob ross, so i can do landscapes okay.. but fine details are so hard lol

Odourless Mineral Spirits is less toxic than turpentine. However, you are correct in still needing ventilation.
