When people on the Ella or Sarah or Carmen sites say "they don't make great singers or stylists anymore," I beseech them to please listen to Cecile McLorin Salvant.
What a vocalist!! What an instrument Ms. Salvant has, and what style! She sings with the kind of quiet intimacy that makes you stop what you're doing and actually listen, almost holding your breath 🎵💕
Go this band's website, click on the video and watch the only entry... This band reminds me of you a lot... They have 5 albums out... I discovered them by accident while opening for another band back in 2001. www.deadmeadow.com/
First time I've ever heard her. She has such a sweet sound coupled with an intense driving pulse that carries you with her. I hear a little bit of Sarah and a little bit of Billie. And that ain't bad.
beautiful song and interpretation of the lyrics and above all her tecnique is very good, this allows her to get to this performance. I am spending hours to get to those breath and sound control ,she just does it!! Sometimes,I wonder what God has in mind in the distribution of gifts. Cheers to Cecile!
I saw her perform in Paris in 2018 at the "Café de la Dance", a small venue, and was stunned by her professionalism. Everything she does here (accents, vibrato, voice changes...) is well-suited to the tune. Sometimes we can hear Sarah Vaughan', but the first name that came into my mind was Betty Carter... I know she won the Thelonius Monk award at 20 (with prestigious jurors as Jane Monheit, or Al Jarreau). This Haïtian/French vocalist has a refreshing effect on the jazz scene...

I love her voice. I am not exaggerating when I say that her voice is the reincarnation of Billie Holiday's voice. I also hear a lot of Ella. Can't wait to hear her singing Strange Fruit.
It's great when younger people can find a voice or other musical talent in the past. You can't really hide mediocrity with synthesizers and such in these genres. Sooner or later you're going to have to show what you have, unplugged, which tends to kick all the posers to the curb. This young lady could sing with nothing else around her and hook you.
Can somebody tell me the genre this is? Is it jazz? if so what kind? There are some many different forms of it so I can't be sure. I've never used this many question marks before lol
Deion Frizzell It can't be all bad then!!..8-)......I will confess I that all my blinkers go up when it comes to rap and hip hop...I class it all as the same (but I dare say it is completely different to each other) but hey, I'm 54 years old so I aint gonna change my mind now!
Deion Frizzell Check out a track by Gregory Porter called Musical Genocide....it sais it all!!....................and then check out the rest of his music...the man is a genius with a voice sent from above!
+Cybrmynd Te Hau Not sure why you feel the need to use such an aggressive term as "ignorant". I expressed an opinion as to my taste in music that is all, and no one can accuse me, or anyone else of "ignorance" because ones taste in music, as with all arts, is and can only ever be purely subjective. There is no right or wrong. The fact that I do not like either of those genres of music is my choice and no one can criticise me for it.Furthermore the fact that "Herbie" (by the the only Herbie I know of is Mr Hancock but do feel free to enlighten me of another if it massages your ego to do so!)" made a hip hop album, is totally irrelevant.........Tony Bennett could have made one for all I care, becasue despite my love of Tony's music, if he had, I would hate it too...I do not follow individual artists with blind faith..I "judge" each piece of music on it's own merit. As for your objection to my expressing an opinion (not a judgement) on hip hop and rap (or anything else for that matter) if you do not like people expressing an opinion that differs from your own I would suggest that TH-cam is not the ideal place for you to spend any of your leisure time, and may I also add that it is somewhat ironic, given your last sentence above, that the only one passing judgement here is you!

her phrasing and musical choices are excellent...and her voice is so smooth ...like honey pouring ....
Loving every moment very nice she’s so special.

I hear Billie, Ella, Sarah, Wow! It is great that Jazz will live as long as such young geniuses rekindle it in their soul.
I feel the same about her voice
Well put!
I hear Betty! Love this.
so true
When it's natural like this , less is SO much more! Totally lovely!
The whole thing is excellent. Rodney Whitaker's full length bass solo really got my attention.
i really dig the arrangement of this tune. very elegant
Beautiful thank you so much 🎶🔊🎹🎸🎙
Cecile and everyone on this recording is masterful on this, one of the best ballads ever written. Thank you Rodgers & Hart

Now I know what time it is. She's great!
WOW, Such a Breath of fresh Jazz Air💙
Her voice gives me life!
First time I've ever heard her. She has such a sweet sound coupled with an intense driving pulse that carries you with her. I hear a little bit of Sarah and a little bit of Billie. And that ain't bad.
I've been waiting for someone like this. Beautiful!
The real deal! Kudos to all the musicians. Love her voice and coolest.phrasing.ever! Great solos on bass and piano.

A fabulous Lady singer and such tasteful backing.
She is amazing! But can we take some time to acknowledge this jazz trio? I gave me an imediate stank face, super tight and creative
Nice...the sublime...creating aesthetics not heard since the pioneers Ella and Billy! Very talented! Thank You!!
WOW!!! Was NOT expecting that voice and phrasing!!
What a brilliant groove! ❤
Sarah is somewhere smiling about this musical jewel. 💕
Hauntingly elegant, and joyous at the same time. Beautifully done!
A beautiful voice and great style.
i repeated this song when i was on the plane, and you could choose this music to listen to

This reminds me of my mentor Quentin Baxter, who plays with Rene Marie, and always had me checkin out Herlin Riley.
I love her voice. I am not exaggerating when I say that her voice is the reincarnation of Billie Holiday's voice. I also hear a lot of Ella. Can't wait to hear her singing Strange Fruit.
What is left to say when the voice is more beautiful than the piano.Sing lady Sing lady ,lady Sing .

She reminds me a lot of Sarah Vaughan
Nice
I imagine the White Glasses is a certain "signature."

a Rodgers and Hart song from the show entitled "Too Many Girls"
so I guess its a jazzy show tune. This rendition is better than Ella's in my opinion
It's a jazz version of a popular tune by Rodgers and Hart. Swingin'!!!! :) I'd call it a medium swing.
it is authentic jazz
+montse lopez bop
Standards jazz
Jazz is back!...Please Lord let it be the end of the musical abomination that is hip hop and rap!!
Here here...I second that!

+NYJALB I guess ill be judging those who make broad brush strokes about any genre of music till the day i die. thank goodness for free speech!
Does anyone know the chords for this version ? :))

Kind of like a beautiful cross between Betty Carter and Doris Day.
plus je l'ecoute plus je deviens fou de sa voix et de son style
私の生涯の曲です。
Hint of lilt in her voice...think Joannie Sommers
