Hi Andy, always a pleasure to watch you fish. I have not used streamers as almost all my river fishing is done to competition rules and I dont get much pleasure fishing on rivers as I live in Essex but I can see the value of streamers in dirty conditions. Many thanks for all you do for us. Iain Fraser.
Great vid Andy - and nice fish! I streamer fish often, and find that casting across the stream, maybe slightly upstream produces less lost fish. I understand and agree about a trout being suspicious about a fleeing baitfish swimming upstream, but contact is everything when streamer fishing, and having a good connection to the fly trumps everything else. Keep up the awesome work! 👌
Hello Andy, Actually I think you did the streamer thing pretty well in tough conditions. One thing I have to say about tossing them upstream. I have seen it work and I too have a friend that has had success spin fishing that way, but most of the theory I've heard regarding that is that bait fish usually don't flee downstream toward predators which are usually facing upstream. In Alaska (and other placers) I have tossed tons of streamers and for me the most consistent success has come from the old across and downstream presentations. Line control and depth also trump retrieve styles. The main thing in high colored water I believe, is to get it in front of their face! Looking forward to your next video. Always a favorite, thanks!
Your leader combination is interesting and makes sense. Here where we fish in BC and Alberta, we fish in quite different conditions though sometimes we can find the slow calm waters you get to fish there. For most of the streams and rivers here, they are fast, freestone or pocket water. We have tried a number of combinations ourselves in those conditions. We use a very simple combination of a 9' tapered leader to about a 4x tippet then we can add three feet of whatever we need tagged on the end. That's us up here, we simplify to perfection as we go! I think we get antsy when we have not got a fly in the water so we get it done ASAP😂
Thanks for making the video and posting it. I know it wasn't the greatest of days, but I still enjoyed it, and that was a beautiful Brown Trout. I have to admit I also drove home in my waders the other day, as I'd fished till dark and the temps were plummeting towards freezing. On a related note, I have found that when the water is cold and high the fish seem to take a micro jig streamer fished euro style much more readily than a traditional large streamer being swung. What do you think Andy, could this be true or am I imagining it? I'm looking forward to the next video - hopefully it will involve a nice warm spring day and a big hatch of mayflies!
I think that's really going to depend on your water clarity and temperature Tom. If there's little prospect of them being able to feed on nymphs in the riffles then the fish aren't likely to sit there, making the euro style less productive. If the water is warmer and the fish have moved to the feed lines I think you've got a better shot on the euro stuff then. Does that make sense?
Keep up the good work Andy….the Taff in South Wales is doing the same thing….just as it drops enough to look promising it pours down again. Can’t wait for April and the strangely named “March brown” hatches start. I will be trying some streamers in the meantime 🎣🏴 18:30
This is the sort of video I like because these are the conditions I'm often up against. Tomorrow (25th) is the start in Yorkshire and the rivers I've access to are all up and the weather forecast is wet and windy.
Match streamer size and weight to your fly line, and don’t think that all streamers have to be enormous; match your local minnow size. The beauty of streamer fishing is the fast and easy casting, you don’t have to worry about gentle landing or drag-free drifts! Bang it down near the bank and rip it back like a terrified minnow. Doesn’t get much more fun.
Great video again Andy that type of water didn't bother me when trout fishing years ago used to fish the minnow a lot on the clyde and lots of other rivers you would get most takes when in middle of river or when it started to shallow up fish would chase you all way in was great and always did cast up stream to give it time to sink the fish would mostly be hugging the bottom in those conditions
Great to see real-world conditions in a video like this! Well done for persevering. I noticed a Greys Wing rod. Is that going to feature ina gear review at one point?
Thanks for posting, despite the slim pickings. It was great to see the reality of having to work hard for a fish - needed a great cast tucked in tight to the bank. Good use of camera angles too and the fast forwarding, really got a great insight of the whole fishing session. Thank you!
Great stuff. We have to wait until 3rd of April down here in Hampshire. Am just about managing to be patient. Will definitely be taking some streamers with me. The rivers are high at the moment and they've worked well for me previously in heavier conditions.
@@IBandAndyFishing I had 2 lovlely brown trout was a good day except for my friend slipping while wading then getting swept downstream and nearly dying
Andy, so brave, conditions here just the same😂🤔. I have not been too tempted. I think I might tie some flies. Love the content and how and where to fish in these challenging conditions.
There are't a huge number of pike in this area of the river otherwise I think I'd use a light wire trace because yes they definitely do, always at the wrong moment!
I fished there with you on the last day of Feb. We did eventually catch a Grayling, but as you say, trout were rising everywhere. Despite a very low river and a NE wind. I remember you saying “I hope it’s like this in 3 weeks”. It obviously wasn’t!
I'd be pretty chuffed to catch that trout in those conditions! Weirdly, it makes a nice change not to see you catch every 10 mins. You are human after all! Good video - informative as ever. Interesting that you hooked a fish on the cast of the day. It shows how the trout are deep and tucked right into the bank in those conditions. I'll try to emulate that on the Usk later today!
@IB and Andy Fishing well, considering I couldn't enter the water (river too high) and couldn't cast on 95% of the water, I was pretty chuffed to catch two trout with one of those Fulling Mill brown minky streamers with a sculpin head. Swung round and fish nailed it!
Cracking video, and that child was absolutely spot-on. If you know what I mean! Anyway, I was wondering what waders would recommend ???? Preferably I’m looking for a pair that have the shoes built in .. thank you and all the best 👍😁🎣
Thanks John! I must admit I don't know much about waders with boots built in, I tend to avoid them as the boots don't provide the support I feel like I need when I'm wading our rivers. I'd strongly advise going stockingfoot rather than bootfoot!
@@IBandAndyFishing hi there. Much appreciated for replying and much appreciated for the advice. I think I will go down that route then if that’s what you recommend. Thank you so much 😁👍🎣
It's a pretty small sample size. Plus, there was no way of me getting to that fish other than across the river. I think there's a place for all of these technqiues
ehm....streamer fishing upstream? really? Now I've seen it all ))))))))))and ppl are swallowing it by clapping their hands....Im not surprised the sport is dying here in the UK...what a shame

I think these videos, when the weather isn’t good, the river is challenging, are the best! Every fish caught is a bonus
Thanks Robert, the struggle was definitely real!
@@IBandAndyFishing my first day on the rivers next Monday-season starts later down south. Can’t wait for a couple of Brownies 😍
Best of luck to you bud, the way things are going you'll get out before us!
Lovely brownie, great looking river
It sure wasn't at it's best this time!
I cant wait to get out, been ill for a while now and get op this week . Should be back out mid April so cant wait. Love the vids Andy keep them coming

Great video and your hard work paid off. It’s not easy but you worked with river and the conditions. I really enjoy your vids so keep ‘em coming.
Cheers Roger, much appreciated!
Great video.
Could you do a fly tying video, tying the streamers that you fish, and talk about sizes and hooks?
Thankd
Your commentary is excellent and much appreciated and just confirms your methodology. Cheers from Australia

Nice one Andy. Driving in waders - Andy Buckley !! Hahaha - had a similar pike session on the Dove end feb and went to the chippy in waders.
That's the sort of dedication we need at this time of year!

Top man for tying in those conditions lovely Trout. :)
That one made up for it I think, the weather totally did me though!
Trout love a streamer pulled down stream, most bait fish bolt down stream when chased. Especially bullheads and minnows.
Nice one Andy! You have inspired me to try out streamer fishing again today. I tried last year but struggled with the casting.

Really tough conditions, great job! What size beads do the euro jig bugger and complex twist bugger have?
the jig bugger is a 5.5mm, the Fulling Mill Complex is a cone, I must admit I don't know the size

This is the Living The Dream Catch & Release net bud, we did a review a while back 👍
Notice the one fish hit a cross-stream cast, not upstream.
I tried the upstream method on the Usk. Nothing. Then I cast across and swung the fly around (fast). One pull and two trout landed!
