Singer 700 Series - Basics Part 3 - Straight Stitching Functions

The Singer 700 series sewing machines have a number of capabilities when it comes to straight stitching.
These include the standard abilities of a machine of this era but also temporary stitching such as fast basting and chain stitching.
Out of the four models I own, the 760 is the only model that supports fast basting.
Basic thread tension is covered and how to identify incorrectly set tension.
There's a straight stitching presser foot and throat plate for delicate fabrics.
Some other basic functions are covered such as raising the presser foot even further to accommodate thick work and using the edge guides on the plates.
There's also many other things that can be performed when straight stitching, such as binding and hemming.
The 700 series Singers are precision made in Germany and are beautiful and very functional, not to mention easy to use.

Thank you for posting these I just received a 760 that had been sitting up 20yrs since the gentleman's wife passed away, he passed away 2-2020 and their daughter gifted it to me. I have never had such a great machine that had everything it was originally sold with.

These machines are the only ones that make tailoring basting and slow stitches or markings with this needle technology that penetrates the fabric every 5 points and then remains fixed while the whole machine is in motion ... It's fantastic! They look like bastings made by hand as in haute couture, but being able to do them with these wonderful machines, the work of making clothes is greatly facilitated, it is speeded up, thus becoming less boring ....

Well some other Singer Machines also have the mode of basting. I have a german version of singer touch tronic - singer futura and it does basting as well. But my mom’s old german Singer 760 is so amazing with all the accessories, cam discs, mechanically made decorative stitches and all the ‘heavy duty’ features that make the machine one of the best products ever created by Singer engineers.

hello, I am ever so grateful to your videos on this series, truly helpful. I am new to sewing and got myself a Singer 740, may I ask your advice on something please? I want to sew double piping, is there a particular presser foot which I can buy and apply to it? thank you

Very informative series, just need to point out that the needle plate is graduated in 8ths of an inch so 4 is 4/8 i.e. 1/2 inch and as you say 5 is 5/8ths which is ~15mm. I wonder if Singer ever made metric needle plates for these older machines?

Io psseggo la machina da cucire 360 singer hanche se lo adoperato non molto ma adesso avendo rotto lago e veloce non riesco piu ha far funzionare laa bobina del filo la machina cammina ma non prende il filo dal rochetto ho messo nuovi anche il porta rochetto ma niente di ditecosa devo fare ???in italiano x favore

Please please could you make a video about the feed dog, it seams like my feed dog dies not go on the surface! 🙏 and also one with the buttonhole feet, i can not switch the zig zag funktion to the buttonhole funktion, it seams like something is blocking the buttom, i mean the left wheel over the letter „I“ thank you for your amazing videos 🤷🏽‍♀️

The rubber coating may have come off the feed dog and the feed dog will need replacing if that's the case.
