I remember as a child going out salmon fishing with fishing in a 14ft aluminum boat with my father and uncle. A pod of Orcas came around the point and came right at us. A big male came so close that my father could have reached over and touched his dorsal fin. It was at least twice as long as the boat. A couple swam right under us, and a few others breached 30m away. We stopped and they swam around, so started up again and they just swam along with us for a couple of minutes then wandered off after the salmon. It was one of the most amazing events of my young life at the time. and never felt afraid. Years later my father told me that it was one of scariest moments of his life given that we called them Killer Whales at the time.
Somewhere back in the mists of time it got switched to Killer Whales from Whale Killers. The whaling ships hated orca because orca would interfere with their hunt. AFAIK there isn't a recorded death by wild orca ever. It's the captive orca you need to worry about.
They were trying to catch you for their submarine dome zoo. Where they make you jump through hoops and spin around before they toss you cheese burgers and slices of pizza.
funny idea but dolphins , toothed whales and even killer whales have soft foreheads whitch are more like shock apsorbers than rammers afterall these animals aren't realy built smacking into ships so all the attacks could be less effective than on a live target altho still quite scary
I think you are correct. What the crew was worried about was not the boat sinking, but the damage to the steering/propulsion system. Which not only could be financially ruinous, but they would have had to arrange a tow in the open ocean.
The crew was worried about the rudders because they would have had to be rescued. The cost wouldn't be ruinous. Most yatchies build and rebuild their own rudders on their own. In this case this is a company that delivers boats for a living. They would have si.ply ordered a new one, and they would have insurance to be able to sail the boat as they don't own it.
These are juvenile animals. An Orca's eyes are angled downward somewhat, to help the animal see what is beneath them. When they roll onto their backs they can get a better view of what is above them. This looks like a group of juveniles trying to play with something that doesn't understand their motives.
If these are juveniles this explains a lot. Any Countryman (or woman) will tell you that whereas adult sheep are docile and plodding, at certain times of the day, especially towards twilight, lambs will behave like young hooligans.
The people weren't in danger, at least not of being eaten.... These I'm pretty sure are juveniles, I had the same thought, I'd imagine theyve seen adults do similar things to sharks/whales and we're checking to see if this was food, had they stopped completely they probably would have lost interest and left, for the young ones it's very important to know what you can and can't eat....
this might be the same pod of orcas doing this in Spain, near Gibraltar. They travel north across the cost of Portugal. Marine biologists believe they might had a bad encounter with a yacht, while playing- and it turned their behaviour into attacking just yachts.
actually i heard it is because of the fisherboats which are fighting with the orcas for the red tuna there, as a result they manifested this behavior. They even know how to damage specifically the rudder so it can`t move anymore and since they can`t attack the big fishing trawlers (they would hurt themselves) they go for the smaller sailing boats
They damaged and sunk a sailing ship yesterday 30th of July around midnight, 6 miles off the coast of Sines in Portugal. 6 crew members had to be rescued by a fishing vessel working nearby.
When i was in my teens , I lived in a place called Tsawwassen BC , we would go out fishing in this 16ft boat and every so often there would be Orcas next to boat, they could have flipped us at anytime but they just wanted to see who we were and they went back to what they were doing and we would go home because if you see them , there are no fish there anymore, but they are beautiful to watch

I sailed a FP Antigua 37 round the world. Back in the day ,we said Orcas, and whales generally, are highly intelligent. If you simply start an engine, or better still both, then they will know you are a boat. And they do not like to eat fibreglass. This most definitely worked for me. And one very scary encounter was back in my student days we sea kayaked from Mull of Kintyre 22 mile across to Northern Ireland . 3 kayaks 2 miles from land. And 4 orcas circled us and one surfaced right next to me and i was staring into its eye. It was as though they checked us out. Decided we were not food . And went down to the makerel feast that is in the North Channel. They are famously still there 40 years later. The local fishermen told us they never attack boats.
Oh wow! I grew up in Antigua 🇦🇬! We had a little cottage there up the hill from Dickenson's bay. That was many decades ago and it was magical! My Mom was getting ready to move there fir good and sadly she died from a massive heart attack at 62.

Same bunch of teenage lads as in other incidents in that area. Some have reported that if you stop the boat in the water, play dead, they very quickly lose interest and leave.
The coast guard told these yachties to do that, but they only turned off their engines and continued sailing, which is why the orcas kept going longer than they normally do. These sailors don't listen and follow instructions well.

I dont think they are protecting the straight they are just starving. The more I look into that particular pod and that region it seems like a possibility that due to lack of normal food sources that pod has started seeing humans as a food source. Straights of Gibraltar during especially past 2 or 3 years has had many people crossing it packed on small rafts/boats, many of who go missing. Its just a theory but it would explain that pods behaviour. There seems to be a very strong narrative that Orcas never attack humans in the wild but due to overfishing of tuna in the region the Orcas are starving and with other readily and easily accessible food sources I just see it as a possibility that no one seems to be looking at.

Years ago, racing on a Sigma 36 in Portland Harbour, UK we had strange banging from underneath and the rudder was hit upwards repeatedly so hard from below that it lifted on its pivots each time and the stern rode up enough to feel it - then 4 dolphins surfaced around the boat - It was unnerving how strong the impacts were - they then swam with the boat for a while, doing barrel rolls in the wake behind and by the bow. I wondered if they were taking it in turns to scratch their backs with the rudder.

Sound carries far underwater and a prop and engine make quite a racket. As you might know Orca's and dolphins use sound , echo location, to find and catch prey. Maybe the boats disturbe their hunting activities?
The rudders can produce sound too like a dog whistle. Might need to contact the manufacturer to research this. My rudders use to make harmonic noise I could hear at higher speeds.
I wonder if people will just do everything they can to avoid the truth. They are killer whales and can attack. They are like lions or mooses and humans have no understanding of them.

So most likely the killer orcas think that the human are seals floating on top of an iceberg?
This pod of orcas doesn't have that skill set. Orca pods have different hunting techniques than others. Many of them don't even speak the same dialects. So, pretty unlikely that this pod knows how to use that technique.

@@davehart7943 That is true. Long ago an orca rammed a Coast Guard boat/ship at the dock in the harbor of Monterey California. I can't recall the details, but I remember thinking that Coast Guard boats generally have hulls that are stronger than the plastic hulls of many pleasure craft.
There is a good book written by a man and his wife, who were sailing across the Pacific when whales sunk their family boat. Afterwards they spent more than two months floating in their survival raft, living on fish and turtles, drinking water from the desalination machines they were smart to make sure were part of their survival gear. They were eventually picked up just as they were drifting close to the coast of Peru. Unfortunately I can't seem to remember the name of the book at the moment.
You forgot to mention that sharks surrounded their raft and in a never before recorded event turned over on their fin side with bellies up and pissed on that man and woman . What I want to know is do sharks urinate unsalted water or salted urine ? In other words , were the sharks trying to help them or mocking them . Their story was in Sail magazine !!!
For the uninformed commenting about Orca responding to the boat's "electronics", no evidence exists to support the theory that Orca can detect the electric or magnetic fields produced by electronics - regardless of their strength. There is plenty of evidence, however, that proves they are sensitive to mechanical vibrations (ie. sonar) in the water. Boat electronics do not create mechanical vibrations in the hull or water that are comparable in amplitude or frequency to those transmitted to a vessel's hull that are created by sail rigging, rotating propellers, engines, or clunking rudders. The best Orca deterrent will likely wind up being a sonar transmitter that outputs high level signals at frequencies that are annoying to Orca - kind of like a boom box that belts out high volume hip-hop in the presence of your grandparents.
cj g sounds legit and logical... I’m guessing some frequencies/modulations/amplitude would get their interest and some would annoy them and drive them away. As you stated, I wouldn’t think electronics like a VHF radio or a radar designed to transmit through air would be detectable by any undersea creature.

@Zangief The Red They have stopped the attacks since there's way less boat activity due to the covid pandemic and also the government placed laws to stay away from the orcas. No one was injured on the attacks. You really think a boat is more important than a human?
@Zangief The Red Also, the orcas that attacked the boats were covered in bruises and scars - they were being constantly ran over by boats in the area and decided that it was enough. They were only attacking a specific type of boat because it was similar to the boat that attacked them.
These attacks are all taking place off the Coast of Spain. So it is one pod, and scientists have noticed 2 of the Orcas that were attacking the boats were badly injured, most likely from propellers. Orcas are a generational learners, older ones will teach younger ones and so on. So these attacks are most likely a self defense mechanism against the encroachment of boaters into there environment after a number of injuries.
Orcas have a long history of attacking and even sinking boats, for some reason this area of the world has gotten much worse but there are many stories of orcas sinking sailing yachts in different parts of the world. I am surprised that the Coast Guard did not advise you to heave to. It is believed that the Orcas are playing with the rudder, thus stopping all motion would hopefully make them loose interest in their toy (your boat). Portugal has never had ORCAS( and it's a Portuguese word!), orcas only appeared this year (this summer) if they stay, they will certainly be protected, like all other animals, including wild ones.

This behavior is similar to that I've seen when a pod attacks a Minke whale. They bracket the Minke and make assaults on the fins and tail until the whale is disabled. Under sail, you look like a sea creature. Bring up your auxiliary engine with prop engaged to around half power and they won't mess with you, the prop makes too much noise. I've had problems with big whales when sailing, they like to run right next to the boat, for miles. If a sperm whale pings you, you will feel it all over the boat.

Gold star. That sounds right. I can't believe all the idiots commenting, who think those people on board were in danger of being eaten.
This is unheard of. Orcas don’t attack or eat humans.
Just playing.... still, may be dangerous if the rudder is damaged

@@mrlee2192 And I read about "attack", and I think its not real attacks for 3/4, just accidents and orcas never attack or eat human in wild. And they never eat human in captivity, they suffering a lot in captivity so its why they kill in captivity but orcas don't attack in the wild.
For exemples : The orca attack on the arm of the man who caught crabs, in my opinion the orca mostly wanted to see what was in his little net. And for the others, the orcas have no doubt been angry for one reason or another. And for the best known, that of the whole family, I personally do not think it is true, if the orcas had really wanted to kill them, they would never have seen the mainland again.

Interesting I bet your the only human whose home job site and route to work doesn’t “invade” nature’s habitat
No, Earth is our habitat. They continue to exist because we will it.
This seems to be a phenomenon off Spain and Portugal and mostly carried out by young Orcas. If one gets injured by a boat, the rest will attack the boat....for a bit of revenge, but only the boat. They aren't known to attack people like that.
Maybe if you jumped into the water when they attacked rudder, you might reconsider the threat they pose.
@@Salmon_Rush_Die Why don't you tell the Spanish CoastGuard and tell them and all their marine biologists are wrong

by far the most bizarre story I have seen in a long time.
Have you been sleeping through the Covid scam ?

I've heard that the Orcas will leave you alone if you lubricate the hull with herring oil. It's supposed to be an old norwegian custom from the Viking age.
the orca whales could be dressed with great success and start loving human being they are very intelligent like dulphin.
Has Anyone checked into the depletion of their natural food sources-if THOSE are depleted? THIS SEEMS like BEHAVIOR MORE of messaging via desperation than INTENTIONAL HARM OR MEANNESS! THEY ARE INTELLIGENT but ANALYTICALLY CAPABLE? THIS IS BEHAVIOR IMO BASED ON DESPERATE...INSTINCTS!!!! I'M NOT SEEING...ATTACK!!!! OR, is it POSSIBLE they are TRYING TO SIMPLY COMMUNICATE? ARE WE MISSING A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY bc of jumping to conclusions and our own FEARS? OR they are mistaking the rudder as some kind of other sea animal to play with...
I had excatly the same experience. But while lying on anchor, trying to catch fish. The shark research centre told me that that behaviour is out of playfullnes. Goodness, but at least they can take their size in concideration!!!
What was the advice from the Portuguese coastguard? It may help others...
I'm from Spain, this things started in april/may 2020 in the Estrecho de Gibraltar and continued by the atlantic coasts of Spain and Portugal till october with many sailingyatchs(a competitive Sports sailingyatch from the spanish Navy included) the orcas involved are always the same two juvenile orcas from the same pod as marine biologist determined, always go to the rudder to bite and move It(even the whole boat was moved once in almost 360º), anyway orcas don't show any kind of interest in depredate nobody.
By the day this pod is in a no determinated area in the Atlantic and usually they don't return to Gibraltar till spring, when red tuna entries at the mediterranean sea, so We Will see what it's going to happen; It is most likely the two orcas gets bored and old for this Game or less likely is going to become an habit for this orcas' population.
Too less tuna left to bite, I reckon ....
Update: 11/08/2021 Bad news, I read articles in spanish online newspapers, the pod is stil doing the same things and not only by juvenile orcas adult animals too, It's a very strange case for marine science, so the spanish Ministry About transportation don't allow Sailboats(15m length or less) around Trafalgar Cape and Barbate in Cadiz's coast, because by the news saids 56 attacks Were reported to the rudders of this kind of boats from march to this day. Spanish authorities are going to keep the prohibition at least till august.
I did know that Orcas like sushi, but if so, the Atlantic bluefin (the largest) is a highly sought-after delicacy for sushi and sashimi in Asia-a single fish has sold for over $1.75 million! Driven by such high prices, fishermen use even more refined techniques to catch tuna. And the fish are disappearing as a result. No wonder the Orcas are irritated with the humans. Cheers.
they know we are killing their oceans, can't blame them for being ticked off ....
Yeah, okay.... They turned on the nightly new to find that info too I suppose? 🙄
even far lower order creatures understand it when their survival is being threatened. Whales and dolphins have very large brains, they communicate at length, they understand all kinds of things - do you seriously think they don't know that we're killing their oceans ?

Probably some young Orcas doing the Orca equivalent of the knock-out game, just being inquisitive and ornery.
I wonder if this is the same pod / same Orca's doing this repeatedly, or is it different groups. I'll bet this is the same whales repeating their actions.
My bet is that it is the same pod.
They aren't whales they are the biggest of the dolphin family
The orcas in this location are very few compared to the rest of the planet. They used to be vast in numbers but because of overfishing and aggressive fisherman and loud obstructive noises in the ocean there are very few orcas in this location left. The have been starved to death by overfishing and the sound from motors in the water makes it more difficult to hunt. So yes, it more than likely is the same pod, as there are not very many left in this region.
Yes, same pod of three young males

I hope you dry docked the yacht and inspect for damages before delivery to new buyer?
That is scary hearing them banging around down there not knowing what they are up to but exhilarating to be so close to the huge ocean creatures.
The claim is that these Iberian Orcas (around Spain and Portuguese) are the only ones that exhibit this behavior and there aren't many of them about 39 individuals of varying ages. It's likely the propeller of a Yacht injured or killed a young Orca and this is retaliatory behavior.
@@MuantanamoMobile I think it’s because tourists in that area feed them to encourage them to come close. When they don’t get treats they get pushy. I think this is the only area this happens in but not 100% sure.

About a week ago the orcas sinked a sailboat at Portugal coast.
Dreadful distracting music in the background

those animals dont want your loud ass boat in their water especially when they need to communicate and might not hear each other
They were probably associating the boat with someone who had done something to them in the past. I seriously doubt they perceived the boat as food.
No,
Not the vessel as food .
The people aboard ,, they would eat
Before someone mentions "They don;'t make that mistake because they're much smarter than sharks", it turns out sharks don't make that mistake either-they bite people out of curiosity, not because they mistake humans for their usual prey. Also, shark intelligence is a good deal higher than often thought to be the case.
Cristina fultz - Orcas don’t see people as food and don’t have a history of attacking people even when they are swimming right next to one another.
They are however very intelligent and manipulative hunters that will impose harm on their victims even when food is not part of their plan. That’s why I suggested they might be attacking the ship due to guilt by association.
Thank goodness there's finally respect for other creatures that share this planet. Back in the day they would have killed these beautiful sea wolves.

I saw a news report that the Orca behaviour where they're attacking boats might be in retaliation for Orca deaths caused by boats in that area.
Or they are looking for food to fall in the water. The simple answers are generally the best ones. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razor
Orcas are literally the world's largest dolphins, they love playing in wakes. You would've been better off stopping until they got bored and swam off.
For what it's worth, they might've also been disappointed your boat didn't generate the kind of wake they really enjoyed. Can imagine an orca telling the others, "hang on guys! This is one of those fast things, any second it's gonna take off and then we'll have real thing waves. Any second..." A mediocre experience for everyone. Edit: Except the viewers. This was very cool.
Did you run your engines in gear at all?

They have already been harmed. This is an unnatural pod of three juveniles, without adults to teach them how to survive. They are doomed.
Put a long piece of PVC tube in the water and try talking to them throuigh it.
