I realize this video is several years old, but my wife bought me one of these things today. Like you, I hardly ever read the instructions. Today was no different, LOL! It took me a couple of minutes to figure out the orientation of the batteries, but the thing still wouldn't work. I decided to plug it in, and it worked. I started looking at the machine and noticed there was a sliding switch to select battery or electric. I unplugged the cable, switched to the battery side and it worked. The machine worked but the thread just pulled out of the material. Looking at your video, I now know about locking the thread. Silly me! The problem I am having right now is the thread came out of the needle, and I cannot figure out how to thread it. I am trying to locate the needle's eye, but my eyes aren't what they used to be. Thank you so very much for your informative video. Your presentation was fabulous!!!
OMG this presenter is adorable and very down to earth! I love that she included her "don't forget to lock it!" more than once as I would totally be doing the same thing! LOL Very informative and entertaining both!
Thank you! I just recently found out about handheld/portable sewing machines and I want to start upcycling and make customized clothes as a beginner. Your review was thorough and I'm happy I found your channel!
I bought the same model branded for Sunbeam at the 99 cents store for 5 bucks today. I did the same thing where I didn't fit the batteries in right and then went about counting all the different parts before trying again. Your video did a great job of explaining the stitch and how to tie it off at the end, thanks for that!
I have been using the handy stitch for ten years. When you end your stitch, pull thread (about 3 inches) from the bobbin, then through the tension disks, then through the needle. It makes it much easier to have the extra thread at the end. Also I believe there is someone called The Seamster who gives a great youtube demonstration on how to tie off the knot. I wish he was around when I first learned!!! Any way,I really enjoy using it, especially when I travel and cannot bring my full sized machine. I have even made what I call 'in a pinch' masks with it.
I'll have to go check out that video...this handy-stitcher is so frustrating to try to use. I can't keep it going in a straight line and when I get to the end it pulls the stitches out. I'm thinking it's easier to do this by hand with a locking stitch and just take a month. Least there won't be holes in the walls...
I've had this exact machine for years and only used it twice because I was getting irritated with it. Mine didn't come with a bunch of bobbins or even thorough directions. Thank you so much for doing this review because you explained a lot of things I didnt even know. Now I can use it again instead of hand stitching all of my donated masks! 💯❤
My mother purchased this years ago when my son was 6 (he's 21 now) and he ripped his pants from the groin area to his rear end😑. I didn't sew (my mom & sister did), but she gave me her hand-held sewer by Singer. I was able to stitch-up my son's pants including another pair and I was happy with the results. The only downside to the hand-held was it's not left-hand friendly but, I made it work for me😊. Thank you for sharing and look forward to seeing more of your fabulous videos!
I just got one of these hand held machines similar to this from a thrift store. It came with that extender thingy, extra bobbins, cheap needle threader and 2 extra needles., NO instructions, no box, but the baggie around everything was still sealed. I only paid $4.89 CAD for it. Thank you for this great video.
This was an EXCELLENT evaluation/ demo for perspective buyers; I'm going to TRY one of these! I’m so glad you tried this, I’ve always kinda wanted to keep something like this in my car in case of rouge knee slits in my skirt that turn into a thigh slit for no apparent reason. Or sudden snag attacks from doorway that don’t actually appear to have anything to get snagged on. Anyway it would be great to hop to the bathroom for a few minutes and be all fixed up, but you can’t really trust the commercials, but I’m rambling, thanks your just great.
Very helpful I did not know about tying the knot after you finish the stitch! I also don’t like to read instructions so you saved this product from the trash can! THANK YOU!!!

Hello, nice review. I got my handheld machine, having never known about it before, from Goodwill as a used item & when I took it home to test out, the stitching was intermittent, iirc. It was missing stitches, not looping into itself consistently as a chainstitch. That might be why the machine got donated by its previous owner because it wasn't sewing correctly. I checked out some repairs on TH-cam & there's a hook mechanism inside, where the needle goes in, that sometimes goes out of alignment. So I opened the case of the machine to get to it, found the hook/catch part & bent it a bit around. After doing some tests, I managed to get a consistent chainstitch, but it's still not right, as it's not looping into itself, so the thread will unravel off the cloth if you pull on it. Being that this was a used machine, I found that the needle it came with may not be the original needle, so now I will have to go to the store to try to find one. Apparently these portable machines needs a DHX1 (or 24x1) size #14 general purpose needle. These needles are shorter than the common ones for regular sewing machines. Anyway, I'm getting close to hopefully repairing it. I found that these machines are the same machine design seen around the world as different brands. Mine happens to be a Sunbeam brand, while the one you tested is a Liumy, even though they look physically exactly the same. They are cheap & the hook mechanism is not foolproof, which can get bent out of position, so hopefully I will get mine to fully work properly soon. I will also look for a voltage adapter for it (6 volts, 600-800 milliamps) & I might have one laying around somewhere already.
The little flat piece with the small wire protruding is for threading the needle. The one that came with mine is a threader. Yours does seem to have a hook. If it fits through the needle eye, it's also a threader. Otherwise, I don't know. Also, there is a small, metal hook/loop just behind the needle the thread also needs to go through. Happily, I've stumbled across several good machines over the years second-hand at thrift stores for less than $50. For some items that will not easily lay on a machine bed, I think this will be useful. My mom gave it to me years ago and only now, am I checking it out. Plan to use it in a car seat upholstery project. Quilting thread is stronger, but thin and will be my choice. Your choice of denim is helpful in showing its strength. Nice energy.
This is actually a helpful review. Thanks! I want to get something to help me sew, but I don't want anything fancy, since I don't make clothes, just little stuff for my guinea pigs like pillows and beds, so nothing super complicated. And man, sewing machines are expensive! I was worried that a handheld one like this wouldn't be able to handle felt or thicker materials, but if it can do that do denim, it's good enough for a guinea pig pillow!
my mom had taught me on a singer that used a pedal no electricity or batteries but would reversing and back forward lock the stitches so you wouldn't have to tie it but thank you I have been looking at something like this and wasn't sure about buying to fix a few things. This was super helpful.
that's what my grandmother taught me to do too, and it works really well. i never tried it with this type of stitch, but i don't see why it wouldn't work.
You are so gorgeous!! Thanks for sharing a video about these machines. I've been contemplating buying a standard sewing machine BUT I don't really have the space for it and all I really want to do in the beginning anyways is editing store-bought clothes into something unique and different. Also, altering clothes to fit better.
I have a similar design machine, but it's fully mechanical, you have to press it for each seam. It is a polish machine, from 30 years ago, it came with no instructions. This video was very helpful :)
Great review. I've been considering one like this, for little rips in my work clothes. Looks to work perfect. I can see myself forgetting to lock the power button too.
I bought one of these for 2 dollars in the Philippines, it's brand new, I did not know how to use it until I've watched your video, thank you so much 🙌🏻
I make doll clothes and hand sewing takes ages but I don’t have enough for a proper sewing machine so I’ll have to get one 😄 thanks for the detailed review
hey if you’re looking for a more cheaper sewing machine I’ve got a baby sewing machine which cost around 33 pounds which is 45 dollars. I think u can get them on Amazon :)
Hey, good shit leaving those mishaps in there. Very real of you, and I think it would help us newbies, too. I mean, we either learn from our own mistakes or through watching others, right? Respect
Even commercial machines have a guard to avoid getting your fingers caught up...we all have gotten the finger caught up in the machine...glad you are brave enough to include that glitch. Good, good video!

You know I had just finished watching the documentary on the movie “Jaws” and how it all started in 1916 in NJ (actual events), switch over here and your wearing the T-shirt also a true event🤪
Thank you for this very simple and easy to understand video. My thread was coming apart (I have zero sewing skills), so thanks for also showing how to use the little tool to tie it at the ends!
thank you so much!! I have been making my own retro headbands (and buying them for very expensive prices) and I don't know how to sew one bit. I've been gluing them. THis gave me the confidence to buy one and sew myself.
Hey Angelina I'm Grateful I watched your video. I'm 164cm tall so really short. Over here in Australia finding mens jeans in my size that are not skinny jeans are a nightmare so I was thinking about getting a sewing machine and wanted to start small. So I can learn how to alter bigger jeans to my size. Good to see there's some no bs tubers out there.
Great video. I am a guy and never sewed anything before. I have to make a seat cover for a bike and I was just browsing on TH-cam and saw this. I like how you left the part where you forgot to lock the thing so we know what happens. Great video.
I LOVED this video Demo!!! You are so sweet and down to earth, easy to follow, and funny. I am trying to figure out how to use this and just came across your video. I watched the manufacturers video for my stitch machine ( It wasn’t great) but Then I found your video! Thank you. Your machine isn’t the exact brand I have. But it works the same. Except my hand sewing machine doesn’t have a lock as far as i I can tell. 😮 It has an on/off button and if you barely touch the power button by mistake it starts stitching. I’m so glad I found you on here. I will watch your other videos too. ❤
I just bought one of these tonight. I am very short so have to take the hem up on nearly every pair of trousers (pants - I'm in the UK) that I buy. I have a new pair that are narrow at the ankle and I doubt my big sewing machine will handle them where this little gadget will. Not only that, saves me getting out and setting up the big machine. When I was a child back in the 1960s I had a little sewing machine - still remember it was called a Vulcan. I learned to dressmake with that until I progressed to my mother's Singer treadle. The little Vulcan also used a chain stitch. It was also battery operated. I have happy memories of the Vulcan. I'm sure this JML machine (called Magic Stitch here in the UK) will come in useful.
Great tip!!! Depending where you are located (I'm located in AZ) my 99cent store sells a great hand held sewing machine I use daily for only $5!!! It comes with everything that this one does as well as a bobbin extension for different size bobbins
Thank you are a blast and I have subscribed! I bought for convenience and my sewing machine keeps bird nesting and I can’t seem to maintain a solution. Use a serger also so this baby is going to be fun finish off some stuff that I don’t want stitch by hand. I love the look of the slip stitch, it’s going on top. Thanks again!
I have lost a bit of weight this past year, but don’t want to rebuy a lot of clothes. So looking to tailor some stuff barely tighter. Stoked that this works.
Thank you. Had one for many years and could not get it to work; the seams kept coming out. But I kept it and I am glad I did because you showed me how to use it properly. Thank you.
This was very helpful, thanks! I just bought another brand from a thrift shop, and it came without manual, but your explanation was enough for me to get it to work. Thanks a lot! You're awesome.

Thanks for this video! I just bought one of these, and the instructions were torn in the box. (Weird!) What isn't torn is in tiny print, so your video has kept me from giving up. Thx!!
Thank you for this . I think the knot in the beginning is to keep it unraveling as you mentioned it’s a chain stitch and they unravel. Maybe just extra security
Just ordered 1at Amazon arriving Monday cuz I bought 2pairs of clearance curtain for a price of $15 the color and the fabric reall pretty but it’s super duper long like 15 feet each It needs to be shorten, maybe if I will take it to altering the price will be 4x,I am very excited hopefully it will work good, if not I’ll just throw it away, thanks for the demo love it! God bless you and family.
Thank you! I currently don't have the space for a sewing machine -- price isn't really my problem, just a very tight living situation, so this review is very helpful!
I’m working on a costume right so this was super helpful. I needed a simple sewing machine that I don’t have to take too much time messing with to Complete thanks
This is superb. I have one. Sews great. But couldn't figure out how to knot the ends. So the sewing line didn't come back out. You now have shown this on your utube. Going to have another go. Brills : )
The "little hook thing" is a needle threader. They're super cheap and available in most sewing kits (like the ones some hotels provide) and at fabric stores.
I could not thread it for life of me. Mine did not come with any instructions. It took a second to thread with the "hook." I had the thread going the wrong way, too. The only thing now is tying it off after i am finished and keeping a straight line. I guess that is just confidence to pull it with more tension/getting used to it. Have to watch to the end later to figure out how to complete it after I am done so that it doesn't just ravel loose.
I bought one of these and I've been nervous using it. Thank you for the demonstration on how to use it as I will be using it in my garage fixing seat upholstery and sewing patches on my pants since my wife won't do that part.
Lol I own one its really good for one person does about a medium size load so 3 pants 4shirts and 8 undergarments took 2 times to figure it out but for a person in a smaller place it works great 👍
Hey 👋 the reason why it’s still going when you run it is because when you push up the plate you are not supposed to push down on the top part that’s why it is still running. Hope that helps
Hi. I just got this from Amazon. My problem is that while the machine works fine, the stitches just don't form even on the demo patch which came with it with a prestitched circle
I've just started looking to see if a handheld is worth my time. This is a very helpful video; I will definitely watch more. I laughed out loud when she accidently started the machine twice
I just bought this machine and I was so nervous when I saw your caption 😂 but I’m glad I watched it your so helpful thanks so much for taking the time to share a full review on this baby 💕💕💕
Great, thorough review! I guess this is helpful for folks who have maybe arthritis and can't push needles thru material easily, but since I know how to hand sew, this seems like a lot of work to me!

Many thanks for showing us how these little machines work, the info leaflet is so tiny you cannot work out how to do anything from it. You explained simply and showed us how easy it is to use.can you buy the p,up in electric cord you can use with it? If so where from? Again thank you so much, 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
So my mother is quite the seamstress but it was something I didn't inherit. A machine is daunting to me, but this I could handle. I do a lot of theme and cosplay-ish theme photography, and if I wanted to throw together a quick dress or something to just be posed in (nothing rugged or worn out somewhere) instead of wrapping and pinning fabric around someone, would something like this work?
I appreciate this, glad I found this channel. I’ve got a small apt so I’ve been looking for something small to get me back into sewing & to help me hem (cuz I’m short) & replace zippers and stuff
I bought one. Did not pay much money for it, but I also only got three bobbins and no snippers. All of the colors were white tones. It’s somewhat handy, but getting it to tie off well is tricky. It tends to want to pull the thread back out of the fabric if you’re not careful. There were also no instructions - so thank you. Did you notice it has a power port for electrical use?
Thank you for this and even leaving in the part where you forgot to lock it. I hope it didn't hurt you. I was contemplating getting one of these, and your video was very informative, well-edited, and shot!
Just found you for the first time tonight. I laughed all through your presentation. Big quest Tion did you ever see any thing with this? I have fallen for picking these up twice then donating because I couldn't figure out how you would ever sew anything that wasn't miniature size. This opens like the size of a stapler. There wasn't room to move much of the item being sewed through that opening I love to see someone actually show some projects they were able to make or mend with this thing.
7:34 I finish my stitches like that but instead I use a sewing machine needle to pull the thread on the other side I used to use that threader thingy put it's too weak also I used that same technique to fix pulled out threads on clothes
I love you in this video. THis is the first video of yours I've watched. Your review is so helpful. Your video edits are hilarious. I love it. Thank you!!
Thank you for creating this video. I have a handheld machine just like the one in the video, but it is the Singer brand though. I want to shorten the legs on some newer pants that I recently bought. I'm probably going to practice some before trying to do this. Once again thank you for creating this video. I'm sure that if someone did a series on using one of these handheld sewing machines then they would get a ton of views because I don't think anyone have a series like that.
Thank you so much for your video love. I actually bought one online, it's still on the way, but i was still doubtful if it really works, seeing alot other videos, it only shows how to operate and the product is usable, however looking at comments people were saying stitches comes off, i was really scared thinking money went down as the shipping fee costed me way too much for the product. Well finally i am relieved that my money didn't get wasted and i bought a good product. Well, actually this will be my first sewing machine ever so super excited 😂❤❤❤❤. Thank you so much xx ❤❤
My only consideration for purchasing one of these is to use it for basting. I want the stitches to pull out after securing on a standard lock stitch sewing machine. Thanks for the demo.
For $50, I have purchased sewing machines from the thrift store too. It is best to find a review video first to make sure all the working parts are there. You can also "test" it in the store too.

my mom had taught me on a singer that used a pedal no electricity or batteries but would reversing and back forward lock the stitches so you wouldn't have to tie it but thank you I have been looking at something like this and wasn't sure about buying to fix a few things.
I bought one and had a hard time figuring out how to keep the stitches in. This video helped.👍Thank you!
I bought one of these for 2 dollars in the Philippines, it's brand new, I did not know how to use it until I've watched your video, thank you so much 🙌🏻
Perfect. I have been seriously thinking of getting one of those. I trust you so this review is important.
Yes, I didn't have high expectations but it turned out much better than I thought. 👍🏽

I have one ...it was a waste of money
I make doll clothes and hand sewing takes ages but I don’t have enough for a proper sewing machine so I’ll have to get one 😄 thanks for the detailed review
hey if you’re looking for a more cheaper sewing machine I’ve got a baby sewing machine which cost around 33 pounds which is 45 dollars. I think u can get them on Amazon :)
This is perfect. Had no idea something like this even existed until I came up with a need, and boom, this video sold me. Thank you.
Feel the same way , going straight to amazon
Hey, good shit leaving those mishaps in there. Very real of you, and I think it would help us newbies, too. I mean, we either learn from our own mistakes or through watching others, right? Respect
Even commercial machines have a guard to avoid getting your fingers caught up...we all have gotten the finger caught up in the machine...glad you are brave enough to include that glitch. Good, good video!
I have one of these and could never figure out what I was doing wrong when it unraveled! Thank you!!!!

One man's trash is another man's treasure: these are PERFECT for metalheads looking to sew their own patches!
I don’t want to buy one of these. I just love watching you. You make me chuckle. ♥️
You know I had just finished watching the documentary on the movie “Jaws” and how it all started in 1916 in NJ (actual events), switch over here and your wearing the T-shirt also a true event🤪
Woah!
Got it and WORKS! Going to be using it to make my ribbon skirts
How did it go? I was just looking at a site that talked about ribbon skirts and had many beautiful examples!
Thank you for this very simple and easy to understand video. My thread was coming apart (I have zero sewing skills), so thanks for also showing how to use the little tool to tie it at the ends!
Yeah I got zero sewing skills too.
My daughter bought me one and I’m glad you did the challenge on it. You are so funny😂😂😂 I love watching your tubes 💙💛 keep up the good work Queen
Yayyy, I'm glad you got one! I was so excited that it actually works, but I've got to get remember to lock it! 🤦🏽♀️
😂😂😂pop lock before you drop it
Pop lock and drop it
thank you so much!!
Good morning Angelina and everyone on this chat. Be blessed! Love your Jaws tee!!
Good morning! 🤗
Great video. I am a guy and never sewed anything before. I have to make a seat cover for a bike and I was just browsing on TH-cam and saw this. I like how you left the part where you forgot to lock the thing so we know what happens. Great video.
This helped me so much glad u kept bloopers big sewing machines intimidate me so I’m always buying hand held and they never work
I LOVED this video Demo!!! ❤
Yayyy, I’m so glad to help!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this.
Yayyy!
My sweetheart just seriously surprised me with one of these two days ago🤣❤. Bless his heart. This video came right on time🤗

I just bought the Singer version today and I so appreciate your video!! Thank you for this demonstration! ❤
Your personality is so cute and fun! And thanks for this video!!! I was also looking for something for doing simple hems or adjustments to my clothes
Okay, I've had this brand and I found it frustrating, but I am ready to try again. I didn't knot my thread. I don't have the space for anything bigger
Yes, it's a learning curve for sure but tying the thread makes the stitch pretty strong.
Thank you!
Thank you for the demonstration on how to use it as I will be using it in my garage fixing seat upholstery and sewing patches on my pants since my wife won't do that part.
na man it’s important that YOU play that part of sowing and stitching, get a jean jacket and patch that bitch up
Based on you personality, expertise, and integrity, I am buying one! 👍
So many unusual cool things on eBay/amazon/ali/wish I just came across a “portable washing machine” lol
Lol I own one its really good for one person does about a medium size load so 3 pants 4shirts and 8 undergarments took 2 times to figure it out but for a person in a smaller place it works great 👍
Thanks for this. I bought this a while back and couldn't find a video on how to use it. Will try again!
I just barely started watching the video but I’m really counting on you girl, mine just arrived && I really hoping to use it asap 🤞🏻🤞🏻
That alarm scared me half to death 😂
Thanks for the review 👌🏼
Sorry about that 😆
A year later but THANK YOU! I just purchased this hoping it would do what I'm needing. This video was the perfect review. 👌
I just bought this machine and I was so nervous when I saw your caption 😂 but I’m glad I watched it your so helpful thanks so much for taking the time to share a full review on this baby 💕💕💕
Is it powerful enough to sew the end of a jean where it makes the roll ?
Thank you for the video. I just bought the hand held for basic sewing, looking forward to trying it. Great video!
I didn't know how to end the seem to keep it from coming out. But now that you explained what that seem threader was for now I know what to do.
Great, thorough review! I guess this is helpful for folks who have maybe arthritis and can't push needles thru material easily, but since I know how to hand sew, this seems like a lot of work to me!

Make a "How to Hand Sew" TH-cam Video!!
Many thanks for showing us how these little machines work, the info leaflet is so tiny you cannot work out how to do anything from it. You explained simply and showed us how easy it is to use.can you buy the p,up in electric cord you can use with it? If so where from?
Again thank you so much, 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
This is awesome. I wasn't actually expecting it to be good. Thanks for posting the review!
Yes, it should work for that as long as the fabric isn't really thick.
Thanks so much! I fortunately did not get hurt.
Thank you for showing me how to use the machine. Just got mine today ❤️
Is it working well
Thank you! I have been wondering about these handheld machines for years!
Just found you for the first time tonight. I laughed all through your presentation. Big quest
Tion did you ever see any thing with this? I have fallen for picking these up twice then donating because I couldn't figure out how you would ever sew anything that wasn't miniature size. This opens like the size of a stapler. There wasn't room to move much of the item being sewed through that opening
I love to see someone actually show some projects they were able to make or mend with this thing.
7:34 I finish my stitches like that but instead I use a sewing machine needle to pull the thread on the other side I used to use that threader thingy put it's too weak also I used that same technique to fix pulled out threads on clothes
Good tip! Thanks!
I love you in this video. THis is the first video of yours I've watched. Your review is so helpful. Your video edits are hilarious. I love it. Thank you!!
Thank you so much!! 😂
Thank you pretty lady. I am thinking about buying One and your demonstration really helped.
Thank you!!! You were a God send, because, I was frustrated, and stuck. You gave me the exact instruction I needed. Thank you!!!
Yayyy! I'm so glad!! 😁
I also recommend using a eyebrow tweezer to maneuver the thread around the hook and keep it straight for the needle 😊
Thank you so much xx ❤❤
thank you so much mam . when i bought this i thought its not working properly . but now its working properly . thank you so much
My only consideration for purchasing one of these is to use it for basting. I want the stitches to pull out after securing on a standard lock stitch sewing machine. Thanks for the demo.
For $50, I have purchased sewing machines from the thrift store too. It is best to find a review video first to make sure all the working parts are there. You can also "test" it in the store too.
