  • In this video I talk about if the there really is a worldwide pilot shortage and answer the question, "Is the pilot shortage real?" I give my experiences and those of close friends of pilot jobs in Europe, South America, the Middle East and Asia. I compare the current pilot job options now compared to the last 5-6 years.

    Thanks for the info! I always wanted to be a pilot, but life and other commitments got in the way. Now being over 40, I started following my dream. Most people thought I was crazy, but I followed my passion. Now, I'm one check ride away from being a commercial pilot. Thanks for inspiring people. I'm trying to help people now to follow their dreams as well. If you want something bad enough, just go for it!

      I will check the vids out. I chose to go the accelerated route, it's been eat, sleep and everything aviation. I started with 0hrs in February 18 and as of now, I have 210 hrs. Not much I know, but just chugging along. If the check ride gods are good, I will have my com multi next week and com single the week after. Then, I'm heading to get my CFI, CFII and MEI. Just looking forward to being out of school. Thanks again!

    They could solve this "pilot shortage" easily if they were prepared to help fund the training, because money is by far the biggest barrier to just about everybody who wants to be a pilot. There's no shortage of people who'd love to do (and would be capable of doing) the job, only a shortage of people rich enough to get the training/flying hours needed.

    There’s a shortage on experienced pilots because flight school is crazy expensive plus the major airlines in the US required to have at least a bachelors degree which is also kind of expensive to get and to me that’s the real reason why the shortage is happening

    Always wanted to be a pilot! When I graduated high school my dad told me he would help me get loans to pay for flight school. I graduated from a 2 year school and transferred to an aviation college. This was probably the most exciting time of my life. At the last minute he decided it was a bad idea. It’s was very expensive and the outlook for starting pilots in 2008 was not good. I left school, got a job, and managed to get around 30hrs in a Cessna 150. It was amazing, but the cost was killing me lol almost like a drug addiction. I haven’t accomplished anything since. At 23, I left aviation behind and here I am a decade later reconsidering it! It’s very sad to think about an alternate future you wish you had. If you’re pursuing this career, I wish you the best! Don’t give up!

      the airline would fund all your training
      pay for your housing and 300 bucks a month for food
      then when you return to china they fund your type rating course
      and you start at about $7000 a month as fo on a320

    • @nodlimax
      @nodlimax 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Doge di Amalfi You seem to miss the problems a social credit system brings with it.
      Btw. I support the removal of a lot social systems because of the high amount of abuse. Removing that crap would allow for lower taxes which makes even lower incomes much more valuable overall..
      Anyway the social credit system on the other pretty will punish you if you do something that "society" (whoever that may be - usually the government) doesn't agree with. Let's say I dislike the current leader of my country and I voice my opinion online. That could cost me credits in that system and might affect whether I'm allowed to travel to other countries. Overall the problem is not necessarily the system but who uses a system for what purpose. And if we talk about China there is the "glorious communist party" that controls said system. Do you get the idea why it might be a bad idea to move to China?

    • @nodlimax
      @nodlimax 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Doge di Amalfi Then why do you need to use a VPN to actually access TH-cam (or pretty much any other web site outside of China) and write comments here? Hey if you are happy in China - good for you. I hope it stays that way. But if you are intentionally ignorant to what happens around you then that is your choice.
      Btw. you made me chuckle when you assumed I'm from the UK or a supporter of May or Corbyn...
      And also just to let you know - you have no idea what my moral code is...

    • @nodlimax
      @nodlimax 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Captain Kelsey: Thanks for elaborating and clarifying a global common concern. It would be great if you can film a video about another wide spread issue, the automation of flight decks, as in not having pilots in the cockpit. This is currently causing a major drawback and certainly discouraging aspiring pilots. Thank you!

    • @SuperBlackhawk29
      @SuperBlackhawk29 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think self-flying planes will take some time, quite a lot of time if at all we'll ever get there. Artificial Intelligence and automation on their own can be a disaster. Take the case of MCAS for example, taking control of a plane and crashing it. There was also a B-52 bomber that was crashed by a computer. Automation and artificial intelligence rely on sensors and sensors fail from time to time. Even the militaries aren't that willing to have automated drones in combat, what makes you the civilians will buy the idea soon.

    I think the pilot shortage is a self inflicted wound. Aircraft mechanics with experience are in the same boat. I've had my private since December 01 even before 9/11 pilots with low time were paid like fast food workers and less in most cases. I lost interest in the commercial side because of that. The mechanics are just behind airline pilots it just management hasn't figured it out and can't seem to understand why guys aren't sticking around when these ungrateful mechanics are getting "the privilege" of working on their aircraft.

    Funny, if those same airlines who wouldn't give low-time pilots the time of the day five years ago were wise enough to give more people a change back then, those low-time pilots would be experienced captains now and there would be no shortage. Gee-whiz, who could have thought that if you need experienced workers today you should have thought about it a few years ago.

    Hi! So I have a question about the pilot shortage. So I’m only 14 but I really want to become a pilot. Do you think that by the time I graduate from college and get the flying hours I need, there will still be a high demand for pilots?

    • @grj512
      @grj512 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are a few things to look at and these are the reasons I am getting back into the industry after 20 years of not flying.
      The US (and a few other countries) is going through a huge population shift. 80,000,000 Americans are leaving the work force over the next 18-20 years. The baby boomer generation is hitting 65 at a rate of 10,000 a day. Airline pilots are a microcosm of that population, so imagine 30-40% of pilots retiring (mandatory for ATP). Not to mention the number one thing retirees want to do is travel in retirement. The travel industry (includes airlines in a big way) is expanding and expected to double over the same time period.
      More people leaving combined with more people wanting to travel creates a double hit to the carrier industry. You could almost estimate the need for pilots will be twice what's currently leaving. I'm 49, have a commercial, instrument, was a cfi sel...I'm getting current in the next few weeks and recertified to instruct to build time and get my additional ratings. I figure I'll be ready for ATP in 12-14 months. But the opportunities are way more plentiful than they were 20 years ago.

      Consider the military. My son got his college degree in accounting joined the Navy and now he's training in the T45 jet trainer and should be flying the F-18 in about 8 months. He did not do ROTC or anything else other than start talking to a recruiter towards the end of his junior year. He did however get his private pilot's license over one summer during college but I'm not sure if that helped him or not I think it did give him some confidence
      His best friend in the Navy has his wings now and at 24 years old is flying the 737 or the military equivalent of it just get good grades keep yourself out of trouble

    I have worked for two different airlines in the US. I have been a ramp agent and a flight attendant. I have an opportunity to be in housed trained as an aircraft mechanic at a small FBO. My end goal was to become a pilot. However, I can honestly say after my experience with the airlines, it came down to three huge factors why I am considering a complete career change. First, the airlines are making record profit. The shareholders are greedy. They do not care about any of their employees and you are treated as a robot. Second, pay is overall not good. You get that bonus and make $50-$60k then the second year you only make $38k. A store manger makes the same pay and spent way less on education. The third and final is quality of life is garbage. I work a 9-5 job make the same amount of money and have way more free time! The flight benefits are not even worth it because when you get home, the last thing you wanna do is get back on a plane. I love aviation and I would settle for a little less pay for better quality of life. I believe these reasons also are contributing to the pilot shortage and not just training cost and low pay. Also, you have aircraft mechanics, ramp agents and flight attendant shortages not just pilots. It’s how the airlines treat people and it needs to change. I still really want to become a pilot but until quality of life improves. I won’t go back to the airlines. Also, from a flight attendant point of view who would of gave anything and everything to my passengers that I could have done to make them happy. It’s so hard and embarrassing to be yelled at and ridiculed for company polices, delays and other things that were completely out of my hand. I wasn’t proud of the company I was working for or the airlines as whole. That’s not any kind of job satisfaction.

  • @Ichibuns
    @Ichibuns 5 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    The pilot shortage has been apparent for years. How could the airlines not notice that the average age of their pilots was in their 50's. They let it go too far. They try to fix it now and It'll take years for people to get the training, required hours, and college for some airlines. It'll lag behind for a while. Still won't be enough to cover the retired pilots over the next 10+ years. The airlines ( and legislation) brought it upon themselves.

    • @kenlu993
      @kenlu993 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Doge di Amalfi Get a rating w/ low hours is useless, airliner doesn't care what rating you get by yourself. They need interview and training under their supervisee. my opinion is that fit & agree with urs.

    • @kenlu993
      @kenlu993 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doge di Amalfi I mean, A pliot who hold a CPL can have any job if anyone would hired and sign the contract, this is no doubt for regulations in any countries of aviation administration. But, What I want to emphasize is the reality hereby is talking about the shortage of “Captain pilot, lots of flight hours experience, most countries’ airlines are not hired low hours “pilots”, the low hours of pilots, 200-300 hours only have a CPL would not fit with airlines, even have low hours experience on jet type. but they still can find any places, small companies, who give chance to sign contract in turbo, small jet types aircraft to build hours til 1500 hours. For my comment sense, people won’t try go get jet types first with low hours, emphasis on 200-300 hours, CPL, talk about $30K to jet type-rating, again. PS. Be aware of your initial attitude, especially i saw D’oh! You could ignore my opinions in here, but you don’t have to argue if I was wrong. Please be expect to every personal and their own opinions. @Doge di Amalfi So you are from Europe? I gotta say, pilots there are the luckiest. Right seat of a320 at 300ish hours is a dream come true. Sadly, everywhere else, even a type rating dosent help. Most asian airlines for example, need a type rating AND a certain amount of hours (atleast 500) on type. Where do we get that if we are not a cadet lol.

    • @kenlu993
      @kenlu993 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Doge di Amalfi That's what I am saying as Raafi Gul said. What I am talking in this video subject that is because of the Captain in this video really telling the truth. The airlines are no longer an honorable industry. You are not paid according to your abilities. You are paid based upon your rarity. As such as soon as they get the overwhelming numbers of pilots they want to see the industry will go right back to their old ways. Trying to inspire a lot of young people to become a pilot only makes you a management hack. And you are negatively impacting your own future and the future of all the new pilots entering the industry.
    There is a part two to this. Self flying aircraft. As soon as that is perfected and accepted by the majority of the population then pilots are no longer needed. Self driving cars are almost here. They are the testbed for aviation. If the public will swallow self driving cars then the self flying airplanes will follow hard on the heels of that. IMHO it is extremely unlikely that anyone entering into the airline industry will be able to retire from it. Possibly they will not even be there long enough to recoup training expenses. If you can get an airline to pay for your training or someone else then go for it. If you have to pay for it then think hard about your ability to recoup your costs. You will likely be dumped and have to retrain yourself for another career before you have even paid for the training costs of your airline career path. And do not for a second think the airlines will help you out in any way to retrain yourself for another career. Do not ever say you were not warned in a timely manner. Perhaps 10 years from now some of you will be saying I wish someone clued me into this before I committed to it. Well now you have.

    Endless opportunities for sure. I don't know enough about the companies and how employees are treated and even the job of flying for that matter. I definitely want to fly. Do I want to work for a major airline and if so which one? What kind of plane? Or do I want to be a flight instructor? Then there's the question of where? So many decisions. I want to get to class so I can better understand what my options are. I've applied. Still waiting to year back. Love the videos!!!
