Fox was broadcasting all her commercials and following her every move and no matter how much she failed it was obvious that's all she cared about. For as much as people complain about WNBA and how they should only get the money they bring in... well Danica is the other end of the argument. People hated that she was a subpar Nascar driver and were angry that she was paid so much and given so many chances... well it's because she brought the MONEY.
She may be the reason the team was able to afford to properly fund the other drivers on the team. Obviously it was already a good and well funded group BUT they reason they were well funded is because of making smart decisions like hiring Danica. She may not be a good Nascar driver, but in the game of MoneyBall she was a dominant player.
'Demolition' Danica was always fun to watch because you knew a major crash was about to happen at any moment!

That's how stereotypes build up. One person says it, often as a "joke," and then everyone notices every instance it applies and ignores the ones where it doesn't.

I don't claim to understand how that stat graph in the beginning works but I find it hilarious that she juuuust barely got to the level of the worst performance of the worst male race driver. That about sums it up.

I truly believe she should have stayed in IndyCar, or at least stay in the lower NASCAR divisions until she was actually ready. Her teams did her no favors, her sponsors did her no favors, and she did herself no favors.
Me too, I truly believe she might be the only woman to ever win the Indy 500, or at least the first.
I think Dan Wheldon (her close friend) died in her last race probably put her off open wheel racing for life.
She moved to NASCAR the same year Indy had revised driver wight ballast rules. Her dominance was due to her lower weight and that adantage had just been removed.

Danica is a big what-if in NASCAR and IndyCar. She could have been (and quite frankly was) a superstar in IndyCar. She could have won multiple races in the IndyCar Series. Hell, had she stayed in Xfinity, she could have been a race winner there. But she was rushed to Cup, partly due to GoDaddy's sponsorship and partly due to how marketable she was.

That's not partly, that's the only reason. She's extremely marketable and Smoke is happy with that money coming in.

Define superstar please. Did she draw massive attention, yes absolutely. She did her entire career, even in NASCAR. Was she a consistent threat to win, no NEVER, and not at any level. She wasn't even a consistent threat to finish in the top half of the field at the top levels.
She won one race, in Japan.
However, she caused many race-ending accidents for other drivers.

@@Rockhound6165 Yes and a number of top drivers weren't at the race. It was far away and not very important.
The fact that NASCAR drivers almost always come up through dirt track is telling. Driving a stock car is just nothing like driving an open wheeler. Almost none of the muscle memory and instincts you develop in the latter help you in the former. As an experienced sports car racer, I can tell you the first time I was in a dirt track car was like I’d never raced a lap in my life. The car was totally different, the track was totally different, the traffic was totally different. I had to learn everything all over again. So going from open wheel to ARCA to Nationwide to Sprint so quickly was just nuts for her. She was unlucky, yes, but so is everybody.
I was gonna say the same; open wheel to stock car = mostly a recipe for disaster. Completely different physics. Not that anyone couldn't get used to it after a while but that depends on the flexibility of the driver, so I guess she wasn't too flexible a personality.
All right Danica. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

It's funny, I didn't know any of this (I am not any kind of race fan, really) but I was something of a Danica-hater, because all I really knew about her was that she was super overexposed and also that she seemed incredibly unpleasant whenever she wasn't supposed to just stand there and look hot. It only took a month or two of that for me to just desperately never want to hear from her again.

Danica set back female drivers in Nascar by a decade, and you listen to the commentary back then, none of them wanted to say "She's not good enough" for fear of being hammered and cancelled, and blamed everyone else around her. That became her issue, she started to believe it wasn't her failing. And thus a career mindset was born and 24th being her best result.

The problem with Danica was that she spent more time and energy building her brand than she did on honing her on-track skills.
Very true. I can't condemn her for it, though. I mean, when you go from "I don't know if I'll ever get another gig in racing" to "the world loves me and sponsors are truckloading money to me for doing events and commercials", the racing probably tends to take a back seat.
She's a unique case. She's almost more "a celebrity who races cars" than "a race car driver who became a celebrity".

Look at Darrell Waltrip. He bought his way into the small leagues and big leagues, and got called all sorts of things. Simply for telling Cale Yarborough and everyone else he would be in the winners circle NEXT WEEK too.... 60 races in 5 years is a huge feat...
That's kinda the same reason people like DW, Gordon and Jr., was or is in the announcers booth. Lifestyle choices put them in a huge bind, when the money is going out as fast as it comes in.

@@fightlikabrave I personally don't believe it was an XX vs XY thing. Here's an opposite example: the Force sisters did great in NHRA, even beating their coach / mentor / teacher / father John Force. Given that, I don't think the issue was that XX's can't do well in motorsports...
I just don't think that DP was a great 'NASCAR' driver - she was clearly great in other / different driving roles, just not NASCAR.
I used to work at GoDaddy before it went public, which is when they first made her the spokeswoman, and believe me they were so bad with their money. Everyone, including me, got paid way too much for having little to no qualifications. Including her too it seems.

That's why they have notoriously bad hosting services that nobody who knows anything will use, they weren't well architected nor maintained. I think another large factor in her departure from Indycar was Wheldon’s fatal accident. She and Weldon were rivals and close friends, and she was one of the most visibly shaken and emotional following the announcement of his death. It makes sense that that would push her away from open wheel racing

That being said, it's amazing how many of her bad wrecks were not her fault. Big pile ups, someone else's mistake, or just plain bad luck. Not saying she was good, it's just most of her lowlight reels weren't due to her bad driving.
Getting involved in the bad luck is more likely to occur when you’re running mid 20’s. So unfortunately she kind of put herself in those spots naturally. Personally I think a huge part of her struggle was a result of her struggle to qualify well.

I used to know a couple of guys who worked on teams Danica drove for in the UK. They described her as talented, but with an ego that wouldn't quit. They both said she could drive, but she couldn't accept any advice she was given, unless that advice came from a driver she respected. Bobby Rahal was pretty much the only one she would listen to...
As to her NASCAR career, her sponsors rushed her into the big show WAY too fast. A better idea would've been a year doing the ARCA races that didn't clash with Indycar, followed by a year doing the Nationwide races that didn't clash with Indycar, only then moving full time to NASCAR.

She was a hot commodity because she was a woman. She showed some talent, and unlike some previous women racers, she was young, single, and good looking. This is merchandising gold! They had to use her as much as possible before she gets old, ugly, pregnant, fat, or dead. They all figured she was good enough, and with a little time, she'd be better. Sure, she is good enough to beat most who criticize her, and definitely every keyboard racer out there, but she wasn't the best or even in the top group. And she didn't improve.
But let's use her up anyway. Cash in for all we can get while we can.
It is possible that Daytona humbled her. A formula car becomes an extension of your body. Want to turn? Think it, it happens. Stop? Keep your mouth shut or you will lose your teeth. Accelerate? Like a rocket, a real rocket. By comparison, NASCAR are like driving a truck. You can get to bouncing around out there and realize your mortality. Daytona was where I discovered mine. Until August 1992, I never once entertained the thought I could get hurt, let alone die, until my car got loose at Daytona. Traveling about a football field a second puts you in a world of hurt if anything goes wrong. Those speeds make it harder to exceed the limits, and you need to exceed the limits to beat everyone else.
Maybe she reached her limit, but due to the money, fame, and contract obligations, didn't know how to back it back down. I've known people who were great Formula Vee drivers or IT drivers, but put them in a fast formula car or a GT car, and they just didn't cut it. As has been said many times, it is easier to drive a low horsepower car at its limits than to drive a high horsepower car to its limits.
There is a big difference between being able to drive fast and to race.

She is rightly judged against the competition she had AND pointing out for nearly all of her stock car career it is more than fair to say she was given much better equipment than the people she was routinely running around.

That's wild. As someone from the other side of the world that never watched the series (I was mostly an F1 kid), I always thought she was one of the top drivers, heck even a multiple time champion. She was always on the ads and sponsor videos. Just now I'm getting to know about her career, thanks to this video. It's incredible how far your personal brand can take you.
It`s the leftie and woke culture that perfect fits her label. They don`t care about competition or quality. It`s enough when someone is black, a woman or/and a lesbian.

Sure enough. She was a great spokesperson for her sponsors. She knew if she became overly aggressive she would be wrecked. Keeping her car active kept her sponsors happy. All i know is i was always looking for the bright green car. As far as the king petty goes all he could sell were oil filters. As far as his skill he had access to incredible cars, technology & equipment. His rank was bolstered by nepotism from Lee & his relationship with Bill France that got him past inspections & any sanctions for rule violations. Most of his wins were prior to 1966 when Bill France banned the Ford 427 s.o.h.c. but not the Chrysler 426. lke a vicious spoiled brat throwing sand in the other kids faces in the sand box & not being punished for it.

The only reason she was allowed to destroy that 10 car every year was because of sponsor dollars. When GoDaddy left, Nature’s Bakery jumped right in. When Nature’s Bakery left, Aspen Dental jumped right in. These brands gave SHR over 30 races a season in sponsorship for Danica to play with her toys.
This was the equivalent of parents letting a 6 year old make their own dinner.
Of course she got sponsor dollars. The networks would always cut to her puttering around in the back so the sponsor always got airtime every race. When Manziel was playing football the networks had their "Johnny Cam" constantly showing his stupid face even when he wasn't even playing (and he was actually good). With Danica they had some weird compulsion to always cut away from the action to her in 25th place. They weren't ever talking about similar duds like Kevin Conway, and why should they? I never hated her; just that mandatory Danica segment.
SO THIS IS WHO MY GRANDPA WAS BLABBERING ABOUT ON HOSPICE CARE!!! He got dementia in 2019, and was obsessed with NASCAR. He wasn’t too keen about her, but he wouldn’t stop talking about her.

I’d say that Danica’s career in NASCAR is a cautionary tale of moving up too quickly. Much like Icarus who flew too close to the sun. A lesson I’m definitely taking to heart with my racing journey. Better to prove my worth first in the series I’m in. Then move up when I’ve got the experience and confidence to take on that challenge.

@@PointNemo9 Fair enough, I can see how other factors could make that difficult or near impossible because of elements out of her control. But I certainly think that this method would help her develop as a better NASCAR driver than what eventually became of her career. She’s got the talent and skill to wheel those cars around a track, no doubt. I just think a little more time in NASCAR’s lower divisions could have helped in adjusting her driving style to maximize her performance in the sport.
In retrospect, Danica appearing in a Kart Racer game as the only real driver feels strangely appropriate.

I think it's more anger at a wasted opportunity in my opinion. Myself for example, I would love to be a race car driver, but I didn't grow up near tracks, didn't have enough money, and didn't have parents involved in motorsport. So my only option now is to do sim racing in my home where I will never be on the same level of a pro driver. However, seeing someone like Danica, I'm pretty confident that if I had the same opportunities as her (growing up carting, sponsors, etc.) I would've gotten better results than she did.
That's what people mean when they say they could do better. No one is under the illusions that in our current state we could beat a pro, but that if we had the same opportunities as a pro, we would be better.

Motorsport is notorious for it's failure to reward talent. Focusing instead on money. Look at Formula 1 and how there are talented F2 drivers waiting on the sidelines because big names with lots of sponsors, or rich pay drivers are taking up seats. Motorsport is literally only about who you know and how much money you have to spend.

I've never watched NASCAR in my life, but from the coverage she got, I always assumed she was one of the best. What a joke.
You forgot the real reason she fizzled out: her attitude.
She kept giving attitude to everyone, thinking she's the next Jeff Gordon. But kept wrecking herself (haw) during almost every race, which made each of her failures satisfying to see for the crowd. She wasn't seen as a rookie underdog to root for, she was seen as a marketing gimmick who constantly ran out of talent on the field, a good chunk of which was at the risk of others.

As someone from outside nascar (everything i know is from Ricky Bobby) i cant tell about her attitude outside of races but from the clips shown she doesn't seem to be able to learn humility. If she stopped trying to punch so high above her weight class she would likely wouldn't have crashed and burned.
Having the humility to say "this is too much for me" probably could have made her career much better. Idk how big the sponsorship gaps are between nascar/stockcar and what she was in before but being the top 3-5 in the league vs the worst, i think i know who i would pay to promote

It's very possible that she was in it for the money. Seeing how her role as a marketing gimmick would comfortably guarantee her a top-dough sponsorship deal, this was basically her safe option. Don't try too hard to climb the ladder, just perfect the act of spectacular crashes (which bring viewership) and purposefully amplify any drama (which brings viewership) by pretending to be be smug and full of yourself so that it's satisfying to watch you fail (which brings viewership). Hell, she managed to keep this up for 10 years, earning obscene amounts of money doing it. Meanwhile if she went for the underdog role, she would've needed considerable luck to actually get to the top instead of running out of momentum and fading into obscurity around the middle of the ranking list.

The shoe in Montreal had nothing to do with her struggles. She had a broken axle, likely from jumping the curbs in the race. As a result she went 6 laps down while the team changed it out.

Let's not forget the time she ran into her own teammate in the pits at Kansas Speedway in Indy Car.

Danica is such a curious case. Flashes of serious talent, flashes of stupidity and a lot of flashes of shocking luck. Seemed like she went out chasing the money, or was certainly sweet talked into it well enough. She simply didn't belong in NASCAR and that's ok, but careers can be defined by recognizing what you're not good at and either changing or continuing swimming against the tide. It's a shame her career went out the way it did, but you get the feeling it didn't have to end that way
As Petty said "She's fast but not a racer" There's many drivers in all branches of motorsport the same. She was quick in qualifying but didnt have a race brain
@@xbgo1856 - In driver's school, this is what I had to teach students. Many were fast in Solo events, and they could run really fast laps, but they just didn't get the idea of racing. A well-trained friend criticized me often in the beginning until we raced each other. I rented a much slower Pinto than his Fiat. He gridded around 25th and I was around 35th. When the green dropped, everyone began lining up on the right side of the straight for Turn 2 on the "correct" line. I dropped to the left on the "wrong" line. I passed about 25 cars, was on the inside, and had the corner. He went from about 10 cars ahead of me to about 15 behind me in one corner. After that race, he admitted he had discovered "racing" as opposed to "driving fast".
Racing is strategy. Planning moves ahead before you ever get there. Most learn to drive fast in schools, and often never make the transition to "racing".

Danica was yet another case of an open wheel driver entering NASCAR during the open wheel invasion and flopping hard. While her flame out wasn't the quickest (that still belongs to Dario Franchitti) her's is arguably the worst considering how many years she had to prove herself and just how bad she in did all those years in top tier equipment. The talent was there, but whether due to her own doing, sponsorship demands, or being rushed up it all went to hell to create one of the most infamous careers in NASCAR history.

I like that you prefaced most of the video by making the point that even though Danica Patrick is not a prolific NASCAR competitor, she is still better at the motorsport than the average person who doesn't race cars as their job. That was a very good point to make early on.

I think the people who pushed Danica into NASCAR and quickly advanced her to the top level did not have her best interest in mind. To them, she was nothing but a marketing tool used to generate hype and attract more viewers to the sport. They didn't care if she got hurt or killed on the track. They milked the novelty of having a female driver in NASCAR for as long as they could and made as much money off the novelty while it lasted. Danica's career in NASCAR was a cruel publicity stunt. If the people in her corner cared about her they would not have thrown her to the wolves. The poor woman literally got chewed up and spit out nearly every time.
There is a reason you don't see large numbers of female drivers in NASCAR, it is a sport that its primarily male. I did some searching on Google and the only female driver I could find currently competing is Hailie Deegan who drives in the Craftsman Truck division.

To some extend, all drivers are treated like that but the difference is they are men in a field full of men...she was a woman and an attractive one at that, so she was incredibly marketable. Motorsports is one of the few sports where if you're pushed for the wrong reasons, it can literally be deadly.
