I'd never heard of her before. Then just now the local jazz station played her album version of this tune. Instantly captivated - love her dynamic mix of smokey depths and sweet highs - had to look her up, and here I am: her newest fan. And Mr. Keys (Aaron Diehl according to Harold Jackson's comment and Bing Search's confirmation) - yes sir, that's the STUFF.
The level of jazz back then was absurd! Nat Cole, Natalie Cole, Dave Brubeck, John Coaltrane, Bing, Chet, Evans, all the badass’ have passed! Except Herbie Hancock!!!
There’s just a little bit of silly here, allow me to point it out please. There are many truly great jazz players active right now. Creating, vital, performing, educating… Not only the brilliant Cecile. Sure, it’s understandable to idolize & practically worship geniuses of the 1950s-60s. And I bet back then, many folks were saying “there just aren’t any great jazz musicians left. No one to take the places of Earl Hines and Sidney Bechet!” - and yet, the sun rose for another day and great players appeared. To name a few contemporary greats: Bill Charlap, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Pat Metheny, Steve Bernstein, Joe Calderazzo, Kurt Elling - feel me? Quiet mic drop... sh’poom!! Please note, I enjoy spirited debate. I’m not hating or attacking anyone, just hoping for a conversation. I’m from New York, we are respectfully blunt.
"Grand to be alive..." to witness the rebirth of what was almost a long lost golden era in Jazz/Blues. Girl, I had lost time too but oh what a lovely and sublime time this is to hear and see you and your GRAND voice! Goosebumps and simply breathtaking!
Let's just put it this way... I saw Cecile's early show in Denver at Dazzle Jazz and right after her show was over I hopped in line to see her last set, money in hand! No regrets! No two songs were the same and the feel was different. She saved the challenging material for the final set and opened with the bright and lively standards. I'd never done that before.
To me, Salvant is one of the jazz queens. She up there w Sarah Vaughan and Anita O'day. If she was around back in the 40s/50s she could have held her own
Astonishing anyone would give this a thumbs-down! Ms. Salvant's presentation... well, I CAN'T do that! I wish I could! The troubles in childhood, I kept silent, studied, wrote the books, sent them out. BUT THRU MY LIFE my mind's sanity anchored to the Great American Standards, Musicals. Hard to play favorites, but "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" rises into top tier. I love her & THANK YOU Mack Avenue. Have shared on Twitter. I mention this song, what it means to me, at the end of my "Leaving Neverland" video. Continued successes. TONS of love, from Reno.
I just had the opportunity to see Cecile at Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival - and this was my favorite show in 4 yrs of attending this festival. All I could think was that this must have been what it was like when people first heard Ella Fitzgerald. You knew you were in the presence of someone very, very special.
I've had those same thoughts! Wonderful and I am elated that I can see her in person! I love Aaron Diehl and what he does with the piano too! I must mention Paul Sikivie and Laurence Leathers who are great too!
This is one of the greatest interpretations -- the pianist is like the ticking of the clock whose time the singer doesn't know. What a stroke of genius! And she picks up the rhythmic game in the final verse. Oh, and her voice too. This was the first thing I heard from her years ago, and definitely not the last.
Brilliant. Listening to her is like listening to three or four singers take turns. Her voice goes low and almost operatically rich, goes high and playful, verges on sprechgesang; she bends notes and then allows some to float with the purest classical precision. She is a diva and yet there is something very intimate and immediate about the way she sings.
2014 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album Cecile reminds me of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday & Sarah Vaughn, fiercely unique and God bless...ohm, and luuuuv her signature white frame glasses!
just found out about Cecile - watching for first time. now THAT is who u call a Jazz singer. tooo many ppl out there calling themselves jazz singers aint happenin', lol. her timing, bending of notice, improvisation, all in keeping with time - very very Nice.
Love her treatment of this oldie but goody. And I love how we can hear the tamber of her voice in the total range. Supper job. And love the story of how she started her career in France. ❤
Look no further for the 21st century's best female jazz singer. Remarkable instrument like qualities from her voice with playful and mature interpretations of new and old material. Just when you think nobody can beat the greats for intonation, styling and delivery, along comes the new queen of jazz .
Tutti i miei preferiti suonatori e cantanti jazz sono ormai morti meravigliosa questa versione della canzone cantata da Cecile, meravigliosa l'esecuzione del pianista.
Terrific voice and a great band. I've grown up listening to rock but I've become more drawn to jazz as I've got older. This is just marvellous. Thank you. :)
Great New Yorker magazine article (May 22) on this amazing singer. As a long time, and I do mean long time, I found it so delightful to see a great new jazz singer with her own interpretation of some classics. Made my day!
After being awed beyond belief at her performances; reading the facts & background dedication given to her music, substantiates the fact that "She IS an Awesome and Original Jazz Singer!" Her originality is delightful.
Yes, a lovely piece of writing from Fred Kaplan. Interesting, the twists, turns and roadblocks in life. Cecile McLorin Salvant, in the early stages, did almost everything she could NOT to be a jazz diva! Thankfully her prodigious talent, and support from wonderful people at crucial times, prevailed. Always makes me wonder about the lost genius of those for whom the dice rolled the other way.
Some of Ella's essence floated into the cosmos....wandering , searching for a vessel worthy of her talent...then after a lengthy journey ...found Cecile....
Dare say no one in the history of jazz is greater. Ella and Billie are her peers. The comping on the piano is brilliant too. Will have to see her next time she comes to Jazz Alley.
We were in Burgundy this past week. I heard her in a lengthy interview/ discussion (in French) on the Radio-France station "Musique". She is an articulate ambassador for jazz and a great practitioner of her craft.
Heard this voice this a.m. on "TODAY" and have since added her to my Pandora Radio favorites. It is refreshing to find a young voice I can understand, and enjoy !
I'm sure they do have them, check around, even in local pubs there is sometimes entertainment. Put-out a local FaceBook request asking friends for info. OR, do a "Google Search". You might need a ride, but those are available for free or at low-cost, and you probably know all this already. LOVE- D
Omg this is life!!!! Everything and the pianist is everything he has that Art Tatum thing going on a hell of s good accompanist he puts flowers under her singing not a lot of embroidery beautiful
Grande voz, é primeira divisão, cada dia más esta voltando um jazz refinado, com cantoras como Cécile...PARABÉNS!!! estou feliz por isso, com tantos medíocres ganhando dinheiro...você é um extasie musical.
Nice arrangement. Aaron's solo was really good but 2:37-3:05 in particular was hip; he is an impeccable player. And that anticipated backbeat is euphorically cool.
Cecile deserves all the praises that she is getting! She is a major league vocalist. We needed her in these stormy days.
Even more so now.
@@paradoxicalcanons Why? Does she have problems?

I thought all my jazz idols were dead. And then Cecile Mclorin Salvant shows up.
Agree!!
The level of jazz back then was absurd! Nat Cole, Natalie Cole, Dave Brubeck, John Coaltrane, Bing, Chet, Evans, all the badass’ have passed! Except Herbie Hancock!!!
BelAge totally agree
No dispute there, she's amazing.

This woman's voice is pure perfection. Billie, Sarah, and Ella would be proud!
Agree!!
Cecile carries the torch forward into a new era... doesn't she?!
@@kevinb3812 She certainly does.
it's uncanny but she does pull that blend off!!
@@kenkovar2647 She does and does it well.
Jazz has needed a female voice like this for awhile now. Pure class!
She is fabulous and Aaron Diehl is on fire
Beautiful!! Salute to the piano player and rest of musicians. Staying in time is no easy task.
😂 it’s literally their job
This woman's phrasing is amazing!
This sounds great, marvelous and awesome. I think Cecile and her high-quality musicians have reached the top here.
Cecile, It is grand to be alive to hear your voice and see your cool, calm, class-filled style. You are absolutely beautiful in every way.
I hear some Betty Carter phrasing here! I'm loving every note! And the piano solo was beautiful and compelling.

Pure class and sophisticated! This Lady is Jazz!
and she's wondrously so young...

Can u kindly explain me what’s mean he anticipated backbeat?
@@josueacuna535 Backbeat meaning beats 2 and 4. He anticipates them by playing eighth note earlier.
So talented, I love it! She reminds me of The Divine One aka Sassy, the legendary Sarah Vaughan...
A unique voice - sometimes rings memories of the sonority of the late, GREATEST Sarah Vaughn
Beautiful. Tasteful. Classy. It's too bad this isn't more popular than all the crap of every top 10 list out there
That is Jazz for you my friend, it tends not to fill stadiums, but really moves those who listen.
Next to Ella, Sarah Vaughn, and a couple of others, Cecile is one of the great lady jazz vocalists. The sky is the limit and she soars.
I'm a new fan. This is wonderful.
