    Allen Collins, the tall, skinny guitarist wearing all white wrote the music to Freebird when he was only 17 years old, and singer Ronnie Van Zant the lyrics when he was but 20 or 21. One of the most iconic songs in classic rock history written by two high school dropouts.

    And now you know what a REAL 'show stopper' is all about. There is absolutely NO WAY that a band could play a song like Freebird and then move into their next song. It was their 'finale' without a doubt. Which is just ONE of the reasons the building crescendo takes place at the end, and can often be extended as well. It was ensured to send the crowd into a frenzy as they finished up and walked off the stage.

    Sadly, only the slide guitar player Gary Rossington and the drummer Artimus Pyle are still alive today. This concert took place just a little over two months before the plane crash that would kill lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, as well as Steve's sister Cassie, one of the backing vocalists. All of the other members were seriously injured. Since that time Billy Powell (piano), Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Allen Collins (guitar) from this lineup have also left us. This was a legendary performance, but these guys played balls-to-the-wall every time they were on stage!

    • @NS1.
      @NS1. ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Allen had such a tragic life. Barely survived the plane crash. When he was 33 in 1986 he crashed his new Ford Thunderbird, killing his girlfriend who was with him, and leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Couldn't play music ever again (which is what he loved doing more than anything else in the world...I can't even imagine), and developed a bad alcohol and drug habit. Died at 37yrs old from pneumonia due to the paralysis combined with liquor and drugs. RIP to all.

    This was actually a kind of tribute to Duane Allman, who died tragically in a motorcycle accident at the age of 24. Most times Ronnie would say, "Play it pretty for Duane". Duane Allman was the God-father of the modern electric slide guitar. He brought what was done on acoustic guitars and played it on electric. Duane was the high guitar part on 'Layla' with Derek and the Dominoes. Duane played on most of the record as He and Eric Clapton were very good friends. I never said they weren't good, I just said they played this and all their other songs the same way every night.

    • @tracyknight5130
      @tracyknight5130 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to Greg Allman. Duane started playing slide after hearing Jesse Ed Davis playing slide with Taj Mahal. He told the story on the documentary "Muscle Shoals".

    My favorite version of this is actually is the 1974 lineup with Ed King . Ed plays a short solo after Gary's intro and also plays a solo along with Allen at the end . Ed had a way of finding a 3rd part to a lot of Skynyrd songs that only a 3 guitar band could do. It also came later with Steve Gaines joining the band as the 3rd guitar player.

    If you are willing to listen to this you might also like, 'Whippin' Post' by The Allman Bros. Band Live At The Fillmore East 1971. You need to listen to them live because they are widely regarded as the best 'Jam' Band ever. Pick the version that is 22+ minutes long. If you like this well then a lot of doors can be opened. What Lynyrd Skynyrd is to precision and sameness, The ABB is to wide open variation. They never played a song the same way ever. Each night was an adventure. You could go to 4 nights in a row and never hear the same version of any song on any of the nights. Now you could tell it was the same song, but you may get a 4-5 min. version one night and 25-30 min. the next night. Any and all songs were open season with only the whim of Duane Allman deciding most of the time where it was going that night.
    Free Bird is one of my favorites too. Just because Ronnie Van Zant held the reins tightly and would not tolerate dissension. You got what ever was on the record every night. Well I stop now, until the next time.

    THE BEST ROCK BAND (& SOUTHERN ROCK BAND) OF ALL TIME! They were so talented & practiced that each band member's part of the song(s) is extraordinary! All together, they are an Amazing gift to humanity for all time- thanks to that cameraman taping & ALL their recordings. They were LIVE without any of the technology used to fake it that a lot of "artists" use today. They were all about freedom & that "Live & let live" attitude for every Hardworking man & woman. They're were raised in the poor areas of Jacksonville. I think they reach most people because of their beautiful lyrics & music tell AN amazing story in each song that we can all relate to- inside our hearts & souls. Each song is AMAZING - I love EVERYONE of their songs on EVERY album. I love watching the younger generations finding Skynyrd- being surprised, then so happy & excited listening the music. God Bless you & may you ALWAYS be able to listen to beautiful Music that talks to your soul.💖🤗👍🙏

Tall skinny fella in white is Allen Collins. When they were in the studio, they went with the first take on his solo. Can't improve on perfection. Mid '80's he was in a car crash that killed his pregnant wife and he was paralyzed and ended up in a wheel chair. Sadly he passed in '91. Please check into them deeper. Loved the reaction!! Lynyrd Skynyrd were from Jacksonville Fl. They grew up together. Their PE teacher's name was Leonard Skinner and he gave them hell about their long hair, so they jokingly named the band after him. They ended up on good terms anyway. In 1977, not long after this concert in Oakland, the group was flying in a chartered plane between Greenville SC and Baton Rouge Louisiana when their plane ran out of gas and crashed. Ronnie Van Zant, lead singer was killed instantly. Steve Gaines (guitarist with short curly hair) was killed along with their road manager and Cassy Gaines (Steve's sister) who was a backup singer. Both pilots died. Everyone on the plane was critically injured but the drummer managed to make it to a farm house to get help. The lead guitarist in white almost had his arm amputated and it was 10 years before he would ever play again. Ronnie's younger brother took over lead singing duties and they still perform today. Gary Rossington (with the slide guitar) is the only original band member left. Please react to the lyric version of Simple Man, it is their other song that is one of the truly greatest hits of all time.

    Ronnie wearing his neil young tshirt. They were squabbling in the press. Neil wrote southern man. Ronnie, in sweet home Alabama, I heard old neil sing about her, and I heard old Neil put her down, I hope Neil young will remember, southern man don't need him around anyhow.
    After ronnie died, neil said how much he liked skynyrd, wore a ronnie van zant shirt at concerts.

    Is so sad all the original Lynyrd Skynyrd have all passed away. Gary Rossington that played the slide on the guitar was the last surviving member. Gary passed away this year, ending of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band. Bob Burns was the original drummer that passed away. Artimus Pyle still living but he was not the original drummer. But Artemis played in this video. 13:52

    When I see videos like this with those "then kids" rocking and baking in that sun with this music flowing over them, I know that they won't be feeling that sunburn they are getting.... til they get home. That blonde with the yellow shorts and halter top on I bet was really hurting. Thanks for the reaction, Bre. Been some time since I've seen this video. Be well. Peace.

      I didn't find the Knebworth vid as exciting or as revealing as the Oakland Coliseum one. Kneb was sort of dark, from far away; perhaps I focused more on the cinematography than the overall experience, or maybe because I found the Oakland one first and got totally hooked.
