  • In this latest update video, we build a NEW version of our Magicband reader, which now looks even more like the ones at Disney World. Using just a few electronic parts such a Raspberry Pi , a RFID/NFC reader and a 3D printer, you can put all those Magicbands you have laying around the house to some fun use. With a few changes to the python code, it can play different sounds or display different colors based on the unique id of each magic band. What do you think of this build? Let us know in the comments below if you plan to build it. We will see you on the next build.

    Question @Foolish Mortal Builders . I am trying to create the same thing but for a different function. I don't want the speaker and sound. I want to instead be able to tap my phone using it's NFC to automate that when I tap the scanner, the lights do the same flickering and then turn on/off bedroom light.

    This is amazing. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to bring the magic home! I’m considering building one, but I have a few questions:
    1. what diameter should the model be?
    2. Is the code all preset (I’m not much good at coding and downloading) and if not, is there a detailed description on everything?
    3. Is there a code that only does the green light?
    Thank you!!

    • @foolishmortalbuilders1462
      @foolishmortalbuilders1462  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. The diameter is 6 inches but the 3d files are split into quarters to fit onto smaller 3d printers.
      2. It requires a little linux/raspberrypi knowledge. If you don't have that, you'll have to find someone to set up the SD card for you.
      3. in the settings.conf set the "unknown=" to a sequence that only does green, which i think is "fastpass" in the sample code.

    Brilliant project! Thanks so much.
    I think I will make the spherical version, and try for a metallic finish.
    Are you adapting the new easier-fit tolerances back to the spherical version?
    I assume a fingerprint reader model is next?
    Might I suggest this may be done on the esphome.io platform at 20% the price and significantly lower power, I suspect?
    An esp8266 or esp32 with a DF-Player board for sound could replace the Pi for under $10 total.
    Esphome supports 2 kinds of RFID reader modules that could sit in the enclosure nicely, and a choice of either neopixel or FastLED strips/rings. It can learn and differentiate between RFID's and behave accordingly. Interfaces with Hass.io for home automation, or stands alone.
    It will be a while until my parts arrive, so looking forward to more in the development.

    • @foolishmortalbuilders1462
      @foolishmortalbuilders1462  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to make it spherical, the rounded back piece still fits this version and is included in the stl files. Not only does this face version look much better, it's much easier to print and assemble. Even after Corona, I don't think fingerprint scanners will ever come back at Disney. ESP boards are an option. If a company wants to sponsor it, we'd make an ESP version video. ;)

    • @foolishmortalbuilders1462
      @foolishmortalbuilders1462  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To make the outer ring do the "candy cane" effect, which is what I think you mean by the the christmast party bands, we would have to copy the rainbow() function and modify it. What versions of the raspberry pi have people used to make this? Would a 3A or zero handle it? This is spectacular and am planning to make my Disney mad partner this for her birthday.

      @@KennyF hey, I have since built it with a 3A. Seems to work, only issue I have is that the sound is really poor quality even when running the sound through a good quality speaker. The sound is from a hdmi adaptor because the 3.5mm socket is blocked by the control pins apparently.
      Not sure if low power computer is the issue for the sound quality but that is my only current problem with my build, and I have changed the adaptor and speakers to make sure it wasn’t that.

      @@cammcpake8583 Thanks for the info! So you never tried it with a zero? I've never done any projects with a zero yet but this seemed like a really good fit. Maybe I'll give it a go. I'd really love it if everything could be contained in the reader but not sure if that's possible even with a zero.
      Could the sound quality be from a low quality audio file? When I was doing some LED projects I believe there was some config to get the audio port and the pins to work at the same time. But I didn't need audio so I didn't look to much further into it.

      Do you do anything different from the install process? Same wiring? I was also thinking of using the 5v pin from the Pi to power the LEDs as I see no reason to have a second plug, but no one has yet confirmed if there was a valid reason to not go this route. @@daviderickson299

    Finally got this working, but the volume is SUPER LOW. Can barely hear it without holding your ear up to the speaker. I went into alsamixer and turned the volume up to 100, but there was no change. Am I missing something? Bought all the recommended hardware.

      Try replacing the speaker with a USB powered (but still has the audio jack) speaker. Such as:
