- Why does universal motor use in hand drill and food mixer & What are the functions of starters in induction motor . Explanation based on practical applications.

Series motor is suitable when high starting torque is needed.However, in small tools and mixers the main reason for not using an induction motor is different.A largely unacknowledged principle in electric motors is that similar size motors will have similar rated torque. This is because irrespective of type of motor(induction or DC) rated torque ultimately depends on rotor volume times average flux density X average electric loading.
Smaller motors give smaller torque compared to a large motor,whether DC or induction type.To obtain the required high power output in small motors ,we have to increase the speed of motor. Because Power = torque X Angular Speed. Here is the catch. Induction motors at power frequency can run at 3000 rpm maximum. Because rpm is fixed by frequency and number of poles. Maximum rpm of 3000 at 50Hz can be obtained if we reduce the number of poles of induction motor to two. Beyond this ,it is not possible to reduce the number of poles and increase speed,unless we change frequency using VFD.
However DC motor doesn't have this limitation as the speed can be adjusted using other parameters and is independent of frequency .Mixer grinder motors run at 20,000 rpm which is not possible for induction motor at 50Hz.
A reduced starting torque is advantageous in reducing the deformation of shaft due to shear force strain and also reduces the weakening of machine foundations.
