Did he just leave out the single whip before snake creeps down? A modification maybe? Sorry, if it's a dumb question. Anyway, it doesn't take anything away in the least from such a wonderful performance with a level of song that is rarely seen. For all the claim and counter claim of who was best etc. (pointless Tai Chi world politics), this man and Cheng Man Ch'ing obviously reached the highest levels of proficiency in this art. It's clear to me that they share far more in common than any minor difference of external shape, sequence or application.
@@ancientexercise8973 you're right, I was making reference to the CMC form sequence of movements. I have seen different forms by master Huang Sheng Shyan, but this is clearly a much shorter version. Personally, I would consider this to be a short-set, which I've seen some teachers do as particular training methods. The complete form would include all movements, whether it be a short form or a long form. Out of these forms, short sets can be created and practised. Even shorter sets can be used for training purposes, such as: a contunous loop set, or even incorporating left and right side versions. In this short video, it seems to go like this: Single whip (although the part before this seems to be missing, because the video starts in mid-movement of a transition) - cloud hands (x3) - hook hand of single whip (without the raised forward hand, hence my original query), snake creeps down, golden rooster stands on one leg (right and left), separate foot (right and left) - then a wonderful hand movement that ends in fist under elbow - close set. It's certainly an interesting reference. Although, by reading some of the other comments here, it's not to everyone's liking - that's Tai Chi for you! Personally, I'm impressed and inspired by the level of "song" that is shown in this video.
@@ancientexercise8973 yes, I've seen other Huang videos and those of Hela Ebel also. There are many good examples out there. I started CMC with John Kells, a student of Dr. Qi Chiang Tao, who was Cheng Man-Ch'ing neighbour, friend and close student in Taiwan. When Huang first went to see Cheng, Cheng sent Dr. Qi to meet him. Huang tried to push Dr. Qi and wasn't able to, with that he decided to study with Cheng Man-Ch'ing. That is the story told by T.T. Liang in his biography "Steal my Art", and he would know - he was there too.
@@ancientexercise8973 I wasn't with him at that stage, although I spent about 10 years at his Tai Chi schools in London. Steven Moore, who was perhaps his closest student at the time, on a daily basis for 25 years, was the one who worked with him most. I've been in regular contact online with Steven since 2020. Having felt John's touch many times in pushing hands and other energy exercises, I know how unique he was. The "no - touch stuff" is a connection between teacher and student, it's real but it depends a lot on the connection between them and the condition of the student, or anyone really, that is receptive and sensitive enough to energy. I asked this same question recently to a Chen style (a close student for many years of Chen Sheng Yu). He said it's real and that he can do it and receive it. He said it's like the connection between a mother and baby - the baby intuitively knows who their mother is, and vice versa. For this type of connection to develop and evolve, it's a lot of work and dropping of the ego. Most people, including myself, resist this transformation or just don't do enough practice (which is also true for me...). Obviously, in videos on TH-cam anything can be made to look real, but without the personal one-to-one experience, there is no way of knowing. If you, or anyone, has felt magnetic forces of attraction and repulsion, then you'll know that invisible energy exists and it can have surprising effects. John had an intensely focused spirit, was so deep in yielding and sinking too, I used to feel like a carpet was pulled out from under my feet and I "floated", with that he could direct me (in my case with very light touch) to wherever he wanted. I could do nothing except go along with the ride...
A Great Master? Let's be honest - there is no integrated movenent flow and for that matter no chi. Professor Cheng Man Ching, his Tai Chi teacher, perhaps one of the very few masters of our times was on a diifferent road indeed!
Huang Sheng Shyan's form emphasizes on slightly different principles form the CMC and other lineages. It flows differently. Skill wise, Master Huang's methods has produced many more high level students compared to CMC's students. Huang Sheng Shyan understood and practiced certain principles, attainting high level skills that other CMC student peers did not.
@@haraldtyson Yes. Just like any other skill, there are levels of proficiency. Master Huang was no fake. He fought in combat against the Japanese occupation. He understood struggle the ultimate level. That is why he did not weapons to his Taiji students. He felt that swords, fans and staffs, were useless against guns in the modern era.

Yeah, I think this is slightly modified to show just a part of the form.
