I hear so many people complaining about this, but I see SOOOO much potential in this pedal. give it a year or two... someones doing to make this thing famous and all of you are going to want one but they'll only be available on ebay at 10x the original price.
You don't get it. It sounds beautiful, if you are looking for that old 8 bit video game sound on your bass or guitar. SYB-5 can do very little of what this do.
Based on all the snotty comments, I expected this to be much, much worse than it was. It's one of the best synth pedals I've heard- though that's based solely on this demo. Costs too much for me to want it, for what I'd get out of it, but some absolutely usable sounds, and obviously a ton of range combined with other effects. Snobs are boring.
this would be really cool if it were $50 to $100. for those of us on a budget, $300 is a bit much. maybe this pedal is complex enough that a lower price point is out of the question. i think it sounds great!
Hi there. To me that really sound a lot like a simple, un-filtered square wave with a lot of decay, like he says. Basically, this unit seems to have some old-school sound engine like old-school 8-bit sound chips in it. So you might want to try some 8-bit (emulating) synthesizers playing a (approximated or dirty) square-wave in the lower registers. Hope this helps! Cheeers from Germany, mate!
This is like 10yrs ahead of it's time, really though people just want to sound like chiptune leads, which I think is probably possible these days, ever since the Digitech Drop pedal came out (tracks perfectly)
Reading some of these comments and seeing how many dislikes it has shows how close minded people can be. It's not like you would leave this on and Play it like that the whole time. It's their to add colours and textures to your sound. Tweak it out, run It through some other effects. I bet you can get some sweet stuff. Especially some of the more droneing sounds. Great for breaks in the song or some sonic destruction at the end of a song. Open up your mind and there are so many possibilities!
Reminds me of Korg's old mono guitar synth a bit. Although the Red Witch seems to track better there were many more tones and effects on the Korg, such as portamento, glissando, wave forms etc. Not an effect I would use often but very cool used in the right settings.
...as far as other devices i don't know that much about stomp boxes, BUT you could defintely create this sound by getting/making a device that analyses the pitch being played by the incoming signal and then sending it via, let's say MIDI, over to a synthesizer that can do this kind of sound. The last part you could even achieve with free (vst) computer plug-ins!
Trem is an interesting choice.. Would've been cool to maybe have a hi-pass/lo-pass section instead and maybe have an expression pedal input for filter sweeps? Yeaaah.
Hmmm...a little hype maybe? When was the last time Bjork had a guitarist near her? I think it was with the Sugarcubes maybe in the very early 90s? But lets say someone does use it and kicks some ass. Does that mean all the other great "artists" will find nothing better to do than copy it? Or, are you just starting the hype now because you've already invested in one?
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...HUGE thumbs up for that one....I expected the Conchords to start ripping licks at any moment....ben and his reddy-greeny-orangey colour!!
I get your point. It's better to have synth pedals than record a keybaord/synth for an intro of a song or instrumental rather than recording it and have the risk of the software failing playing live.
The Red Witch sounds, as noted above, more like an Atari than a Moog. I have never seen a better "synth" pedal than the Electro-Harmonix Microsynthesizer, which was, I think, the first attempt at such an effect.
Another "specialty" pedal that I'm sure someone is going to do great things with, but for 99% of the rest of us, cool to play with for about a day or two.
Why didn't they put the on/off for the synth and envelope stuff on the same side as the controls? The LEFT controls are synth and you turn it on with the RIGHT footswitch... that's intuitive, NOT
Some people would describe an electric guitar, or overdrive, as "noises." YOUR necessary effects are very different from someone else's, and no more right or wrong. Drawing arbitrary boundaries is never a good idea.
Yes, Miguel. The facial hair is a dead giveaway! ;) I'm looking forward to your next upload of all the sonic wizardry your new Synthotron has inspired in you! ;P
@unhandledException1 It's useless in the context of this video, yeah. The idea of the demo was to show what it SOUNDS like, not how creative you can be with it. I'm sure there will demos and reviews in the future when it is actually released and readily available that will showcase its musical sides.
Honestly, I don't get why more guitarist don't go for this kind of thing. I've seen a handful of bands play nintendocore and dance/electronic stuff live. When it's an actual band playing, instead of some random dj just playing a song, it becomes very interesting. Hell, I normally play death and black metal, but the more I hear this stuff the more I'm drawn to it.
Well luckily for Jonny Greenwood, he's in a band with school friends he grew up with that have hit records. Those of us who are hired for our skill to perform in a classical scenario which does not afford us the opportunity for improvisation are not so lucky. I know every guitarist under 18 knows everything already but consider the possibility that FROM AN EFFECT PEDAL, CREATIVITY COMES NOT. Rather, it can inspire new ideas and directions minding that they remain MUSICAL ALWAYS.
Its not really my type of pedal, but i guess people like Foster The People and St. Vincent would have a really good use for this pedal. As for me im a straight rock/fusion type of guy, but that doesnt mean i cant appreciate a great new device.
Technically speaking, noise is not an option with this synth. Noise was a common part of older analog synthesizers. They were labeled as "white noise" or less commonly as "pink noise". I don't agree with your idea or meaning of noise. I also don't think any effects are "necessary". You can either play or not, with or without effects. However any effect is fair game if used in a musical way.
all of you saying that this pedal's useless and horrible... think of it like this. it's the kind of pedal that serves a purpose outside of conventional music. it's not really the kind of pedal that you'd leave on like a good-sounding fuzz/overdrive/distortion or any other type of effect pedal (let's say reverb). you're supposed to get eff'd up, totally tripped out sounds from this pedal - that's what any synth-based device does. it's no different in function than a minimoog.
@Reality2Dream Don't confuse "CAN'T" with "WON'T". I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not....but, Red Witch is a great builder. However, some of the stuff builders are turning out these days are bordering on "unusable" in any realistic live music scenario. The Pitchfactor and TC ND-1 are about as crazy as I get with non-drive effects. If I brought this to practice my band manager would probably fire me. Like I said, this is for the kids at home who like to pretend their axe is a robot.
I get the whole tone purist thing, some people just don't prefer stuff that's too crazy. There are a lot of bands that do rely pretty heavily on effects like this, that are really good though. Give this a listen, it's pretty sweet. Not necessarily as crazy as this effect here though lol. /watch?v=Hje2f2b-0Ew
Hahaha. I actually found this video after seeing a picture of this pedal on your pedalboard and looking for more info on it. Pretty sweet sounds out of that.
Matthew Weinrich My wife must have read my comment cause that's how I got it as a gift, ha ha. Out of the box it's a bit too glitchy for me, but if you adjust for tracking and use the right pickups and play in the right position it can be pretty stable. But if you like glitchy synth this is a great pedal.
Any time you have that much on a single pedal you are going to be faced with what features it has, and what you wish it had. And tracking is always something a person has to find the best method for. But it a pretty great guitar synth pedal. I don't have time for people getting all holier-than-thou about the sacred guitar tone. I don't care how much tweed you have- there is nothing "natural" about plugging a guitar into any electronics, even just a clean amp. Its another sonic possibility.
You do realize that most guitars that have "Gibson" on the headstock are close to, or over $1000? Or that any serious musician that wants a handbuilt instrument custom made to fit their needs is going to pay between $2500 to over 10k? Go on the net and see how much a really really nice AAAA piece of mahagony for a guitar body costs. I just looked, even the US strats are $999 now....
You really don't know what I listen to. I listen to anything between megadeth to hendrix to clapton to satriani, steve vai, dream theater, al di meola, carlos santana, zeppelin, muse, motley crue, iron maiden. Need I say more?
I can't hear a New Zealand accent without thinking about Flight Of The Conchords. I hear Jemaine's voice in my head and I start laughing.
As a NZer I can tell you he is Jermaine's vocal doppelganger. It's uncanny. We don't all sound like that.
this pedal is wonderful. me want.guitar is getting colorful again.
HAHAHAH loving the NZ accent haha sounds like he belongs in flight of the concords :P close your eyes and its jemaine hehe
I hear so many people complaining about this, but I see SOOOO much potential in this pedal. give it a year or two... someones doing to make this thing famous and all of you are going to want one but they'll only be available on ebay at 10x the original price.
The look on Rich's face during the video describes it all.
You don't get it.
It sounds beautiful, if you are looking for that old 8 bit video game sound on your bass or guitar.
SYB-5 can do very little of what this do.
Awesome sounds. Wonder how it would work with a CELLO?!
this'd be great for some nes megaman covers
bret you got it going on just started playing in my mind lol
very cool pedal. Red Witch, Pigtronix, Electro Harmonix, all doing some very cool early stage stuff. This will be fun.
Based on all the snotty comments, I expected this to be much, much worse than it was. It's one of the best synth pedals I've heard- though that's based solely on this demo. lots of noise when he turns the pedal on. Is that right?
Hi there. To me that really sound a lot like a simple, un-filtered square wave with a lot of decay, like he says. Basically, this unit seems to have some old-school sound engine like old-school 8-bit sound chips in it.

Hey ! It's Jermain from Flight of the Concords!
Reading some of these comments and seeing how many dislikes it has shows how close minded people can be. It's not like you would leave this on and Play it like that the whole time. WOW FOR ONLY $300.00 YOU TOO CAN NOW SOUND LIKE A BAD 1980's VIDEO GAME!!!!!!!!!
Since when did Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords dye his hair red, grow it long and start making effects pedals?
Ok, now I want to see Ben Fulton's impression of Brett McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords (Since his Jemaine impression is flawless).
Are them pots stepped for easy recall?
The do? I have a few WMDs - pedals and modules - but am completely unaware of any synth pedal. Am I missing out on something?
When is this going to be released!!!
Since when is commissioner Gordon with Premier Guitar?
Reminds me of Korg's old mono guitar synth a bit. Although the Red Witch seems to track better there were many more tones and effects on the Korg, such as portamento, glissando, wave forms etc. Not an effect I would use often but very cool used in the right settings.

what would be a comparable pedal to this?
Trem is an interesting choice.. Would've been cool to maybe have a hi-pass/lo-pass section instead and maybe have an expression pedal input for filter sweeps? Yeaaah.
brilliant!
That one tone sounded like The Residents, Commercial Album. Check out the Ludwig Phase II Synthesizer.

@BiggSteve777 yes i know if you had read all 3 comments you'd see that we already covered that
i want it, really amazing pedal
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...HUGE thumbs up for that one....I expected the Conchords to start ripping licks at any moment....ben and his reddy-greeny-orangey colour!!
How tripped out do you have to be to actually use one of these on stage?
@bertrarious yeah I kind of agree, I think the Electro-Harmonix Micro synth would be a better choice If you're looking for Synth sound.
can this be used on bass?
I'd say this sounds beastly on bass.
Gee, only $399! lol
+1971SuperLead if you want these sounds and aren't scared of keyboards, its more like $3.99 from the charity shop.
So you only like acoustic guitars?
that's why I need this pedal :D
I get your point. It's better to have synth pedals than record a keybaord/synth for an intro of a song or instrumental rather than recording it and have the risk of the software failing playing live.
Nice looking Michael Kelly guitar! COol sounding pedal, if your into that kind of sound. Really retro Atari sounds.
If this could do more than just bzzz, bzzz, boik, boik, then I might be interested
The Red Witch sounds, as noted above, more like an Atari than a Moog.
I have never seen a better "synth" pedal than the Electro-Harmonix Microsynthesizer, which was, I think, the first attempt at such an effect.
they've got some broken toys at goodwill that sound exactly the same for about 3 bucks.
I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love the shirt!
Another "specialty" pedal that I'm sure someone is going to do great things with, but for 99% of the rest of us, cool to play with for about a day or two.
agree
Hmm then don't buy it? What was the point of this comment?
@@thomasdinkelspiel1098 To give feedback on the video. A lot of manufacturers monitor sites like this to get feedback on their gear.
@@thomasdinkelspiel1098 (But really, just to aggravate you)
@@MrTPF1 damn thanks for thinking of me bro.

I wanna drop cid and screw around with this thing
I want this, to run with my circuit bent MT70 through a superego, wow!
What guitar is that?
Yes, Miguel. The facial hair is a dead giveaway! ;)
I'm looking forward to your next upload of all the sonic wizardry your new Synthotron has inspired in you! ;P
I love it!
I have a mothership, and i'm not sure how it's better than "this here" They have different features. I'll probably get this too.
I am far more interested in the matchless booth that is in the background.

3:34 Footprints?
"red witch; step in some piddle"
...sorry, had to do it.
This thing is about as much as a Korg Microsynth. Pretty sure you know which one you're better off with.
rest assured I will forget that I ever saw this 5 minutes from now...what was I talking about?
I don't see myself ever needing one of those lol
I'm not sure how musical this pedal is. I'm not saying I would love for them to give me one, but I'm not sure he is showing my how I would use it.
