Judging from my experience I believe that the notorious overheating problem with PT Cruisers originates from the poor quality plastic of the coolant reservoir because it becomes dull in the course of time when, what you can see, is only a mark left by the coolant. This mark gives the impression that the coolant is at its normal level even when the level is very low or when there is no coolant in the reservoir. The true level or the fact that it was empty cannot be seen because of the dullness of the plastic reservoir. Most motorists will ask the petrol attendant to check coolant level especially before embarking on a long trip. Such attendants will also be deceived by the mark and tell you that the level is OK. Whilst driving on the freeway you hear several beeps and wonder what could the problem be and it can take you a few seconds to see that your heat gauge is on the red mark. You find that you cannot stop immediately if the road is busy and by the time you find a safe spot to park your car, the type of damage covered in this video could have already been caused. Chrysler are using very poor quality plastic reservoirs, in my experience and that could be what is causing PT Cruiser owners to spend lots of money on this type of problem.
I buy cars and fix them and flip them. I just bought a 2001 PT for $800. It is overheating. They spent $2000 trying to fix it. The shop said blown head gasket. They sent the head to the machine shop. They put a new water pump, hoses, thermostat, fan and flushed the radiator. First thing I did was the combustion test. Blue stayed Blue. Next I removed the radiator cap to observe the flow. It was circulating. Temp guage was 1/2 way. I understand that’s normal on these cars. Took it for a test drive. Started rising temp. Stopped immediately. Lifted the hood. The overflow tank was starting too bubble… Air pocket!!! I let it cool. I drained the fluid. Opened the bleeder valve, filled it slowly, squeezed the top hose to purge air, once all the air was out, I topped off the reservoir. Took it for a spin, overheating problem resolved. Still runs a little higher over the 1/2 way mark. I replaced the radiator cap and thermostat with OEM now it runs just below 1/2. I’ve put 200 miles on it, no issues. Car was garage kept and super clean. I called the owner back and offered him back the car for his daughter he said they bought her a new car. He couldn’t believe it, so I took him for a test drive. I now have a customer for life. I also have a PT Cruiser for sale. I’m probably going to donate it to a family. The husband went through the windshield. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. She’s a teacher with 2 children. She has no car, they had minimum insurance. Cool explanation. The combustion kits are cheap if you work on cars keep one. If not OReillys will loan you one.

This is what my mechanic is telling me he thinks is happening to my car. He thinks I have a “micro leak” with the cylinder head. But they don’t do work on that or head gaskets so they want to do some Blue Devil treatment that going to cost over $800. I asked why so much and they gave a somewhat vague answer about having to replace my thermostat (which is less than a year old, and do a couple coolant flushings. I have a (less than a year old) radiator fan and water pump. But replacing the radiator will cost as much as getting this treatment done. And the final thing that sucks is they say that this treatment is only a “bandaid” that won’t truly fix the issue. They say it’s only delaying the inevitable blown gasket.
My 05 Cruiser overheated even after taking it to a supposed professional to replace the timing belt and water pump. I finally bled the air out of the cooling system and it hasn’t overheated since. Temp rides normal even on long trips as well as local driving.

I'm having an issue again. My fiance is convinced that it's the water pump but we just fixed the water pump less than a year ago I had an issue before with a different car where it was simply the radiator cap needed to be replaced and it stopped you overheating but don't exactly know if it's the thermostat or radiator cap or something more serious I put some stuff in there to seal all the leaks and it was working fine and then my fiance drove like an idiot and it started losing water again but it's like it bubbles like it's boiling in there and then it's all coming out the top which if I'm correct when it's the water pump but usually comes out from the bottom just any suggestions would help
Hello my friend, first thing first with any overheating problems. You need to make sure the cooling sys full and free of any air-pocket. (properly bled) But also it may be time for a block test. Most nagging overheating problems with this car usually indicate exhaust gases inside the cooling sys. Also are you subscribed to the channel?
So what does the EGR valve do on the 2001~2002 PT's? Is it to circulate the hot exhaust ait back into the engine to "cool" is off? But you're saying if the exhaust is getting into the coolant?
Some may call combustion gases exhaust gases. I likely should use the term combustion. When combustion gases leak into the coolant system, that pressure could cause over heating to keep happening. That could cause hot gases to be pushed into the coolant and the radiator can't get rid of that heat fast enough. Dont forget to subscribe to the channel, thanks

Jeff if ya PT is a 2006 or higher, what's happening is your cooling fan pulling excessive amperage when in use and it boggs down the engine. Also the AC liquid line can cause this..to verify you will need to do an amperage draw test but that's difficult so I'd suggest replacing your fan..funny you ask, I'm recording a video on this very topic, please subscribe to the channel..thanks
I have a 2005 PT cruiser and it overheated one day just out of the ordinary. Luckily I was in town so I pulled over n released the pressure so I wouldn't blow the head gasket. I got the car home and changed the thermostat and bled it out. Drove it again for about 60 miles and it started overheating again. It has a new fan and it is working properly. The radiator has never been replaced and I think when I didn't use the proper A/f it may have clogged it worse..Then I realize that the PT cruiser takes a special A/f. Long story short, you don't think the head is warped if I can drive it that far? I ordered a new radiator because it has the original one and I know their only a single core. Haven't checked for debris yet between the radiator n A/C condensor
Hello my friend, thanks for watching and subscribing. Now you very well could have a restricted radiator but you could also have internal problems..Now understand, that aluminum cylinder head will not just warp because a part failed and you overheated. That mostly happen from continued driving while the engine is overheating. So im under the assumption your heater work, that can verify if your water pump doing its job. You have to have a starting point and build when diagnosing overheating concerns ok..Do not just pick a random part to replace because it relates to overheating. When or if all else fail, it will be time for a block test
Heater works fine. I checked that after I saw your video. Thanks by the way for that ideal. Replaced thermostat and radiator cap. The electric fan is only 1 year old but It works right on the money. When it overheated, I just put some cheap orange A/F in it and I let it run without the cap on it but it never over flowed. I read the owners manual and you can't use the blue stuff. It has to be orange and contain ethylene glycol because it is a 1 core radiator. It used too suck the fluid out of the reservoir but now it fills it up. I think that the radiator could be clogged just enough when you accelerate the cores have corrosion bad enough to slow down the circulation. PLZ let me have your thoughts
Are you in California?!?! I need help! Just had water pump replaced on Wednesday. Coming into my driveway today, smoke everywhere and all coolant spilled on driveway.
O noooooo..Soryy to hear this..Have your mechanic to meke sure the sys was properly bled..You have to purge all the air out of the cooling system during refill..
Mine is overheating just with the A\C on. I can drive it all day with it off and it doesn't overheat. Ive never experienced this ever on another car. If the head is warped, wouldn't it overheat even with the A\C off?
My friend that is a true sign of a cooling fan module failed..During fast driving the fan not needed so your ac may work. The minute you stop is when fan realley needed so airflow can move past the condensor, yours must not be working..Please like the video and subscribe to the channel, thanks

Just SUBSCRIBED 🤗 🤗. Now I bored a 2005 PT Cruiser and it just started overheating on my way to Nashville Tennessee airport. Everytime I was going up an incline the temp started going up and it caused the Temp light to come on. I barely made it back home from Tennessee, before I parked it, it was making a bubbling sound from under the hood. Its got a 119856 miles. Need help
Thanks for watching an subbing..because it overheats on an incline which is a load, you likely could have a restriction or no air passing thru radiator (fan). Best thing to do first is get sys refilled and bleed of all air pockets then start test..look to see if fan running when ac on, if not you have to get fan tested..that's the first couple of things ide do.
Hi there! I had the same problem with different car, during the overheating I got fresh air out of the heater. On closer inspection, I could smell a tiny bit of coolant out of the exhaust pipe. Engine's internal leak. Hopefully that is not your car's case. Good luck!

I wish you were nearby to my location out here in Cali I would use you as my mechanic or at least four local advice. Keep up the good work and thank you again.
hey guy, you gonna have to start with the simple diagnostics because this could be a number of things..Simple stuff to check is making sure you have gas in the car and you really need to know what the computer see, such as are there any fault codes in the PCM? this could lead to the problem
If you had combustion gases coming into your cooling system, the coolant in the rad with the cap off would be bubbling!!!! How are you sure it is overheating? Are you relying on the gauge? Are you actually measuring the coolant temperature at the rad? Sometimes the temp sensor can go bad and give false readings...
My friend, you right, under normal circumstances but it do not always apply to this aluminum engine..It happens any given time of the drive cycle which make them harder to diagnose..I drove a customer car for a week until I finally got it to overheat, I jumped outside of car to verify fans on, sys was full with no air pockets and themastat and radiator and water pump was new..The problem with diagnosing these is that the problem so intermittent. Now I just do block test but even then some pass..I never had a car return after a head job for overheating but I see you point.

You are who I thank for your professor-like guidance! I love it! One problem remains... the inside vent fans still aren't working. So, that just boggles my mind... Any idea what that could be?
PT Cruiser are just horrible cars, cheaply made. Most of them start falling apart before they even reach 100,000 miles. I wouldn't waste my time on one once the cooling system starts going bad, just get rid of it and don't ever buy another one.

Last year I put a new water pump new timing chain a new cam sensor sensor a new mesh air sensor the car was running great then all of a sudden I have no power I’m in the car still runs yes starts right up no issues with starting it’s just that I don’t have no giddyup and it does run a little warm after a while can Can it be my catalytic converter going bad
TY for all the information.
Cool video, lots of info and yes I subscribed. I have pt cruiser 04. I just found leak at lnlet tube going into water pump. I think I'll change tube b4 condemning pump. Any videos on that? Tks
Thanks for watching and subbing bud..No, I vant say that I do, I think ive maybe replaced 2 of those in a long time..And that was because I had the head already off..Seems fairly easy tho..Good luck my friend
Great information, bro !! Thank you !!!!
I have a PT cruiser 05 first generate we do everything possible to fix a overheating no result new radiator new house new thermostat relay one relate to nothing still overheated we find out the fan west damage he comes on and off and we don’t know when we’re driving when we do the testWe realize the fan was not 100% working right we change the fan problem solved thank you for sharing have a good day
Anibal this is a very common problem with these cars...I had one and glad it’s in the junkyard
I have an overheating cruiser that takes about an hour to overheat. New fan, new thermostat, new sensor. I realize that when It starts to overheat and I’m at a traffic light I can put it in park or neutral and rev the motor and it goes back down every time for a few minutes. What could that mean?
Same
I have a 2007 PT cruiser I have no engine codes no engine light I have low power why no giddyup
I just sold mine for 800 for that same reason
is it normal for the turbo to get so hot you can smell it in the cab on a big hill ?
My friend because the turbo will include some exhaust so they will tend to get hot. Now if the oil seals are leaking and the exhaust hot as it should, you may smell it..Look around that unit and see if oil starting to leak bud
@@OnlineMechanicTips I got one for yea went over a bump and the rear trailing arm that bolts the rear end to the body broke the body side where it pivits unbolts but the side on the rear axl looks welded on am i going to have to change the whole rear end to fix that ?
Jeff if ya PT is a 2006 or higher, what's happening is your cooling fan pulling excessive amperage when in use and it boggs down the engine. Also the AC liquid line can cause this..to verify you will need to do an amperage draw test but that's difficult so I'd suggest replacing your fan..funny you ask, I'm recording a video on this very topic, please subscribe to the channel..thanks
JT Automotive Rideshare Guru Hay ive been watching your videos and im having an over headring problem can you Email me shamecca1028@yahoo.com
It depends, do it overheat under loads? As in driving only? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
@@OnlineMechanicTips yes it does it while driving only with the air on. Yes im subscribed
That is a sigh of a restriction. Possibly at the radiator. But you still need to verify exhaust gases not getting into the cooling sys..
@@OnlineMechanicTips how do I check for gases?
A block/head gasket tester tool will be needed..I have a video link I will send you showing
mini stop at a red light PT Cruiser his blows out hot air when you take off it blows out cold air in a air compressor what be causing that
My friend that is a true sign of a cooling fan module failed..During fast driving the fan not needed so your ac may work. The minute you stop is when fan realley needed so airflow can move past the condensor, yours must not be working..Please like the video and subscribe to the channel, thanks
How do you test if a water pump is bad
Hey Cliff, good question..Im bout to upload a video on this very topic but a quick way to verify if your water pump working is to turn the heat on and see if its hot...Also please subscribe to the channel, I need your help..Thanks
just uploaded a video on a quick way to check your water pump, feel free to watch and ask any question you may have..Also subscribe to the channel please.
You havent told me what to do if i have a warped cylinder head. How do i fix?
@@pamelavaleri8025 Sorry, if your cyl head is warped, a engine machine shop will be needed to repair this..Or simply replacing the cyl head with a new one..
72% people doesn't know evrytime you replace radiator, thermostat, water pump and hearer core need to bleed the system...people just buy coolant and pour it start driving and over heating occurs. Also if you changed radiator, thermostat and water pump keep in mind to consider changed heater core and radiator sensor temp also even it still works....never my aftermarket coolant system parts you end up with problems especially with blown head gaskets.

Good luck!
And JT thank you so much for all your info. I have a 2003 PT cruiser touring edition that I got after I lost my Volvo. We just replaced the radiator and it just overheated on the freeway now I'll be checking everything out as far as bleeding it tomorrow morning.
YW my friend please subscribe to the channel, thanks
Check thermostat easy to do and check the fan if it turns on when you turn the ac on .
Also check the transmission shift solenoid to see if it’s leaking very common tranny leak there it’s under the battery tray
why is my compressor kckng on and off
My daughter car was overheating she just put in a new thermostat and still overheating and now she said her fan not running 🤦🏾♀️
Hello my friend, its likely the fan was not running at first..I would say this, that has to run in order to maintain normal temperature..What year is the car? BTW, please like the video and subscribe to the channel right quick for me, thanks
@@OnlineMechanicTips she has an 06 pt cruiser
@@othielytle7074 OK then your car has a TIPM, Its likely the low speed fan motor has burn out..If your fan do not come on when you turn the AC on then yes, its likely the fan. (not the relays on top of the fan) The fan assembly..I see you havent subbed the channel yet, can you please subscribe to the channel, thank you

@@othielytle7074 Thanks..As I was saying, if the fan not coming on thats the first thing I would get tested and done

Too My friend
Mine was a relay for fan
Un likely but keep an eye on the temp gauge

Great vid...liked...subscribed...got head off and checked....best check the engine block for warpage too...long shot ...but does happen...no use putting good cyl.head on bad block. Best to you and yours.
ding ding ding, you got that right..We not allowed to gamble like that anymore, our manager want us to replace the complete engine now when it overheats..
Where are you located please

Thanks bud..please subscribe and hit the bell..thanks
I have a 2001 PT cruiser it cranks but won't start
hey guy, you gonna have to start with the simple diagnostics because this could be a number of things..Simple stuff to check is making sure you have gas in the car and you really need to know what the computer see, such as are there any fault codes in the PCM? this could lead to the problem
That’s sounds like a cam positioning sensor
Very well could be..The best way to figure out is use a scan tool that will show camshaft RPM's because they dont always set fault codes.
@Ron Gillespie an ignition switch can prevent a car from cranking...as far as starting, not so sure
Thank you!
Now I just do block test but even then some pass..I never had a car return after a head job for overheating but I see you point.
hey subscribe to the channel for me, im tryna get it to grow, thanks

Here's the test kit you will need. You can rent it at AutoZone or any auto parts store for free if they have it available.
I agree dat pt cruisers are lemons & are well known 4 being problematic. The worst? &/or most problematic vehicle though??! Idk abt all dat doh, maybe you're vaguely referring 2 more somewhat modern vehicles? But have you ever heard of somethin called de lorean?? Ive heard about those bein fairly problematic. Anyways there's no shortage of lemons in production. At least i can say that when my pts bein a loser, it's nvr hard 2 fix & thus far hasn't bin anything i couldn't do on my own. . .
What is the name of the tester and the blue liquid?

@@OnlineMechanicTips - Luckily someone from the auto parts store knew it was the "Block Tester" and they didn't have it for sale... they only 'loan it' (for $30) and gave me the $ back when I returned it later. The liquid was just $8! And- it didn't result in exhaust fumes in the system. (After all of the work, directed by your awesome videos it was still overheating. But turns out, even though I was replacing the coolant, it still needed more, it wasn't completely full. And, the oil was low, fixed that... Now NO OVERHEATING! YAY! You are who I thank for your professor-like guidance! I love it!
One problem remains... the inside vent fans still aren't working. So, that just boggles my mind... Any idea what that could be?
You know why my car would over heat just at idle?
Hey buddy, can you visually see if the fan running while its idling? What kind of car is it?
Yea. When the car reach half the fan kicks on. And it's a 05 monte
Also check if it’s filled up with coolant and check when the car is cold
This car is a peace of cap I hate it....
If you having nagging overheating problems then yes, you have a problem. It just need to be properly diagnosed.
PT Cruiser are just horrible cars, cheaply made. Most of them start falling apart before they even reach 100,000 miles. I wouldn't waste my time on one once the cooling system starts going bad, just get rid of it and don't ever buy another one.
lol, you can always just simply not own one buddy. No need to bash out those that still drive them. Some may take offense to what you saying..lol
