This is possibly the most underrated channel on TH-cam right now. I know it sucks about Dirt Everyday but you're putting out content that's just as good as far as production quality and caliber of projects go. In a year we'll be celebrating your first million subs, looking back at these humble beginnings fondly. Great work Dave. Really proud of you for keeping up the momentum.
The thing that makes you cooler than most is you arent afraid to carve your own way instead of doing the same thing everyone else does. Truly hope to meet you on the trail someday
That rig is totally rad! Love when people think outside the box a bit. Coming from the trucking world, I could totally see how much freedom of movement you gain with the bags.
Love this truck! Had a Mazda mini truck when I was 18 and probably still my favorite “custom”. When I saw yours I seriously started contemplating building another one, in a 4x4 flavor almost 30 years later - great rig and love the originality of every bit of it

My first vehicle was an '89 Mazda B2600i 4wd. My dad bought it new at the local Mazda dealer and I was lucky to have him give it to me as my first ride. It was red, sunrise red to be exact just like yours. Absolutely loved that truck! That 12 valve, 2.6 could keep up with the small V6s of the day. The 2.6 fuel injected engine was first offered in '89, and it was a MAZDA engine. Prior to that they used 2.6 carb engines from Mitsubishi in the 4wds. As an old mini trucker. I find it interesting to see a step notch and bags on a crawler. I also have a similar 4 link bag on bar setup with over 15" of travel (also running Airlift Dominator 2600 bags) on my body dropped 65 GMC project. What a cool truck you have. It's got me wanting to do one someday.
My brother had the exact same pickup (stock of course) years ago. We put some 33’s on (cut the fenders to suit) and wound the torsion bars up and extended the rear shackles to give it around about a 2 inch lift. Bloody thing was so capable and surprised a lot of people with what it could do. The engine is actually surprisingly powerful for what it is, good memories were made from that truck
Dave love this build it illustrates that a big LS or v8 swap isn’t required for a capable rig. Low buck built not bought is my favorite. It’s important to get out there anyway you can. Male memories. Lastly I don’t know anyone that has always messaged me back with great advice. I’m super lucky to have an LJ but even luckier to have had your help to build it. Love the Dirt Head shed
Of the 2 shows that I figured would be safe on MT were Roadkill and DED. The titles they pulled from YT and used to bring viewers from YT. Here’s to this channel becoming huge for you
Awesome channel, Dave. Hard to beat the value those little Mazdas offer. I have that same shirt I picked up in Moab a few years back. You have good taste. 😊
I always loved the Mazda square body style. These were super popular to slam in the early 90s when I was in HS and my buddy had a sick one with an even sicker system in it. I like the looks of this truck!
This is awesome. I'm so glad you're still making videos. I've been an import tuner guy my whole life and got into 4 wheeling a couple years ago. All my friends had triple locked land cruisers, so i bought a non running 1994 land rover discovery for $800 lol. Now it's on 35's, 4.73s, arb front and rear, 14" of travel, caged, and its all you Freds fault haha. Hopefully one day ill get accepted on Ultimate Adventure. Just in the last month i've been watching more of your channel and for my dads 70th birthday i got him a 89 4runner that had already been SAS'd, has marlin double cases, old school Marlin leaf springs, and i just did my first ever 4x4 fab project and welded in low range off road rear shock mount, tabs, and installed some old Poly Performance BBC shocks. We're heading to Hollister this weekend to try it out and my dad is beyond excited. Even just little videos like this are super helpful and help provide motivation to get out and wrench. Keep up the good work!
god do I wish I understood airbags like you do. seems so versatile. already a beautiful truck, but can't wait to see it with those "finishing touches".
@@thedirtheadshed I'm super curious about how it would work with IFS toyotas. Nate over at dirt lifestyle put long travel on his brand new taco, and his biggest issue with it is that the springs don't want to compress like they would with a straight axle rig. I feel like air ride could fix that, but I've never seen it done on an IFS 4x4. I have a 1st gen taco, too. pneumatic helper springs in the rear are common, but full air ride would be sorta revolutionary in that community.
It's been cool to see a build go through the stages from budget build to slight out of your imagination custom build, all done with your 2 hands and not by throwing money at it. Love the truck and your passion for the build!
Hey Dave, we all really appreciate what you and Fred have done for the off-road community with dirt every day! You guys got me into 4 wheeling and fabrication in a big way. I love how you guys (you and Fred) are the same dudes you’ve always been…whether you have a MotorTrend, Petersen’s, or your wife’s budget. Everyone can relate.
