- I now have a few videos up that involve fly design, so I thought it might be a good idea to produce this video to act as a reference for them. If someone wants to get a bit deeper into the intricacies of getting wet flies and streamers to swim well, then this video should be a decent reference point.
Here's a list of the videos mentioned in "Designing Streamers and Wet Flies":

This is SO Helpful, and rarely discussed. Thank you!
Thanks Peter, I can't tell you how many times I've asked fly shop staff about Eye up vs. Eye down hook performance only to get a shrug and mumbled response of uncertainty.
Now I get it. I knew the designers had a purpose but the information was seemingly lost along the way. Also explains why bomber hooks are eye down.
Now I feel justified paying more for the beautiful salmon and steelhead hooks !
Super interresting👍🏻
Thanks Peter for your tips on how to tye various flys I live in Scotland your tips are so helpful there's no right or wrong way you are right tyin
g a streamer on a size 14 hook if it works thats ok 😊

My friend that uses conventional fly rod uses a very long leader and fished the Eel river usually in deeper water has a very long leader 15 ft or longer and catches a ton of fish, then when I m trying skagit rods that use a 3 ft leader is laughing!!!
So would the same thought process apply to an down turn eyed hooks
In the "Downforce Flies" video there's a frame capture from a video that shows the difference in the ride angle of a down eye hook versus and up eye hook. As a consequence, the down eye hook version tends to ride higher than an up eye hook.
My blog post from 2015 that explains it in some detail:
