Eye Health QOTD : Have you tried Migraine Glasses? What do you think of the rose/ pink tint?

Doctor Eye Health not “official” Migraine glasses but rose colored. I find this shade extremely hard to find, this in between red/orange/pink.. like rose gold. I would love to try these glasses, it would really help especially for sunny summer ☀️

I don't get migraines, but I do get cluster headaches that last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Oddly enough, what causes the most light sensitivity for me is when my allergies are really bad. I'll have to ask my eye doctor about these.

I watched this video about 2 months ago and decided to order the Axon Optic glasses. I ordered the transitional so that I could wear them in the stores and while outside in the sun. Not only do I suffer from chronic migraines but also have photo sensitivity. PLEASE do not hesitate to order these glasses!!!!! For the first time in forever I have gone one month without a migraine or any auras. I’m going to order a pair of transitional reading glasses next. Thank you SO much for this video. I would never have thought of the rose-coloured glasses, Dr Allen, but I’d try anything that helped me with the photo sensitivity I endure day in day out. I have epilepsy due to a nasal fall as a child, but Drs also say the pupil of my right eye is very dilated. Whatever it is and however I came by it, I’d definitely try the glasses in your video as at present I have to turn down all lighting indoors and especially on my mobile, laptop etc. Going out in the sun is a pain when it’s sunny, and taking the clip-on sunglasses off I’m really startled, the same when waking up! I’ll most certainly get one or both sets of glasses, by the way, yours look great on you! Many thanks for a brilliant and eye-opening video Dr Allen, you’ve helped me so very much indeed

I have visual snow syndrome with migraines and do wear tinted lenses all the time. If available, my recommendation is to go to a Optometry School and get the testing at their Binocular Vision Clinic. The reason being they should have quite a bit of sample tinted lenses to choose from. My tint is non-standard Violet 73% not FL-41 and have two pairs for my distance/progressive lenses and my computer/reading lenses.

My current glasses have medium brown tinted lenses that help with my light sensitivity. The tint is somewhere between the barely noticeable fashion tints and sunglasses, they're darker than the former but lighter than the latter. I wear them practically all the time, inside and outside. Before the tinted glasses, I used to immure myself in dark rooms as much as possible.

I can't stand retail lighting, especially at big box stores with exposed flourescents. There are whole chains I just boycott, especially hardware stores with those lighting fixture aisles running 80 kitchen lights and fans at once. The makeup aisles at most drugstores are so overlit with LED displays I can't go down them.
I don't know why chains insist on over lighting. It can't be pleasant for employees either.

I’ve been chronically for 18 years and many of those years have been spent in dark rooms. I had chronic migraine dictate my life. My parents’ house has these tall and wide windows that come to a point and finding curtains wasn’t easy, so I stayed locked away in my room, decked out with blackout curtains taped to the walls, for weeks on end. I’d come out after dark (so, not until about 9pm in the summer) and after the lights were turned off, go to the bottom of the stairs so my Mom handed me a food tray. We’d whisper about what had happened that day, so I could keep up with how everyone was. I’d then walk back to my cave.
Every time I had a headache, this happened. The longest in a row was 23 days, but it was often more than a week at a time.
Botox injections helped a lot, but the last month or so, the coverage was really iffy. It wasn’t strong enough to keep the migraines at bay, but my neurologist couldn’t risk administering the new injections yet. I got about 20 injections at a time and would be crying by the end. Something about a shot in the face and not being able to move or flinch away or react to the pain was really... traumatic and horrifying.
Since I have chronic pain, even uncomfortable things are often perceived as pain, and things that normally hurt people get cranked up a level. 20 shots within five minutes always felt like this... barrage I couldn’t stop. I needed the treatment, but it was horrible to get.
Now, as a result of being in the dark so frequently, I have photophobia. I’m not sure where it is on the spectrum of problematic to severe, but even on rainy days that are very overcast, in the middle of winter, the light gives me a headache within 10-15 minutes.
My apartment is fit out with floor lamps, because their soft light is far more bearable than overhead lighting. My night vision is great and I can read in light most people can’t even function in well enough to get dressed! But light is really hard to deal with. And it isn’t as simple as “open the drapes or go for walks and get used to it.” I have to go about it gradually enough to set off the migraines. It’s a gamble every time I try to become accustomed to light.
Blue light glasses are helping me to continue my job as an editor, in addition to having the screens at minimum brightness. By having a flipped sleeping schedule, I can generally avoid being up during daylight hours. I can go to the store at night, go to a 24 hour gym. If I have doctor’s appts either at 8am or 4pm (in winter), I can avoid the brighter parts of the day. But... it’s not normal. I can never forget how odd it is, because it causes issues trying to meet up with friends and family. It’s a weird bombshell when you’re trying to date.
There’s a good reason I became photophobic, and what the ophthalmologists I’ve seen appear to not give proper weight to is that those problems are still extant. I’ve never gotten good advice on how to walk back the photophobia. I guess it’s odd enough that they haven’t dealt with it before. I am generally told to ask my neurologist. But he tells me to ask the ophthalmologist. The downside of specialization is that people can get caught in the cracks if they aren’t a straightforward case.
And so, years go by, and it’s still a huge problem. I can’t function well in society when I have to hide during the day, pray that it’ll be cloudy on days I have appointments. Every time I go out on a sunny day, I’ll return with a migraine, and that’s when the waiting begins. Maybe it’ll be two days. Maybe it’ll be two weeks. Only time will tell.
My new glasses block blue light and it’s been helpful in allowing me the ability to work (as an editor) without constantly needing a break from screens, but I do need something to help my general sensitivity. I don’t know if I’ll be able to reverse years of threshold tampering, or if the sensitization can be undone, but it’s a goal well worth the attempt.

I'm so sorry! What helped me (in addition to wearing rose glasses wn needed that are not special ones btw sometimes while screen viewing in addition to having all screens set not very bright with the golden night time settings where possible) was gradually going with thinner black out type curtains (that let a little light in versus the thicker ones but these were over blinds that did not keep all the light out but a lot of light out too). Please try to get material to cover those windows in the other room so you are not triggered too much at once by too bright of a light and then at a less bright time of day try letting a little light in through blinds to not physically or physiologically overwhelm you! Do things in slow layers like perhaps 1. peel curtains over blinds back some in a slightly darker time of day, then maybe open the blinds slightly later. This photophobia can be reversed some but it IS physical and something you have to carefully build up to that may never get better completely but can improve quite a bit! People that haven't experienced this (for years in a row, like us) don't always understand. I am praying for complete healing for your situation! I also pray for sympathy, empathy and actions to follow that from your roommates, family, friends and co-workers. You also may want to try medical grade (if available in your state) cbd/thc oil). That has helped my migraines occasionally after the onset and has helped to prevent them wn starting to feel fatigued from daily responsibilities/being over stimulated. Try to slowly in baby steps expose your eyes more (but not without sunglasses outside unless in a very shaded area wn there is not extreme brightness around)! Love to you!

    • @AmaraJordanMusic
      @AmaraJordanMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sarahmoorman6936 Thanks so much Sarah! I’m happy to report that after two years of a kind of… exposure therapy like you were discussing, I’m able to go to movies again (If I wear my noise cancellation headphones and lightly tinted glasses) and have gone from needing blackout curtains to just blinds (though I use them at night because I’m so used to sleeping in pitch blackness). I don’t get migraines on cloudy days anymore, and can even withstand partially cloudy days without sunglasses for up to 15 minutes! I can handle full sunlight with dark wrap around shades, so I was able to go kayaking with my then fiancé (we got married in Scotland two weeks ago today!!!) for the first time!
I still have migraines and bad days, but it’s not controlling my life like it was. I’m continuing to work on all aspects of my health (my chronic pain was pretty severe; I was essentially bed bound due to my back until I had surgery last November). I hope to be healthy enough to carry a pregnancy within the next three years, and my goal is to be able to take my kid to the park, like any other parent, without having to temper that impulse due to the amount of light. I think, at least with the photophobia, I’m well on my way!
Of course now I’ve found out that I have Polymorphus Light Eruption, a kind of sun allergy, and I break out in a very itchy raised rash when exposed to the sun. I didn’t have this issue before I became ill at age 12, so maybe over the years it can fade as well. As for now, It’s so severe that the first few times it breaks out in the year, I can’t sleep because I’m so itchy!
Thank you for your advice and kindness; I hope that you and everyone dealing with this problem will find their own road to recovery, rocky though it may be. 🌷

I am so happy to hear about all of that good news and your goals/aspirations of expanding your family all the more! :) I live in Fl so I start to dread the summers a couple of months in advance and have already considered the wrap around sunglasses you mentioned for the especially bright days (even for when walking to a car in early day - although I don't drive since I don't have a car so thankfully driving through bright light is not an issue and I usually keep sunglasses on while riding in a car). My photophobia, (although not quite as severe as yours) was definitely significantly effecting me (and still does) but is quite a bit better than it was! I also use sunhats to avoid over head light on bright days and this helps in addition to sunglasses! Two testimonies here of people who are better! Yay!!! @@sarahmoorman6936 I’m glad you’re also improving! It just goes to show that where you are is not necessarily where you’re destined to stay. I was stuck for 8-10 years, so it felt like that was it, that was my life, forever. But sometimes things start to go your way! In the meantime, accommodation to increase quality of life can help it be more bearable.
I also dread the summer. On top of the photophobia and the sun allergy, I don’t regulate heat properly, so I’m always miserable outside. I’m in Tennessee, so it’s not *quite* so bad as FL, but the humidity here makes the heat thing worse, as it’s harder to sweat and expend that extra heat. These are awesome! I never knew they existed.Had a horrible scare one time while driving: I noticed tiny weird squiggles kind of like a line of dead pixels in a damaged led tv screen, in the corner of my eye. The line vibrated and then began to diffuse across the vision, which was then followed by loss of speech. Went to neurosurgeon next day and had a whole slew of tests only to be diagnosed with migraine with aura. I noticed that there are a couple of triggers for me:
    Aspartame
    Sun light
    Food poisoning
New shirts that I was too lazy to wash ( chemicals in the clothes during shipping and processing can leach out and be absorbed through the skin)
Avoiding the others are easy and now I can add the glasses to my arsenal since wearing sun glasses indoors will often get you stares with people assuming you were high last night, or had botox, or trying to be Anna Wintour lol.

They really need to make a pair shaped more like Oakley where the lenses actually wrap around the side of the eye protecting & preserving vision from the side as well! (That side mirror when driving and ignorant people not turning off their high-beams come up behind me & it really hurts!) They've helped me a lot over the years but during the past six months I feel like my photophobia has gotten way out of control and not even the glasses are any help. I had to quit my last job because of my light sensitivity and now I'm having super hard time finding a suitable job/work environment where I can keep my eyes open without piercing pain and throwing up. Used to get most severe migraine in summers. Happened when sunshine would bounce off a metal part on a car in front of me when driving. Felt for a second that a long knife had went thru one eye. Knew that within a few minutes if I didn't get one of the migraine meds I took in 80s I only had less then half hour to turn around and get home with a excruciating migraine. So bad I would usually vomit. Gone now after menopause. Used to get 1 to 4 a month from 25 on.

Just ordered some Zenni sunglasses with their FL-41 lenses- have had bouts of photophobia regularly (tears pouring, can't keep my eyes open in the sun, some swelling, and sneezing nearly every time I go into bright sunlight) and recently started having migraines along with. Look forward to trying them. I feel like having large lenses is important for me and likely other folks. I was in the Caribbean earlier this week and my prescription transition lenses didn't save me (regular rectangular glasses) - ended up with the worst migraine I've ever had- ended up wearing my wife's bedazzled pink oversized sunglasses instead every time I had issues, and even those were just marginally better. One bout on the island I was driving and had to hold one eye open while driving as my eyes felt like they were swelling shut.

I'm pretty light sensitive and unfortunately the indoor axon lenses are just not enough for me! I wore them for the first week at school, where my light sensitivity is the worst because of the fluorescent lights, and they barely helped. My eyes felt less gritty and strained, but I still got a migraine every day. They offer an in between indoor and outdoor lens, which I'm going to order. I like the indoor ones when I'm working on digital art and need to see color, but for everyday use I think the in betweens are for me.

Had a tiny spot in the right eye that was completely blurred. It only lasted maybe 5 minutes but definitely shocked me. The next day I would have heat wave looking things with black and red lightning bolts in my peripheral vision. I've never suffered or even had migraine headaches in my life and before and after the episode never got a headache.
It's pretty funny because my dad who's been an optometrist for 45 years was out of town and had his phone off so the one time in my life I had something weird going on with my eyes I couldn't ask him about it and listen to him talk about eyes for the next 92 minutes.

Regarding the tint of the 'inside' lenses, the color reminds me of when the first commercially available lenses that darkened with sunlight and reverted back to lighter; this was back in the '60s or so, before you were even THOUGHT of yet - hee hee. Any who, when inside, out of the sun, there was still a slight tint to the lenses, but again no where near as much as these lenses. And YES, Doc; looks way cool on you. ;-)

Anyways I love em because my headaches aren't as bad. Maybe at 10-30% of what they normally are and you don't understand, I hate that they are pink but the level of pain relief is at the point where it's worth it and I won't be without them. 😢 I would suggest anyone suffering migraines from photophobia to give it a try. Like wear a non prescription pair for 30 min. I went in fully doubting it would work and because they were pink I didn't want it to. Im geting the fl41 glasses next week we will see how they compare to the 180-540nm blocking laser safety glasses I think if I designed a pair of glasses they would be level 0-4 photochromatic glacier glasses that go all the way from 80 VLT to 4 VLT depending on the UV level but are FL41 and can also be used safely for high altitude climbing I experience ASD related photophobia and have always had polarized sunglasses as a accommodation in school now when outside I usually where glacier glasses but for driving I where dark polarized glasses and for getting food in the store I where sunglasses it would be pretty great if i could just where one pair of glasses for all environments from grabbing a pack of ramen in Walmart to driving to climbing

You need to see a doctor about further allergy testing and better ways to control/treat these allergies, because to be honest, with allergies that severe, you may never have a good time to go outdoors, and it's already negatively impacting your life. You may also inquire about allergy immunizations, which are shots that you get every so often that can cure you of certain allergies.

What do you think about Avulux glasses? They are also maid to reduce photophobia and migraine. I highly hesitated between the two. I have light sensitivity due to autism (my green eyes dosent help). I don't really understand the diffrence between Avulux and Axon glasses.

What kind of glasses would one wear when playing in a band at a bar to be able to see the audience without facing the harsh spotlights?

I just wear my category 4 sunglasses indoor, out, night. VS and migraines has taken enough of my vision away and I use a white cane anyways, if I can somewhat see great, but at this point, over a year into VS and several months of cane use, not having any vision doesn't bug me as much. Also I found out Noir Medical seems to sell a filter that seems to be the exact same tint according to the charts for their filters but for much cheaper. Filter #41 and #42 seems to match up with the FL-41 filter.

I have them and I don't like the rose color. They are a bit dark. But they do work. I wish they could make them in a clear version. I looked all over for a quality pair of migraine glasses and you just can't find them without the rose color or some kind of color tint.

I know you're not my doctor and you probably can't give medical advice to strangers on the internet, but my eyes are pretty light sensitive in my opinion. I have an astigmatism in both my eyes and on sunny days my eyes actually hurt when I'm outside unless I'm wearing sunglasses, at night the light from cars physically hurt my eyes so I'll drive with sunglasses on to reduce the halos that the oncoming traffic produce. When people shine a light in my face I literally can't see and my eyes start hurting immediately. Are these the kind of glasses that would work to help prevent that? Well all except for the flashlight thing...

Great info. I have Solar Urticaria which causes photophobia I have special glasses but today my eye dr wants to get aggressive in addressing my photophobia. He said they’re a red clay tint. I didn’t ask what they’re called, I figured it’d be easy to find online and I don’t go back until next month. So I thought I’d ask you :) thank you!

It would be nice if the FL-41 was avaliable as a flash to mirror photochromic, that could be paired with a G-15 polarized photochromic.
