DIY Permanent Holiday LED Lights: installing the WLED software on an ESP8266 NodeMCU Board

  • I decided to install LED lights on our home that we could enjoy year round - This may turn into one of those crazy "sync to music" homes eventually, but initially I'm just doing the roofline and the peaks of our home.
    What I found though is the learning curve for this project is VERY involved! There are so many things to know and a lot of trial and error and "buying things hoping they'll work"
    So - I'm doing a series of videos to share what I have learned to help you do similar projects without all the pain and suffering I've been going through!
    This video covers the setup of the control board from start to finish. Links to the drivers and software needed are below:
    NodeMCU ESP8266 Driver: www.silabs.com/developers/usb...
    WLED Software Installer Link (the easy way to install): install.wled.me
    Tasmotizer Download (the hard way, if the above doesn't work): github.com/tasmota/tasmotizer...

    I can’t thank you enough for these videos . I plan on doing these with the LED bulbs and a J-Channel . A local lighting company quoted me $1500 for 50ft total with one peak. I’ll learn to do it myself and acquire the skill . So once again thank you for making the learning curve easier . This is more digestible than browsing forums

      That was my hope! The quote for mine was almost $6k.. final install for me was under $500

      You’re beyond me there - there’s are a couple good Reddit and Discord groups that would be able to help you. /WLED on Reddit and DrZzs on Discord

    Will the ESP work off of a 12v system like a vehicle? Or does the voltage need reduced?

    • @AskDIYDad
      @AskDIYDad  ปีที่แล้ว

      The ESP8266 is a 5v chip, so you have to reduce it. There are a bunch of ways to accomplish this.. I used these to reduce from 12v to 5v, plugs into the onboard USB port

      No light at all? Make sure you have a common ground wire from your power supply AND the 8266. That’s usually the culprit

    Hello. I’m trying to run your install the hard way lol. My computer keeps telling me to reinstall the program. Says I’m missing api-ms-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dil
    I have reinstalled a few times and still the same thing. Any suggestions

      Are you getting that error when you load the Tasmotizer software? Or at what step?

    • @johntack1371
      @johntack1371 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AskDIYDad I get it when I try to run the program after it is downloaded

    • @AskDIYDad
      @AskDIYDad  ปีที่แล้ว

      So - the WLED software can’t be run directly. So if you’re trying to run the WLED .bin file that’s not going to work. You need to use a program like Tasmotizer to flash it onto the chip.
      If you’re getting the error with Tasmotizer, make sure that you’ve extracted the Tasmotizer software to a folder first and aren’t trying to run it from inside the ZIP file or it will error.

    so his tag is ask DIY dad, but i dont see him replying to anyone here so like does that mean you can ask away and not get anything back?? i hope not cause i have a question. and that is i want to default the leds to a pattern i chose on startup. as in as soon as the esp8266 has power. i want the leds to have a pattern the moment power is added to the device rather then just the boring solid on option that you get the moment you plug them in. so i dont have to keep changing the pattern of the leds when ever the power gets cut for what ever reason. if you or anyone else knows how to go about doing that please let me know, thanks.

      I actually try to answer all the questions I get asked - I wonder if my replies aren’t showing.
      Let me take a look at the config and see - but I’m pretty sure you can set a default. I’ll check and comment back

      @@mikestrong82 There are three steps
      1) Save your preferred color/pattern as a preset (note the preset number)
      2) Go to Config > LED Preferences
      Scroll down about 3/4 of the way to a section called "Defaults" - there you should see an option that says "Apply Preset [ 0 ] at boot"
      3) Enter your preferred preset and save your config
