  • Hello, very short upload today): I’m sorry I like the long videos too so maybe I’ll post another video tomorrow if I have time to edit today
    But here a sit down video of me talking about all the pros and cons of being a ready mix driver! I hope you guys enjoy this style of video although I prefer the get up and go videos 😂
    Also the comment I mentioned in the video that i want to bring to light is:
    “ @brandonGCHACHU • 3w ago
    I'ts good you addressed the fact that your working for your Pops and with your Brother and that they look out for you.
    The reason I say this is because I'm sure a lot of young ladies might see your channel and decide to do what you're doing but have a completely different experience than what you're having.
    They might have nobody defending them and may experience abuse and harassment etc and then be upset they followed your path. I love your transparency and how you speak with your heart. That's a rare quality nowadays. I wish you continued success in everything you do in life.”
    Have a great weekend 🤘❤️

    I just started a ready mix job. I have about a month into it. I came in with no experience and I have learned a lot since I’ve started. It’s a good job so far and tbh I’ve been liking it. I definitely agree with your pros and cons but theirs one con Id like to add for the people that are thinking about joining. One big con for me is dealing with the a-hole construction workers. A lot of them are rude, they want everything fast and perfect. They get angry for literally everything and it’s very discouraging. Makes me pause and think about this job and if it’s a right fit for me. They act like that towards everybody, even the experienced drivers but they all tell me don’t worry about them, take your time and move slowly because safety comes first and you never want to hit something while driving in a job site. They tell me to G.O.A.L even tho they get mad and rush you which I would definitely like to use every time I go some place new but it always feels like I can’t.

      I’m having this exact thought. I’ve been driving mixer for 3 weeks and a lot of times that I get to a job site the workers are looking angry at me and and they want it done fast but they want it done so they have to do the least amount of work. I can’t get it done fast and perfect at the same time. It’s almost impossible to pour it perfectly level especially for me because I drive a mixer with a front chute, where I have to control how fast the mud comes out and I have to control the chute as well.

    Hi Lexie, using the microfiber after putting it down on the floor/concrete surface, you'd never want to use it directly on let's say your BMW without first washing it properly in your washer/dryer so that you don't pick up any rocks/debris/contaminants so you don't scratch your paint on the BMW! I'm sure you already know this, but just in case, it's a good reminder for everyone who cares about their cars! I also admire how much you care about having a nice cement mixer and the efforts you put forth washing and acid rinsing it as well! Thanks and keep hustling! All the best to you!

Got promoted at my company to project Manager and a year later my top customer came to me and said name your price, i start there in August. All because I maintained an open mind to learning and helping and never bought int "it's not my job."

    I have commented before about how I am impressed with your mentality and your work ethic and how that is SOOOO different from the hundreds of young people I have worked with over my career, and with this video, it just clicked in my head. You are a thinker, and you seem to think your way through things and get them figured out on your own many times. Again, that impresses me, because it is so different from what I have become used to in people of all ages. On average, I work with 300-400 people every day at work and many days, it is a mental drain for me because I always expect people to be able to handle and figure out the most basic things -- and many many times, it is a letdown. You are refreshing bright light. 🤠👍

    I was a Special Inspector in California for quite a few years. Held ICC certifications in Reinforced Concrete, Bolting, Masonry, Welding, ACi Concrete Testing, Nuclear Gauge for soil compaction and the most important one was a CWI certification through the American Welding Society. The CWI cert. really changed the playing field. You seem like a really intelligent and ambitious person so to advance your career , I'm sure you would have no trouble obtaining these certifications. For 10 years I was a welding inspector at an oil refinery in the bay area working for a company that had one of the contracts with the refinery. I was inspecting the structural welding aspect and not the piping aspect, two different jobs. At times the hours are long but the pay was outrageously good. Check into becoming a Special Inspector and/or a CWI if you find it interesting.
    On a side note I really enjoy your videos and your enthusiasm. Also driving that big ol concrete rig down some those narrow streets in the residential areas is pretty impressive. Stay positive and stay safe.

      Hey! I’m so happy you left this comment, I’ve made comments in my TH-cam videos how I’m interested into going that route. I just don’t know where to start? I know there’s classes online but I rather do then in person, there’s a school 40 minutes from me where I can get all these certs as well but they’ve been booked all year since the beginning of this year.
      Also did u right away get in with a company and stay with a company,
      Or did u ever go independent? What do you recommend, thank you again for leaving this comment 🙏 I really think this is what I’m leaning towards to doing next

    • @1finepoint
      @1finepoint หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lexflowaz I was fortunate to go to a school that only taught the three basic Special Inspector Certs, Reinforced Concrete, Masonry & Bolting/Welding. This is not the AWS CWi welding certification, taht's a totally different animal. I would suggest getting on the waiting list for the school. The reason being you are going to be learning subjects that you're unfamiliar with and having a instructor there to answer your questions is a benefit. I've only experienced an online class once and that was when a youngster where I worked wanted to add the Reinforced Concrete cert to his ACI concrete testing, they go hand in hand. So first thing I would do is sign on a waiting list at the school. Now concerning the mail order. I think it was a company out of LA that he dealt with. The plans were laminated and they had been used so much that they were worn really hard to read and the questions didn't seem to be straight forward but rather ambiguous. Myself and another inspector were trying to help him but we couldn't figure out what was being asked much less what the answer was. Everything you need to know about structural requirements on a job are on the "S" for structural pages and the structural general notes will give you just about everything the engineer requires structurallyie. grade of rebar, concrete strength, bar lap for rebar, concrete coverage of rebar, type of epoxy, how many test cylinders required, usually 5 but some engineers will want 6.
      Your question about finding a job. That was never a problem. Special Inspectors were in such a high demand that the Inspection Companies would come to the school and recruit the students. They would come around during the last week of classes, the classes being staggered so you would have graduating clases every two weeks., and sign up new employees. So a job was never hard to find. If you go independent, I think at that time it was $60 and hour with a 4 hour minimum for an independent. You were an independent contractor so you had to hustle your own jobs and keep track of your taxes, pay for your own medical, wear and tear on your truck, etc. With going with a company I would suggest a union company and the Union would be the Operating Engineers 3 union. Going union you always get prevailing wage plus an excellent retirement. Big difference between $25 and hour and $60 an hour. And only a union company is allowed to inspect on public financed jobs, such as any job that's financed with public money, that being taxes.
      Get your ACI first. Then reinforced concrete., epoxy bolting, masonry then high strength bolting/welding. You need a separate cert. for epoxy bolting. Sometimes on the job site will be epoxying rebar or bolts and a cert is needed for the inspection.
      Sometimes there are previous educational or work requirements prior to obtaining a cert. I b.s.ed my way through some of them, just have to be creative. But during my career I was always fair, never a construction "policeman" and was never asked to leave a job. Some inspectors let the power go to their head and get to be real aholes. The common denominator to inspections is "common sense." You will hear that time and time again. Just use your common sense in addition to what you learn. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Requirements might have changed since I tested, but like I said if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll answer if I can. For your ACI cert contact/google the ACI, (American Concrete Institute) for a testing seminar in your area. That cert costs around $360. I thing it was 2 days weekend of learning and testing the following weekend. 7 tests.

    • @1finepoint

      Any company can inspect on a public job, but the inspector has to be paid prevailing wage by their company. The state will sometimes audit the job site and make sure that inspectors are being paid prevailing wage.

    Was the inspector on a big box store that was being built in Fremont, Calif. The slab on grade was being poured and was being tailgated. There was one concrete driver that was a female, she was fairly young, maybe early mid twenties and attractive, such as yourself. The washout was one of those little blue hard plastic portable wading pools. The only way she could position her truck for washout was with the ladder side facing the pour. When she would climb up the ladder and start washing out the barrel, naturally she would have to bend over and when that happened the work on the pour would pretty much stop. The concrete foreman said he was going to complain to the concrete company asking that she not be allowed to deliver to the job because he waslose production when she was on the jobsite. The job superintendent got wind of what he was purposing and confronted him. He told him that if he couldn't control his men than maybe he sould be replaced. Good for the superintendent. On a side note
    the girl driver was an Army veteran and was deployed to Afghanistan as a transport driver. So here we have an army veteran trying to do her job and some douchbag wants to kick her off the job because HE couldn't do his job.

    If it's yours, you take better care of it than you would as a mere driver/op.
    The cons are many.
    1) other drivers on the roads.
    2) working with some bad cement crews.
    3) pours demand a total commitment, leaving little time for a break and the stress of getting reloaded ASAP.
    4) (maybe not so much in California) weather dictates if you make money.
    5) mixers only carry one load type and can't branch out to pick up lots of money making opportunities, like a flatbed or box trailer could.
    6) mixers are almost entirely stuck within a small geographic service area.
    7) mixers sustain a lot of wear and tear.
    8) mixers use a lot of fuel.
    9) mixers spend over half their road miles empty, with no opportunity to back haul.
    10) mixers are top heavy and easy to flip in turns or curves.
    I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

I just believe that most men have accepted the fact that some men are going to be weirdos, creeps, make you feel uncomfortable, have bad intentions. I work in construction in Norway and over here, we have ladies doing everything, from the hands on building, to the driving of big machinery. It’s sad to hear in the online forums how bad it can be for women in construction in other places, so it’s really cool to see you promoting and giving an honest opinion on it.
    I think it’s so much fun building shit and even more fun when you’re doing it with good folks.

    working in a family business, definitely has its pros and cons. People sometimes think you have it easy because you are working for family. Most of the time, you're held to a higher standard and have higher expectations. Worked for my father from the time I was 12 until i graduated college. Wasn't always easy.

    I have worked as both a mixer truck driver and a batcher. Your list is pretty good. One big con is that sometimes the concrete workers aren’t ready or the jobs cancel and you have to reroute to another site. It is also important for drivers to have good common sense. Most concrete workers on a job site just want to get the job done and don’t think like truck drivers. It is up to a driver to determine if the ground is too soft to drive on or if there are obstructions. A simple pull over and phone call to a customer can save a lot of headaches. With this kind of work it’s extremely important to not just be on autopilot. Situations are fluid and as a driver, it’s often a judgement call as to what is possible to do in a mixer truck and what you should say no that isn’t a good idea. A customer never wants to hear that they need to get some wheel barrows or rent a mud buggy. Women are also safe on our job sites. I’ve worked with women before and they were never once spoken to negatively because they were a woman. That being said, when they made mistakes, they were called out on it constructively. Just like the men on the job. Some could handle it and some couldn’t. The best way to describe a mixer truck drivers best traits is strong willed enough not to put themselves and their truck in a bad situation yet flexible enough to always be learning something new. There are many different kinds of concrete construction jobs , especially in the commercial sector.

    THE CONS ; I have never met someone who worked as a concrete driver that liked it and that's why you see ads for CC drivers every where ! But unless you're related to the company's owner like ole missy here , like she said ,, go for it ! Dry van is the best , just pop your doors open , back in and kick back and take a nap , unless its LTL to where you must touch freight with a pallet jack , which is much easier than having to perform all that labor with the Mixer truck ! F - that !

      You need to buy a few concrete pumps and trucks and maybe you can get noticed. 10k a week isn't much if you have the equipment. There's plenty of business owners making that a week.

    Hi!! I’m late to watching your video :(
    I just thought of something and was wondering what your opinion is on it. 🤔
    Would you ever want to have your own Discord server? I think it would be such a great middle ground between getting to talk with your community/share ideas/answer questions while also still having your own privacy (that you wouldn’t have with other social networks).

    • @lexflowaz
      @lexflowaz  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hii! Aw why so late this time, you’re one of the few people I always see commenting! and I’ve thought about twitch😳 but I’m not sure what the differences are.. what Can i do on a discord server and what can I do on twitch?

    • @Nishinga.
      @Nishinga. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lexflowaz yeah I love your videos! I actually started being a driver for UPS this week so it’s been a lot of training. I was nervous about starting but you actually played a big part with inspiring me to go try it, I know it’s much different than what you do but you make truck driving look so easy (and fun!) so I wanted to give it a shot 😁
      Great question though! Twitch is a great platform for live-streaming whether it’s real life stuff you’re doing (like if you wanted to livestream cleaning your truck!) or video games if you play them.
      Followers are essentially the same as a subscription on TH-cam. It’s free to “follow you” and they’ll be updated when you start your stream and community updates!
      People can pay a monthly subscribtion to you as a way of showing their support to you, and also they can donate money to you if they would like to.
      You can create your own “emotes” (they’re like emojis) that your viewers can use anywhere on the website!
      While your streaming, there’s also live commentary going on from the viewers. You can change it so only your followers and/or subscribers can chat with you, or anyone at all!
      Discord is like a community where people can go and talk with each other, share pictures/videos/music, etc. You can create different “channels” within your server that is specific to anything you want!
      For example, you can create a channel called “Work Tales” where people share their stories of being on the job and anyone can react to it. Or you could create a channel where people share ideas for new videos amongst each other!
      What I love about discord is you can post a link to the server (like in your video description on TH-cam) that acts as an invitation for anyone who wants to join. It’s a great way to curate a healthy community that people found from watching your videos, and allows people to get to know each other!
      There’s also multiple voice channels you can have where people can join in and just talk to each other! So it could be just two people talking all the way up to a big virtual group call!
      I believe you can also stream directly from your Discord but people often like to live stream on Twitch, and then use Discord as a way of connecting more with the community.
      Having a Discord server is like having your own club house for you and your friends! 😄
      I didn’t realize how long this was but I just wanted to be thorough haha.
      Let me know if you have any questions, I’m more than happy to help! ☺️

      Wow thank you that was very informative! Thank you! I would love to create a community but Iam a little iffy about putting myself out there more since I do get a lot of trolls. But it is all new to me still so maybe later down the line when I feel more comfortable and safe I will open up more platforms! But seriously thank you for all the knowledge! And good luck on your new adventure! I hope you are always safe out there and enjoy it! I thought about being as usps driver before I got my license! Which is crazy to think back to

    • @Nishinga.
      @Nishinga. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lexflowaz aw no worries at all! I’m happy to help! I totally forgot to mention this part but thankfully you or someone else who you make a moderator can ban/block all the trolls and negative people from the community. Think of them like security guards haha.
      I completely understand where you’re coming from though! People can be so rude and it’s scary to open up yourself up like that. Even when I’m reading some of your comments, someone says something mean and it makes me so angry cause you’re the nicest person and don’t deserve that negativity at all! They’re just miserable and want to bring others down to their level by being as hurtful as possible.
      So yes take your time with anything you decide on and do whatever makes you feel safe, happy and comfortable!! I’ll be in your corner 😄
      Also thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement!! I haven’t driven a big vehicle since I worked for my dads general contracting/construction company back in 2016, so it’ll be like a whole new experience again!
