  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6 mile circular walk from Highcliffe Castle (located to the East of Christchurch) to Mudeford Quay, across to Hengistbury Head & back. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the Steamer Point car park and after a quick wander along the beach, I initially head Eastwards through the Steamer Point Nature Reserve to visit Highcliffe Castle.
Leaving Highcliffe Castle, I return through the Nature Reserve and head Westwards along the promenade, past Gundimore House, The Anchorage & Sandhills to Mudeford Quay.
At this point I take the ferry for a short ride across to Mudeford Sandbank where I come across the starting point for the 64 mile Stour Valley way long distance path.
After a short climb up on to the top of Hengistbury Head, I get to enjoy some stunning 360 degree views - looking back North towards Christchurch as well as West to Old Harry Rocks & East to the Isle of Wight.
At the double dykes at the Western end of Hengistbury Head, I start my return journey by taking the “land train” back to the Mudeford sandbank jetty …. it was a bumpy ride (!) …. and then the ferry back to Mudeford Quay.
After light refreshments at the Haven House Inn, I continue back to the start of my walk at the Steamer Point car park.

Now this is a route that is doable for me. I laughed out loud reading the ferry price board at the end of the vlog...Parrots free, kitchen sink £1.00 🤣🤣🤣 Someone has a sense of humour.

I used to visit Highcliffe in the 70s.
We stayed at the campsite behind the pub.
In an Edwardian wooden tram with original fittings and oil wick lamps.
    It was amazing.
The back wall was knocked out and extended.
Massive blackberry bushes at the back and outdoor loo.
It’s long gone but would be worth loads now.
    What a great adventure.

Dave has the perfect approach to doing a Tour of the area. It works very well for me. I could watch this Walking tour for hours. Very relaxing, Dave, as I'm getting ready to move to Christchurch and would love to go Beach hiking. Cheers, Mate!

Is a Whippet like a Greyhound? Devo? Whippet good!

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

@@SeanMorgan280 Whippets and Greyhounds are similar. A Greyhound is bigger and faster although a Whippet will get to it's top speed (35MPH) quicker (I.e. has the faster acceleration). Basically if they had a "race" over 100 yards, the Whippet would be leading at 50 yards but the Greyhound would be leading at 100 yards (with a higher top speed of 45 MPH). They are both Sighthounds.

Thank you, Dave really enjoyed that.
My grandparents used to take my brother, sister and I to Mudeford for a walk on the beach and a play in the sand. Saw my first jellyfish on Mudeford beach. After the beach they'd take us to Barton-on-Sea to get fish and chips then on to Highcliff to eat them.
My wife and I did the same with our children before they became teenagers.
Now it's Mrs G and me down to Mudeford, scallops from the fish stall then cook them in the back of the work van in the car park.
    Love it.

I haven’t visited Mudeford or Hengistbury Head for at least 50 years, when I lived in Southampton as a kid. My father as an OS surveyor would probably have used that trig point occasionally. There used to be bamboo growing on the headland. How it got there I don’t know, but local scout troops, including mine, were tasked with harvesting the stuff. It was sent up to London Zoo for the Giant Panda. Thanks for another gentle stroll through the landscape and in this case, down memory lane too.

Another perfect day in Dorset Dave, makes me think you have voodoo powers, all we seem to get is cloud, rain and wind!
Is the cafe still there mid-way along the beach huts at Mudeford? Memories of cold, breezy winter walks on a Sunday morning, up around the Head, then pop into the cafe for a warming, steaming mug of hot chocolate before returning to the car. I'm talking probably 20 years ago so the cafe might be gone now. Excellent work as usual.

I have visited and walked here a few times. It's a lovely area and I always enjoy the ferry ride. Sometimes I walk along the harbour shoreline parallel to your bumpy train ride which is a nice walk by the waterside. You had one or two mishaps with the bumpy road and rogue wave!! How did Logan like the doggie ice cream? Thanks for sharing the beauty of Hengistbury and surroundings and for all the interesting information about Highcliffe castle.

Beautiful video once again Dave, brought back memories of the early seventies and my time spent in that area working at a small panel shop on Southbourne Overcliff, would often drive down to Hengistbury Head for a luchtime wander around or a couple of pints in the Saxon Inn.

I love that place Dave. Walked around there many times and over to Hengestbury on a couple of occasions. Of course, when the tide is running through that narrow channel, the ferry can't operate. Those Land Trains are best on a smooth surface , as you discovered.

Very nice Dave! I've been in the Haven House Inn on many occasions over the years, the last time was around 3 years ago. Its quite quirky inside. There are quite a few interesting pubs as you walk along the lanes in the area. I used to go to Mudeford Quay as a kid and sit on the edge crab fishing. There used to be a lot of holiday chalets to let on the top of Highcliffe, but I think they've all gone now due to erosion. I hope the pint eased things at the end before you got wet feet! Cheers!
