    I rolled the bilstein b8’s, H&R sport springs, bbs chr 18x8.5 offset 47 and the 034 rear swaybar. Put big brakes on and had to do a 10 mm spacer for clearance. I’ve driven it with this setup for a year, it is superb. It has not rubbed or bottomed out a single time. No problems ever, fantastic ride. Drives like it’s on rails.

      I'm about to do b8's with lowering springs and 18x8 with a 35 offset on my mk7.5 gti this weekend I can't wait. I'm at 100k kilometers as I bought it in 2019 doing about 20k a year here u canada the road get rough in spring so most car suspensions don't last past 100k kilometers or 60k in miles. Had to to the same thing with my previous Gli aswell but I went cheap and regreated it hopefully the bilstiens will improve my thoughts on lowering cars.

    The time spent, the tools and the new parts, all added to the effort of the time it takes to study and learn, plus the ingenuity of one to complete the project, it all adds up. The cars are German, Japanese, Korean or American, they all have the same factors in common (time, money, sweat, insults plus ingenuity). Sale or keep it!? You already invested!!

    If you haven’t seen the 2x4 method, it uses that upper sway bar mounting hole and a 2x4 to push the strut up and compress the spring. That allows you to lift the strut out of the knuckle by compression. I have some Koni FSD’s waiting to be installed on my ‘15. I just need to get those special sockets with the hole in the side.

    From my experience with the front struts on other VWs you can use a jack under the hub to compress the strut in situ than apply the spring compressors to the spring in situ. In this case the strut can then be removed without needing to disconnect the driveshaft as its kept shorter.

    • @sibzilla
      @sibzilla ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking of putting spring compressors over the highest part of the spring and under the lip of the shock where the spring sits, but this idea sounds better as it will keep the spring compressed all the way through. Have you tried it? Deffo enough space in there?

      The Bilstein B6 and B8 are filled with nitrogen gas to 350 psi. This makes them too stiff.
      You can remove the access cap at the bottom of each damper, and use a shock needle and gauge to lower the nitrogen pressure to 150-200 psi to get a better ride.

    Did You Keep the GTI? And hows the shocks after 10 months because I am looking at installing B6 struts and shocks on my 2016 Mazda 6 also I am dropping it 1.0" with RSR coil springs. And the whole Gas chamber joke was hilarious! 😂 but let me know if i should go with B4s upfront and B6s in the back since Im dropping the ride height a minimal drop of 1". So im thinking less shock pressure up front is better sinc eim dropping it. Or should I stick with B6 all the way around?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it were me I’d make them match. But that’s my personal opinion. I sold the GTI back in March to get a Toyota Tacoma.
      The B6’s were great, but they did make the ride a little more harsh. B4’s would essentially be an OEM equivalent.

    • @JasonExplainsThings

      They are definitely firmer… I don’t know about 30% firmer, that seems a bit exaggerated. As for safety it’s just as good or better. The car stays more planted over bumps or turns. Only negative is you feel bumps in the road more. This doesn’t change anything like ride height, etc. They car handles great in rain or snow.

      Everything is OEM minus the Bilstein struts.

      @@JasonExplainsThings Interesting. I have a 2004 GTI VR6. My car does not have the rubber bushing that separates the spring from the shock. I bought the Bilstein B6 shocks (front and rear) along with Eibach springs. I also bought new control arms with R32 bushings instead of the factory GTI bushings. I understand they are stiffer than the GTI bushings but offer a more forgiving ride than polyurethane bushings. I may also buy a new sway bar from Eibach. I anticipate having all of this installed near the end of the year since it will be replaced in conjunction with a brake rebuild, axle replacement, tie rod replacement, sub-frame bushing replacement, rear axle beam bushing replacement, engine/transmission mount replacement, clutch replacement, timing chain/guides, coolant hoses, radiator, heater core, serpentine belt/tensioner, starter, alternator, thermostat/housing, coils, spark plugs, ignition harness, secondary air system replacement, throttle body cleaning, exhaust manifold replacement, stick shift bushing replacement, cooling fan replacement, and whatever else needs to be replaced. Right now I'm in the gathering parts, special tools, and bookmarking DIY videos phase. If all of this maintenance goes well, I'll have the car repainted, reupholstered and buy new rims. Basically, a full refresh. The objective is to maintain the car in OEM+ condition in order to preserve reliability and ride quality on the open road. I want to avoid performance parts that might degrade ride quality, durability and comfort. I appreciate your video because it gives me an idea of what to expect from the B6 shocks. I believe they're the best option for my intended use.

    @6:15 mark: You torque to a spec and then, "...go a quarter turn past the click..." What's up with that? Also, the text at that time says, "Torque Top Bolts to 50Nm, + 45 Degree Turn." A 45-degree turn would be an 1/8 turn, and a "quarter turn" would be a 90-degree turn. But the real question is why torque to a spec and then go an arbitrary amount beyond the spec?

      It’s weird, yes. But I follow manuals.

      @@JasonExplainsThings I’d then agree. Follow the book - but strange that’d they’d just not simply increase the torque value.

      @@leeharrison1477 We are trying to achieve a predictable clamping force across the bolt fastener but things like lubricity of the treads and bolt/nut can mess up the torque to clamping force relationship. The torque plus angle method of tightening increases the repeatability in achieving a set clamping force by removing most of the error from friction. The first torque value simply ensures the fastener is fully engaged, the angle stretches the fastener a fixed amount which following hooks law ensures a defined clamping force.

    You shouldn't work on cars & you don't need special tools either. I'm installing these struts right now & got my old struts out by just using a screw driver to widen the lower part the strut sits in.
