2016 Citroen DS 5 - REVIEW - only the French can do cars like this

  • We expect cars from France to be unconventional... whacky even. But what of this new luxury offering, the DS 5? What does its Avant-garde approach mean for the humble cup holder? And does this piece of automotive art actually work...as a car?

    This car is for people who want to drive a niche brand vehicle that is very rare on the roads. German cars like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes have become too common on the roads in this day and age as they have been selling to the mass market segment with their lower end models and they are rapidly becoming as common as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, and Ford. Vive la france!

    On my 3rd French car & quite rightly so, challenging characteristics are many. But all have been a joy to own. Had a Peugeot 308 despite poor conversion to RHD, tiny glovebox & sweep to centre wipers with the smaller blade cleans the drivers side, Renault Clio with wipers set up for LHD, strange chips and chimes plus all have the weirdest turn signal sounds. Still love the French as they do things their own way.

      CarNut .kiwi, I don't know if you get the current generation of the Renault Twingo, shares chassis ect with the current Smart Fortwo & Forfour, it's a rear engine rear wheel drive city car, majority of motoring press have mediocre reviews as they think it should be like a Porsche 911, it's a city car. They prefer the VW Up!, which I found it to be dull and overrated. Nearly 3 years with my Twingo & absolutely love it, it has a personality which the VW lacks, it's also been a joy to own. Every one who's been in it has loved it too. Viva La France 🇫🇷

    seems like a very good car to me. in the US we can't buy quirk. but I heard a few years ago French cars may be coming back. Seems America has turned all the French cheeses into cellophane-wrapped American cheese food. (in case you are wondering, that is not a good thing.)

    Don’t put a full cup of coffee in the cup holders if your going to open/close the door..........and maybe get a decent sheepskin seat cover. Turn off the engine stop/start option once, then leave it alone.
    There you go, all your issues with this car solved. Your welcome.

    • @CarNutvideos
      @CarNutvideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can’t leave the start stop alone as it defaults back to ‘rubbish’ every time you restart the car. Drive one and feel my pain.

  • @h3rjp
    @h3rjp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great review. That was more or less what I said to my other half when they bought one!
    Why would you want to disable the stop start? I’ve never had an issue with it being on? Though perhaps our fuel is more pricey!

    • @slavkovukmanov3278
      @slavkovukmanov3278 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True that! And even if you want to turn it off, you don't do that 3-steps procedure on daily basis, i suppoese...

    • @lloydbelle3406
      @lloydbelle3406 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was my question too. Another thing is it is a driver style - you either like stop-start or you don't, so there's no need for the easy switch on - switch off whilst driving.
      If drivers don't like it - it stays off indefinitely.

  • @continental_drift

    My Peugeot 307 has cup holders in the centre console of the car, they're just to give you hope.
    I'm pretty sure that no one tested the usability because.
    a) cups/cans don't fit
    b) can't use the handbrake
    c) because they are so close together you can't use both cup holders at the same time.
    I made a cup holder to go in the exact position the DS has them in. Life is much better.
    The massage seat is a worry.
    I think quirky is a feature ;-)

    • @brahms63
      @brahms63 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly!! I prefer cup holders in the door rather than behind the gear stick and the handbrake...
      How can somebody resume a premium car to the cup holders anyway...

    The car is fantastic. This review is quite unfair actually...
    Cup holders just behind the gear stick is even more problematic than in the doors.
    And if a Citroen is not confortable, then no car is confortable...If Citroen is known for something it's precisely because of confort!

    • @slavkovukmanov3278
      @slavkovukmanov3278 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great review, but I also think he was a bit too harsh with that cup holders issue, "uncomfortable seats" and switches on the ceiling... I like all that! And for my cup of tea (actually, it's esspresso :) the hole on centre console, between the window swithes, will do as well!

    This car is one of the best looking cars still on the roads! Pilots do not complain about the airplane cockpit, so why these kind of people still insist compare with the ultra boring German cars?!

    • @CarNutvideos
      @CarNutvideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe it’s because planes have about 25 times more instruments, switches and controls to accommodate in their cockpits than your average family hatchback does. I totally get this card eccentric appeal but some elements are infuriatingly frustrating and simple woeful design blunders.

      CarNut.kiwi yesterday I drove on Mercedes C200d recent model from a car rental company. I took me more than 5 minutes to understand the acclimatization buttons. Moving menus in the stupid tablet in the middle of the console requires almost a PHD degree! The DS5 cockpit is basic if we compare with the Mercedes. The DS5 is extremely reliable, do not like the Workshops like their German rivals. DS5 is for people with pedigree!

    I like it. I'm a bit over the Audi/BMW/Merc thing - seems like everyone's got one. They're as common as Camrys - just not as dependable. I probably could live with DS5. The RUC and extra ACC levy is galling though . I don't use cupholders. I WALK into the cafe. Because I'm civilised....hehehe .

    • @CarNutvideos

    The idea of rebranding existing Citroen cars as DS was a bad one-those who had bought Citroen branded DS3, 4 and 5 cars were not pleased to find that their cars had suddenly disappeared from the market, and the target customers for an up-market brand were not impressed by being asked to by what they knew was a Citroen from a different showroom. The DS branded DS4 and DS5 cars flopped badly and have been quietly withdrawn from the market. A pity, as the DS5 was an attractive car and if the second series with improved suspension had kept the Citroen name and shark nose styling of the original it would have done better. Let’s see how they get on with the new DS7 and DS3 crossback, though they will have an uphill struggle against established premium brands

    Old Ds was a fantastic car but this new one would never make it in the USA. USA cars are too good and the quality usa consumers expect is higher than the Euros can deliver. The Japanese , Korean, and US automakers have left all Euro makers in the dust. We don’t want any more over engineered unreliable European bmw Mercedes junk. Audi is a glorified vw. Vw offers only Boring cars I like the old days. To buy a modern Mb or bmw is like taking money and burning it. Better off with Toyota or Hyundai or Ford or Chevrolet. This Citroen would be sent packing just like Fiat is about to

      My DS5 with six year warranty has given faultless reliability and joyful driving. My Hyundai Santa Fe has seats that are painful, and has had $16000 worth of repairs in 5 years! Asian reliability? Take one of their auto on/off 4WDs in for the frequent transfer case failures and the dealer will tell you you must have driven with an underinflated tyre (the manual says if you have to replace one it's advisable to replace all 4! I kid you not) So much for build quality. Buy Asian... never again
