Joanna you made my day. I've caught thousands of them. Over here we call them pocket gophers. They do lots of damage. I set traps bare handed. No scent control needed. I realize your in a sheep pasture. I leave the hole open because light triggers them to plug the hole. They do not like light. I wish I lived closer . I would give you a hand. You did great on your first check.

& in response to the yank trapper,...."I leave the hole open because light triggers them to plug the hole" ? ,...well I'm afraid that's not a practise that would yield results, with any of the available mole traps, over here (completely different species altogether anyway, also)

Wow. We don't have moles in Ireland thankfully. I suppose you could make the argument that they are helping with drainage, but they do a lot of damage. Nicks ability to wear shorts no matter the weather is rather impressive!

    • @DaleFarm

Wow no moles in Ireland I didn’t know that! Well they soon start to make a mess if left to their own devices

You need to adjust your traps better because you are catching the Mole around the gut, to adjust the trap set it and bend the trigger forward to move it closer to the catching loop, then on the top side move the trigger arm so it is only just resting on the catch, I do this once it's in the tunnel, this will give less resistance and the Mole won't have to push the trigger so far to spring the trap. Too much resistance is a reason why the Mole back fills the trap, the other reason is the Mole is actively digging where your setting the trap. You would be better looking around the field edges or along the walls for very small Molehills and find the more permanent tunnels that require very little maintenance so less chance of back filling. After catching a Mole you need to put the Trap back in the same place and keep doing it until you have atleast three days with no catching or disturbance. A Mole is not afraid of your scent you do not need to wear gloves apart from keeping your hands clean and think logically you cannot mask scent from a dog because it smells in layers and I am sure a Mole that is blind and lives underground has a more sensitive nose than a dogs and you have had those gloves in your possesion, touched them inside and out so no way rubbing some soil onto them will get rid of your scent. If you have a constant problem with Moles on your campsite do what I said and look for the permanent tunnels along the borders and leave a trap in constantly and just check it periodically. The best traps for this is a Le Court trap aka Putange they are more effective than the Duffus tunnel traps. I used to use Tunnel traps but they take too long to set and too many failures, for field work prefer Talpex traps but these are no good for permanent situation trapping unlike the Duffus or Le Court. Look at some of my Videos for catching Moles.

Caddyshack day at Dale Farm. If there's an animal that brings out the f*bombs in me, it's moles - them and squirrels. I call moles tunnel rats and squirrels tree rats. Those individuals who 'squawk' about killing moles [or squirrels] have never had to deal with destruction them damn critters do. Anyhoo...good learning curve you two - well done on first effort! I gave a little laugh when you asked if people might be offended...it's the internet, they'll find something to be offended about. :)
But it is one of those necessary chores if you have a big mole problem and it is good for the welfare of the sheep to have them removed. As they kill grass, carry disease, and if left unchecked can get very bad for the livestock.

Gee those Mole traps work well. I read the description and I was just wondering what diseases do they carry? We don't have Moles here at the farming area in Queensland Australia where I live but we do have wild pigs and they are an absolute destroyer on legs. They decimate crops and kill newborn calves and lambs. We have pig hunters call in occasionally and at times all neighbours have put money in together for a professional shooter to come in a helicopter and cull pigs at a dozen or more farms from the air. As you so very correctly said Joanna "it's pest control". Sadly there'll probably be some complaints from the ignorant, arrogant, farmer-hating, superior types that you can never reasoned with, but they're not even worth acknowledging. It's necessary pest management. Very interesting vid Joanna and Nick. Top work.

    • @DaleFarm
      @DaleFarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That’s interesting about the wild pigs! I never knew that!
Moles the main worry is transmission of listeria to the hay ,
In addition they obviously ruin the land with the mole heaps!

My father was a licensed Mole catcher, hie business name was '00 Mole'. I would have to follow a tractor ploughing collecting worms, Father would pay a very nominal sum per hundred. He used Strychnine, from Boots the chemist. Very effective at eradicating moles and painless for the moles. Eventually it was considered Strychnine was too lethal for mole control, and licences were revoked. He continued with traps, but less effective, and unfortunately not always a quick kill.
With traps, when they are new the moles will avoid them, we would bury them in soil for a while before we would use them.

The chapel is so lovely! Unfortunately, moles can be a problem leaving areas that livestock and sometimes people can trip in. We have had them in our lawn area around our house in the mountains and Jeff uses some sort of sonic stick that seems to chase them back into the woods. If only our pesky little ones would just all stay where they belong. Thank goodness you have so many woolly supervisors to survey the work quality (you just have to love sheep) Take good care.

Another excellent video; thank you. I learn so much from you both. Nick, nice to hear you so much more on a video. Well done catching so many, especially the first time out of the trap; if you'll forgive the pun? What do you do about the rats and pigeons etc., at the farm? I follow a few air-rifle exponents who do well killing them off. Some good bags of vermin. Fewer disease problems and destruction of walls etc.
Surprising what you can learn from YT, is it not? Keep up the great work, Steve...

    Hi Joanna,
Great Video!! you have really made my day lol 🤣
Now here's a bit of information that I read somewhere many years ago. How effective the idea is I do not know, but it does sort of make sense 🤔 You get plastic windmills (the kids toy variety) and place these at each molehill. Apparently when the wind blows the sails, the vibration travels down the stems to the tunnel and the mole does not like it. The mole then decides to tunnel elsewhere. That's my tip for the day...🎅🤣👍🏻

They are actually moving around and a Male covers tens of miles a night if he has to. One Mole does about 1.5 hectars of visible damage, some 2000 active Molehills, they put out about 200kg of soil a day but this is spread out over a large area, the more there are of them the more condensed the damage is and looks like there are thousands of them. Once you start knocking them off you will notice that the damage get's more spread out and sporadic because the Mole doesn't have time and needs to cover all of it's territory in the hope that it crosses path with a member of the opposite sex, breeding takes place at a breeding site and these have been in the same places for generations. It can have a territory that takes it 3 days to get around. There is one Male to 4 females on average and what is happening is they are constantly expanding their territories untill the females are inseminated and as her pregnancy develops she will recede her territory and return to her permanent smaller area to give birth and nurse young, this is why idiots swear their solar powered Mole scarer works in the summer, it doesn't she is no longer there! Then mid summer the young are driven out and will start to occupy existing territories or invade new and the whole shit show starts again. There is certainly a lot of mis understanding about Moles I wish I was a better film maker with a drone and could make a documentary of exactly what is happening.

People without moles may think catching moles is bad. WE have moles. They make a mess and are actually dangerous for livestock. A pony or sheep that is unfortunate enough to step through a soft spot can actually break a leg if they are running and step in wrong. We have a dog that is terror on moles. He goes nose down and kills them regularly. No worries about a sheep or me accidentally stepping in a mole hole after that, because we can both EASILY see the giant cavern he has dug in order to catch that little mole! LOL BTW... my son is in shorts year round here too and it gets FAR colder here in Missouri than you all ever get.

I’m a mole catcher with many years under my belt and have always used the old was of hanging the moles on the farmers fence for proof of catch record and depending on where I’m asked to catch I’ll never hang moles near a public footpath for the upset it may cause some people who may not like the scene, I’m always careful this way. I live in a small North Yorkshire village and in the ten years I’ve lived here I’ve never ever had a problem and always got on with my neighbours. But until today when I had done my rounds and gone to hang the days catch in this particular field every mole that I’d caught had been removed and thrown in every direction within the hedge rows and in neighbouring garden hedges and even some thrown up in high garden conifers. I was sickened and to be totally honest absolutely bloody fuming as this is my main income during this time of year and we all know how much per mole is charged! Fortunately I had my two Labradors with me who between them we found 22 but I know for a fact there were many more somewhere. This has had a really big knock on me and I phoned the landowner who again wasn’t happy and finger started to get pointed but proving is another. But the only person I could think who has access is a neighbour who I’ve known since moving here and we’ve always got on but I went to see him and asked the question and he admitted he had done it saying it looks barbaric to which I said he had no right whatsoever to do what he had done and the money that I may have lost due to his actions reminding him that he only has the permission to enter the field to do his hobby of the weather and that is it as he enters the field to see if he can see various distant hills and that I’d never display any catches that the public could see and to leave well alone. I never ever expected this person to do anything like this ever. But I don’t mince my words and warned him that if they aren’t put back by the end of play tomorrow he’ll be getting a bill.

I never use gloves when setting traps I always rub my hands in the soil first before starting to dig the run and rub the traps in the bit of turf that you have removed to put the trap in. But I avoid setting traps In frost as the ground can obviously freeze then the trap won’t spring. Yes and bury the traps fully for as long as possible a week or so to get any scent off. Everyone has there own ways but think that rubber gloves have scent. Using a spade handle can also carry scent just use your soiled hands, And worms if I come across them I’ll pull them into bits and lay them where the trap is as moles love worms. Hope my way helps you a tad.
