  • In this video I look at a customers 2014 GMC Yukon XL that has a customer complaint of no communication with the state inspection computer. In other words the data link connector has no power to it in this case. Let's see if we can find out why.

Having worked at SMA beside Eric myself for a few years staring in 2019 I can honestly say there is no better person to learn from! Him, his wife Vanessa and Josh are all the perfect example of what honest hardworking people are all about. I use the things he taught me almost daily In diagnostics at the shop! Thank you all for the time you took to be great people!!

McCoy you are so fortunate to be able to work with a professional like Eric. When I was in high school in '69-'70 and in a work-study program, I worked at a gas station that like most back in the day had a two-bay shop but all I really did was pump gas and do oil changes. Sadly, I didn't learn a whole lot, but at age 17 I thought it was great that I was getting out of school.

I'm currently in trade school and I wish I was learning from Eric. Not saying the p[ace I'm in is bad, but I do feel kind of bad for most of the students since, a lot come in with 0 knowledge on anything or have language barrierto over come on top of learning a trade. Me I got about 6 years of DIY and learned a lot from SMA and other channels alike. Give's me a slight advantage.
As @donaldmarty says, that boy is very fortunate and I hope he takes a lot from you Eric.

I've seen multiple times over the years where that has happened. Or the port has a popped fuse and they had just cleaned out the car before they brought it to the dhop because that port and obd plug didn't work.

My heart is in my mouth when I see you pull one of those fuse boxes apart. If I did that I would end up with all manner of faults on reassembly, where loads of other wires have broken off.

    • @earlestes8649
      @earlestes8649 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Been there myself and it wasn’t fun everything was green and pusy nasty, had to buy real small crimp terminals and start replacing each wire one at a time so that they didn’t get crossed. It was on a 91 ford f150 the electronic control module just terrible. But it was still working good when I sold it

Yeah, if it was me, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near that fuse box. I would have just run a new wire to the data connector and tied it in as Eric did. He got lucky on this one but I've seen too many of those fuse boxes just fall apart when you try to remove them.

Where I used to work before retirement, the aftermarket upfitters used to like pin 16 for power to their units. Of course a 10 amp fuse (Ford truck) didn't last long, so I installed a Napa fuse holder like yours and left pin 16 with it's own 10 amp fuse for Diagnostics and Smog Test.

Hi Eric, being an old man and having old tricks back in the day, but I suppose you do know this trick?
When the posts + _ were full of corrosion after disconnecting I would boil a kettle pour it over the terminals battery and it would all disappear like magic?😂
I would then smear them with vaseline no more problems?
Now’s the future it was to easy back then unlike now!
I very much like how you work with your customers not only, but you do an excellent job your very Particular and careful when your are finished making sure that it’s done and cleaned for your client’s.
There are a few about who are proud of what they do and you’re one of them pal!
    Good job!!!

Excellent fix. "Bones" was doing a good job as an assistant, lol. Boy, y'all sure have the green puss and rust up there. I'm glad it's not that bad down south here in Tennessee. Stay safe, and God bless

"See if the cat is dead or alive" is a Schroedinger reference. And then you refer to pandora's box. I like your mixed metaphor! 😀

I was beginning to think that I was the only one to get the Shroedinger’s cat/ Pandora’s Box mixed metaphor.

For taping in an even tighter spot, use your 3M Super33 tape and wrap a "normal" (non heat-shrink) butt connector. It's way easier when repairing insulation in a harness with lots of wires in really tight spots.
